Richard Thompson, our preacher on July 18th,

urged us not to be so concerned with busyness that
we neglected the things which really matter, like in
the Martha and Mary story (Luke Ch 10 if you want
to check it out) .
However he has had time enough to make a

In addition, using monies from the Sunday after-church coffee
the church has donated-
• £150 to the 6th Holme Valley Scout Group (Honley)
• £100 to the Welcome Centre, Huddersfield Methodist Mission
We are very conscious that there is no defined group
responsible for Home Missions. The Overseas Missions Group
doesn’t feel it can take on this role but feels it right to use the
coffee money for these projects. If any one feels they can take
on Home Missions they would have our support- and an initial
source of money!

To visit all the churches on a round trip from Honley by the most economical route would be a drive of 85 km (53 miles),
and could be done in just under two hours- if you didn’t stop at any of them!

Methodist Youth Brass Band will be performing in Holmfirth

Saturday 21st- Outside the church 3-4pm wit h tea and cakes available. At
7.30 a concert IN the churc h admission £5 (+concessions)
Sunday 22nd- Open air service at 10.30 followed by a Bring Your Own food
(for cooking on a barbeque). If it rains- probably inside and no BBQ
Whispers A young curate lost his voice at the local football match one Sat-
urday and, being due to preach the next morning, he t hought he shoul d call in
and consult his vicar. So he rang the vicarage bell and the door was answered by
a very attractive teenage daughter. “Is your dad here?” the curate managed to
whisper. “No,” she whisper ed back, “Come on in!”
Holiday Holyday
I went to the service in the protestant church in
Rudesheim, Germany. The service started as at Trinity
with the notices, but then
was more like a Cof E
service, with singing of
responses which the con-
gregation knew but visi-
tors didn’t and with unex-
plained dodging about in
the hymn book. We sat
down to sing the hymns,
but stood up for Kyrie
Elyse and the Lord’s Prayer, the only bit I
could really recognise; all rather dis appointing
and un-explained. However, a magnificent
modern stained-glass window at the east
end showed every possible reference to
wine to be found in the bible- possibly a
sales pitch as we were after all in the fa-
mous Rhinegau wine-growing area. (see it
in colour on the website!). I asked the min-
ister(ess) why no service sheets and she
replied that there were too many different
nationalities to make it possible! JM

with St Mary's and they would be
very glad of some help next year.
