Energy costs are escalating...
Percentage of sites using Diesel Generators in relation to power grid
availability
(source India)
1. Typical sites in emerging market
countries like India and Africa use Others; 20%
Diesel Generators as primary power or No DG OFF Grid; 10%
backup solution DG run over 18 h per day

Poor Grid; 20%

2. Diesel: DG run min. 10 h/day
Main Driver for increase of energy
costs and CO2 emissions

.…Emerging market energy costs to climb over 70%

driven primarily by network expansion but
compounded by increased energy cost of between 5% Unreliable & Good
and 10% per annum Grid; 50%
DG run 2-6 h/day

How to keep the energy situation under control…
Vodafone Technology Networks drive Innovation in Network Efficiency
and Green Technologies

> Developing 100% green powered innovative radio base station

solutions.

> You cannot manage what you do not measure: Vodafone is main
promoter of implementing standards energy monitoring features.

> Vodafone is implementing on large scale standardised efficient

products and developing intelligent power efficiency features.

> Better control of Diesel Operation by implementing alternatives

using Batteries as main power sources.

> Drive Technology innovation for renewable energy solutions using

(Solar+Wind) for mass usage in emerging markets.

…Design to real need

Green Telecom sites at reasonable cost

 Established joint Cooperation between Vodafone, China Mobile and Site in Focus
Indus Towers to push the industry to deliver renewable energy OFF Grid or sites with poor Grid power
technical solution for mass usage to reduce substantially diesel
consumption with Payback <= 3Years (currently 6-7Y).

 Work closely with Key Suppliers on low Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
approaches to deliver complete green site solutions.

only 2 main KPI‘s:

Power sustainability for Base Station and Payback < 3 Y

solution
The higher the load the higher the CAPEX investments in batteries and
Solution 1 Solution 2 Solution 3 solar to get same operational level
For small loads around 200W no Diesel Genset is necessary, which
corresponds to 100% reduction in the chart

It is technically and commercially feasible to power OFF-Grid Base stations with renewable energy
sources, the smaller the load the shorter the payback
