Course Description:
This is a course for those interested in the challenge posed by massive and
persistent world poverty, and are hopeful that economists might have
something useful to say about this challenge. The questions we will take up
include: Is extreme poverty a thing of the past? What is life like when living under
a dollar per day? Are the poor always hungry? How do we make schools work
for poor citizens? How do we deal with the disease burden? Is microfinance
invaluable or overrated? Without property rights, is life destined to be “nasty,
brutish and short”? Should we leave economic development to the market?
Should we leave economic development to non-governmental organizations
(NGOs)? Does foreign aid help or hinder? Where is the best place to intervene?
And many others. At the end of this course, you should have a good sense of
the key questions asked by scholars interested in poverty today, and hopefully a
few answers as well, viewed through an economic lens.
Prerequisites:
There are no prerequisites. But economics is a mathematical science so math
will appear, in small doses, in two forms. First, this course is empirically-oriented,
so almost all of the required readings and lectures will, at times, use elementary
statistics to describe the world. A handful of the required readings will use more
advanced statistical tools (such as correlations and regressions) to dig deeper
into the data. Second, the lectures will occasionally discuss simple
mathematical models that economists find helpful to describe some aspects of
the data. The intuition behind these models will, however, always be made
clear, and can be used as a substitute (for the purposes of your understanding,
and when answering assignment questions) for mathematics.
Course Tracks:
This course has two tracks:
• You can enroll in this course on the MicroMasters track. If you pay the
MicroMasters course fee, pass this online class, and pass an additional in
person proctored exam, you will have fulfilled this component of the
MicroMasters credential, and you will receive a certificate.
• You can also enroll in this course on the audit track, for free. You will not
receive a certificate or credit. However, you can upgrade to the
MicroMasters track by paying the course fee throughout the semester.
Please note that there is no longer a $50 “verified" certificate track, nor is there
any free "honor code" certificate track.
Students who are taking this class in pursuit of the MicroMasters credential will
also have to sit and pass an in-person, proctored exam. To be eligible to register
for the proctored exam, you first have to pass the online component of this class
on edX.
To pass the class on the MicroMasters track, students have to pass both the
online course and the proctored exam, i.e. you must achieve a passing grade in
the proctored exam regardless of how well you did on the edX course. Should
you successfully complete both of these requirements, your final MicroMasters
course grade will be calculated as follows:
• edX course: 40%
• Proctored exam: 60%
Academic Honesty:
We take academic honesty very seriously. You must complete all graded
materials by yourself and not engage in any activity that would dishonestly
improve your results, or improve or hurt the results of others. You may use only
one user account and not let anyone else use your username and/or password.
Having two user accounts registered in this course constitutes cheating. We will
be monitoring this diligently. Should we become aware of any suspicious
activity, we reserve the right to remove course credit, not award a MicroMasters
certificate, revoke a MicroMasters certificate, ban you from future MITx
Economics classes, and exclude you from consideration for admission to the MIT
blended Master’s program in Data, Economics, and Development Policy
without warning.
We will also rely on articles that you can access online, either through the edX
course website or elsewhere. Required readings are starred and need to be
read before the lecture under which they are listed. Additional readings are not
required, but will aid your understanding of the lecture material.
