1 H, HT roller coupling

1.1 General H-type roller couplings are available in 3 sizes. The size depends on the shaft
diameter. The coupling consists of two identical halves with three claws each,
which are engaged via a polyamide roller spider. The coupling halves are made
of die-cast aluminium and have a steel hub. The roller spider consists of 6 rollers
interconnected by means of links.
NOTE. If couplings are used with microspeed drives, you must also refer to Micro-

i speed drive assembly instructions 206 218 44.

2 HS slipping clutch

2.1 General The drive torque of Demag geared motors that have a coupling connection is
generally transferred from the motor to the gearbox via a roller coupling. In addition
to these roller couplings, a slipping clutch is available in 2 sizes, which can be
used as an anti-blocking device, if required. It can be largely used to replace the
Demag roller coupling and, therefore, it can also be fitted in the standard space at
a later date. The external dimensions of Demag geared motors remain unchanged
and the dimension sheets still apply.

Special features:
• Non-positive transmission of the torque
• Compensation of rotor displacement (e.g. when KB conical rotor motors are
used)
• Adjustable slipping torque
• Version without blocking monitoring

Note:
The surfaces of the slipping clutches are not protected. For this reason, slipping
clutches should only be used in enclosed gearbox housings or flanged housings.

2.2 Operating principle

The HS slipping clutch for Demag geared motors is a double-surface slipping
clutch suitable for
• installation in the existing coupling housing and for
• mechanically coupling with
– Demag Z cylindrical rotor motors
– Demag KB conical rotor motors and for compensating the axial rotor dis-
placement.
It consists of
• the coupling half on the gearbox side with an engaging pin (1)
• the coupling half on the motor side (2).
The clutch is frictionally locked via
• the two clutch lining disks (3),
• the two clutch linings (7)
which are pressed against driving disk (5) by two dished washers (4).

Slipping torque MR can be set to between 10% and 100% by means of slotted nut
(6).
If the required torque exceeds the adjusted value, the clutch slips and the two
coupling halves move at different speeds.
This clutch is used for drives of machines and parts of installations which are
easily visible from the outside and are operated by people.

2.4 Adjustment When ordering a geared motor fitted with a slipping clutch or a single slipping
clutch, the required setting for slipping moment MR must be specified. The follow-
ing guide values are recommended:

• For three-phase squirrel-cage rotor motors:

Starting torque MA
• For three-phase slip-ring rotor motors:
2,5 times rated torque
• For DC motors:
Torque corresponding to the set current limit.
Exact values can be determined as follows:

  J zus   J zus 
Starting: M R  1,15   M L  1   M  
  J  J  A  J zus  J Mot 
 zus Mot   
  J zus   J zus 
Braking: M R  1,15   M L  1   M  
  J zus  J Mot 
B  J zus  J Mot 
  

MR = slipping torque to be adjusted

ML = load torque reduced to the motor shaft
MA = starting torque
MB = brake torque
Jzus = additional moment of inertia reduced to the motor shaft
JMot = motor moment of inertia

The load torque must be used as a positive factor, if

• it acts against the run-up torque when the motor starts up (e.g. when a load is
lifted).
• it acts against the brake torque when the brake is applied (e.g. when a load is
lowered).
The setting must equal the maximum value of all types of load. For the limits refer
to 2.3.

2.5 Ordering individual The following steps are required if separately ordered coupling halves are used.
clutch halves

2.5.1 Wearing-in Note:

Ensure that the friction surfaces do no come into contact with any lubricants before
wearing them in. Double layers of dished washers must be used for the wearing-in
process.

The following values must be used for the wearing-in process:

HS 1 HS 2
Speed [rpm] 50 - 60 50 - 60
Slipping time [min.] 3,5 2
Slipping torque [Nm] 28 50
Wearing-in temperature on the clutch disk [°C] 80 - 85 80 - 85
Contact area of clutch lining disks [%] 60 - 70 60 - 70

If a contact area of 60 – 70% is not achieved, the wearing-in process must be

20326544_290517

repeated after the parts have cooled down.

9
2.5.2 Adjusting the slipping torque The dished washers must be arranged in layers as required for the range of
adjustment.

Note:
One dished washer must be removed (from the double layer used for the wearing-
in process) for a single layer arrangement.

The slipping torque can be infintely adjusted to the values given in the table for the
relevant dished washer arrangement by turning the slotted nut with a hook wrench.
The slipping torque must be checked in both directions by means of a torque
wrench. The wrench must not be moved abruptly when the slipping torque is
checked with the torque wrench. The torque wrench should be turned 90° to 180°;
the check should be carried out at least three times. (Slipping torque tolerance
+/- 5%)
The slotted nut must be secured against turning by the threaded pin and the plastic
thrust pad. The threaded pin must be fitted with Loctite 290/ 00727584 (3-4 Nm).

2.6 Limits of application The slipping clutch must not be used

• to travel against a fixed limit stop in normal operation (e.g. for positioning).
• in connection with a pole-changing motor in multi-speed operation.
In this case, the slipping clutch may only be used if the regenerative breakdown
torque which occurs when switching from the high-speed to the low-speed wind-
ing is limited to the level of the starting torque by the use of additional meas-
ures.
