PREFACE
The I150 Electronic Indicator is a highly versatile device which is designed for a variety
of applications. It can be used with virtually any load receiver which provides a
compatible output signal. This instruction manual contains the information needed to
install, configure and operate the I150. Read it before attempting to operate the
indicator.

The I150 is a software controlled indicator with a host of user-programmable features.

Calibrating and setting up operating parameters are easily accomplished using the
front panel keypad and display. These are a few of the standard features included with
the indicator:

RS-232 Interface: The bi-directional RS-232 interface enables the indicator to

communicate with printers and computers. Instructions on connecting and using the
interface are included in this manual.

Parts Counting: The parts counting feature allows you to count parts in a number of
ways. You can enter the average piece weight and start counting, or let the indicator
perform averaging and display the count.

Single/Dual Platform Operation: The I150 is a two-channel indicator which permits

you to monitor two load receivers. Switch to either load receiver by pressing a single
button.

Checkweighing and Filling: Set point indicators and digital outputs are provided for
these applications. In checkweighing, the indicators and digital outputs correspond to
OVER, UNDER and ACCEPT values. In filling processes, they can be used to activate
preset feedrates and cutoff points of filling devices.

Averaging Level
Averaging level compensates for vibra-
tion or excessive air currents on the load
receiver. During operation the I150 con-
tinually takes weight readings from the
load cell. Successive readings are then
averaged to achieve a stabilized display.
This parameter specifies whether the I150
will average more or fewer successive
readings. Select one of four averaging
levels.

To select an averaging level:

Enter the desired level (0, 1, 2, or 3)

using the numeric keypad, then press

Minimum Maximum
ENTER
ENTER to return to the scale sub- Averaging Averaging
menu.

25
Stability Range
The stability range specifies how much a
displayed weight may change (in gradu-
ations), while the stability indicator re-
mains ON. When the displayed weight
changes beyond the allowable range, the
stability indicator turns OFF. A value of
0.5, 1, or 3 graduations may be selected.

How Stability Range Affects Opera-

tion:
• Higher values increase the response
time of the indicator but permit the
displayed weight to fluctuate within a
greater range.

• Lower values decrease response time

but limit the allowable range of fluctua-
tion in displayed weight.

In either case, the stability indicator is

ON and the displayed weight is con-
sidered stable as long as it is within the
selected range.

• When the RS232 interface is config-

ured to print stable data only, the
stability range also governs the data
output. Displayed data will only be
output if it is within the selected range.

To select a stability level:

Enter the desired level using the nu-

meric keypad, then press ENTER

ENTER to

return to the scale submenu.

LFT NOTE: Initially set to .5 when LFT is

set to ON.

26
Unit Selection

tions and return to the scale sub-

menu.

LFT NOTE: Only lb or kg are available for

Legal for trade installations.

27
Auto-Zero Tracking
Auto-Zero tracking minimizes the effects
of temperature changes and shift on the
zero reading. Using this parameter, you
select a threshold level (in graduations),
which the I150 will consider to be a valid
change in load. Selections are .5, 1, and
3 graduations. OFF disables the feature.

To select a value or disable the feature:

Press UPUP or DOWN to display the

desired selection, then press ENTER

to return to the scale submenu.

LFT NOTE: Initially set to .5 when LFT is

set to ON. May be changed to 1 or 3 for
special applications: Normally set to .5 for
bench and counter scales; 3 for vehicle
scales; 1 for other scales.

Custom Unit Conversion

Factor
If you need to display weight measure-
ments in a unit other than LB, KG or OZ,
this feature enables you to create your
own unit of measure. You enter a conver-
sion factor which the indicator will use to
convert the calibration unit to the desired
unit of measure. There are two examples
at the end of this section which illustrate
how to determine conversion factors.

Once your conversion factor is deter-

mined, use the following procedure to
enter it.

LFT NOTE: Not available when LFT is set

to ON.

28
Entering a Conversion Factor
Conversion factors are entered in scien-
tific notation, a method of expressing a 0.0123 = .123 x 0.1 = .123 x 10-1
number as a value from 0.1 to 1 (called 1.23 = .123 x 10 = .123 x 101
the mantissa), multiplied by a power of 10 12.3 = .123 x 100 = .123 x 102
(the exponent). 123 = .123 x 1000 = .123 x 103

1. When you access the Custom Unit

parameter, the display will show “EPt”
for exponent.
ENTER
2. Press ENTER to display the current
exponent.

3. Use the numeric keypad to enter the

desired exponent. It must be an inte-
ger value (no decimals) from -15 to
+15.

To enter a negative exponent, enter

the number first, then press FUNCTION

FNCT,
-/+
then CLER.
CLR The minus sign will light

to indicate the number is negative.

4. Press ENTER.

9. Press DOWN to scroll to “End”.

10. Press ENTER

ENTER ,

to exit the Custom Unit parameter

and return to the scale submenu.

29
Conversion Factor Examples
Custom unit conversion factors are de-
fined in terms of the current calibration
unit:

1 Custom Unit = Conv. Factor x Cal. Unit

Example 1: TONS

Assume you wish to display weight in

Tons and the I150 is calibrated in pounds.

One ton = 2000 lbs, therefore the conver-

sion factor is 2000.
1 Ton = 2000 lbs

To enter the conversion factor, it must

first be converted to scientific notation: 2000 = 0.2 x 104
“.2” is the mantissa (between 0.1 and 1), Mantissa
and “4” is the exponent (power of 10)
Exponent
Using this conversion factor, the I150 will
display 1 custom unit for every 2000 lbs
on the load receiver.

Example 2: OUNCES

Assume you wish to display weight in

ounces and the I150 is calibrated in
pounds.

One oz = 0.0625 lb, therefore the conver-

sion factor is 0.0625. 1 oz = 0.0625 lb

To enter the conversion factor, it must

first be converted to scientific notation:

“.625” is the mantissa (between 0.1 and

1), and “-1” is the exponent (power of 10) 0.0625 = 0.625 x 10-1
Mantissa
Using this conversion factor, the I150 will
display 1 custom unit for every ounce on
the load receiver. Exponent

30
Average Display Cycle
Average display cycle is used for animal
weighing where the movement of animal
subjects on the load receiver causes in-
stability and inaccurate weight measure-
ments. Using this feature, you can enter
a number of sample readings (from 1 to
255) which the indicator will average be-
fore displaying a weight measurement.
Entering 1 for this parameter disables the
feature.

Enter the number of readings to be

averaged using the numeric keypad,

then press ENTER

ENTER to return to scale
submenu.

Refer to “Animal Weighing” in the OP-

ERATION section for the animal weighing
procedure.

LFT NOTE: Does not appear on menu

when LFT is set to ON.

Parts Count Error Level

The parts counting function of the I150
assumes that all parts are of a reasonably
uniform weight. Since there is usually
some difference, an allowable percent-
age of error can be entered. The error is
a percentage of the sample part(s) weight.
Acceptable entries can be from:
50
__________ % to 100%
resolution

To enter a parts counting error level:

Enter the desired error using the

numeric keypad,

then press ENTER

Parts Counting
Parts counting enables you to place a
batch of similar parts on the platform
while the indicator displays the total num-
ber of parts. To use this function, the parts
must be reasonably uniform in weight.
The accuracy of your results will be deter-
mined by the error level that was entered
in “PC Err” of the scale submenu.

LFT NOTE: This feature is not available

when LFT is set to ON.

A press-on label (“PCS”) for parts count-

ing is included in the accessory kit. It
should be affixed to the blank button next
to the FUNCTION button on the keypad.

The following procedure assumes that a

container of some sort will be used to hold
the parts. If this is not the case, simply

Parts Counting With An Auxiliary Sample Scale
An Ohaus TP, TS, GT or CT Series precision balance may be used as the sample
scale for parts counting. Any of these balances will provide the I150 with accurate
sample weights for calculating average piece weight.

Required Items:
• Ohaus PRECISION Plus, GT or CT balance with RS-232 interface
• Blunt end cable for connection to I150 (and computer/printer if used)

Optional Items:
• Printer or Computer
• Blunt end cable for connection to sample scale (and I150 if desired)

Cables are available as accessories (see page 74).

RS-232 Connections
The following wiring diagram shows possible RS-232 connections for a sample scale,
I150 and optional printer or computer. The only required connections are between the
I150 and sample scale. Since the I150 transmitter and sample scale receiver are not
required, they may be used with a printer, computer or other peripheral device as
shown in the diagram.

If a printer or computer is used, parts count data may be output by the I150 using the
autoprint feature or by pressing the PRINT button. Data will be output in the format
described under “Output Formats” in the RS-232 section of this manual.

55
Setup
RS-232 parameters for the I150, sample scale and printer/computer (if used) must be
configured the same; baud rate, parity, data bits and stop bits must match. Refer to
the RS-232 submenu section of this manual and the Print menu section of the manual
supplied with the sample scale for instructions on configuring RS-232 parameters.

Operation
1. Verify that all connections have been
made and the sample scale is ON.

2. Set the sample scale to the desired

weighing unit.

3. Place the correct sample number of

pieces on the sample scale. This
must be same number entered in the
“APW” parameter of RS-232
submenu.

4. Press the PRINT button on the sample

scale (for CT balances, press and
hold the UNITS button). If a com-
puter is connected to the sample
scale you may send a “P” command
to initiate output.

When the I150 receives weight data

from the sample scale, it will auto-
matically change to the parts count-
ing mode if it is not already in that
mode.

5. Place the parts to be counted on the

load receiver and read the quantity
on the I150 display.

Filling and Emptying Processes
The I150 enables you to control external feeding devices for filling or emptying weigh
hoppers, tanks, etc., to a desired target weight. By entering four system parameters,
the I150’s built-in digital outputs can be used to run feeders or emptying devices at
full speed, switch to a slower speed, and stop when the target weight is reached. The
four required parameters are:

Target Weight: Desired weight of completed batch.

Tolerance Range: Allowable range of error for target weight.
Dribble Weight: Weight remaining to reach the target weight, desired to switch
feeder or emptying device from fast to slow speed.
When LOAD > TARGET - DRIBBLE; dribble digital output
signals feeder or emptying device to switch to slow speed.
Preact Weight: Weight of material in suspension which falls freely from feeder
or emptying device to hopper or tank AFTER it is stopped.
The value you enter for PREACT is used to signal the feeder
or emptying device to stop before target weight is reached.
When LOAD > TARGET - PREACT; preact digital output
signals feeder or emptying device to stop.

Dribble and Preact values are entered in

the SET parameter of the scale submenu.
Target and Tolerance set points are en-
tered in the normal operating mode using
the keypad.

Use the following procedure to enter TAR-

rameter. This will cause the feeder to
change to slow feed when the load
reaches 90% of the target weight,
and stop the feeder when the target
weight is reached.

2. When the feeder is stopped, material

suspended in air (or the pipeline) will
fall freely into the hopper and cause
an over-fill. The weight of over-shoot
should then be entered for the
PREACT value.

3. Access the SET parameter in the

scale submenu and change the
PREACT value.

Repeat the procedure as needed to ad-

just DRIBBLE for optimum fill time, and
PREACT for optimum accuracy.
59
Emptying Processes:
1. Enter a value equal to 10% of the
target weight for DRIBBLE, and 0
(zero) for PREACT in the SET pa-
rameter. This will cause the empty-
ing device to change to slow feed
when 90% of the target weight has
been emptied, and stop when the
target weight is reached.

2. When the emptying device is stopped,

material suspended in air (or the
pipeline) will fall freely into the receiv-
ing container and cause an “over-
shoot”. The weight of over-shoot
should then be entered for the
PREACT value.

3. Access the SET parameter in the

scale submenu and change the

persists after zero adjustment, unit must be serviced.
Err 4: Calibration error. Requested resolution exceeds internal A/D resolution.
Repeat calibration or linearization procedure. Make sure correct calibra-
tion weights are used.
Err 5: Value is too large to display; exceeds 999999 counts. Caused by an invalid
Custom Unit Conversion Factor.
Err 7: All weighing units have been disabled (set to OFF) in the “SELECT”
parameter of the scale submenu. At least one weighing unit must be on.
Err 8: Maximum allowable graduation exceeded. Max available graduation is
500000; min available graduation is 0.00001.
Err 10: Non-volatile memory write error. Indicates hardware error. Retry last
operation performed. If error persists, unit must be serviced.
Err 11: Unable to obtain stable data. Occurs when stable data is required (i.e.
during calibration, or taring in legal for trade installations). Check that
platform is not subject to drafts, vibration, etc..
Err 12: No numeric entry is expected. Menu parameter requires you to make a
selection; will not allow a numeric entry.
Err 13: An attempt was made to enter too many digits.
Err 14: The maximum load that may be zeroed by pressing the ON/ZERO button
has been exceeded. See “ZERO” parameter in setup submenu.
Err 15: Tare data not valid; capacity exceeded. Tare values may be entered only
up to the capacity of the platform. Negative numbers not accepted.
Err 16: Average piece weight value entered is too small to accurately count parts.
Err 17: ID number store/recall error. An attempt was made to store or retrieve an
invalid ID code (i.e. too many digits, decimal point included, etc.)
Err 18: In-Out data not valid.
Err 19: Sense channel not operational. If sense is not used, “SENSE” parameter
of setup submenu must be set to OFF.
Err 20: Calibration is required after certain menu parameters have been changed.
Changes are not saved when this error occurs. Return to menus, set
parameters, and recalibrate before exiting menus.
Err 27: Internal overflow. Custom unit conversion factor too small or too large.
Err 29: Time/Date error.
