CONTEXT & Graphic designers love to use typography to explore the interaction between the look of type and
what type actually says. Sometimes, however, designers explore the visual aspect of
INSPIRATION type to a much greater extent than the verbal. In these cases, the visual language does all the
talking. Cal Swan, author of Language and Typography, makes this point well when he says,
“These two distinct areas often come together in practice as there is clearly a very strong re-
lationship between the conception of the words as a message and their transmission in visible
form.” -Carolyn Knight and Jessica Glaser

Words have meaning. Type has spirit. The combination is spectacular. -Paula Scher

Stage 01
Research the definitions of 6 or more words that interest you from the list above. Choose 6 words
to create one composition, using only type, for each word. Each composition should in turn com-
municate and express the meaning of each word effectively without compromising legibility.
Research expressive typography and any references provided in class. Sketch several ideas and
solutions for each of the words chosen, in a square format.

Stage 02
Consider typeface, type variation, kerning and tracking. Make use of scale/proximity, overalap-
ping/rotation, positive/negative space. Manipulate letterforms purposely and creatively to achieve
your concept. Experiment with both hand made techniques and digital means to create your com-
positions. Repeat the word as many times as you feel necessary. All final solutions should be
20 x 20 cm black and white prints.

Stage 03
Choose 3 of your compositions to translate into colour versions. Make sure that the colours
selected reflect and compliment the meaning and concept of your composition. Strive to achieve
visual impact while paying attention to figure ground relationships. Experiment with both hand
made techniques and digital means to produce and apply colour.

CONSIDERATIONS Use one of the typefaces below per solution.
