Abstract
This report highlights the successful completion of photography training under the PTS project by the
PEAD Foundation. This training was organized in College of Home Economics, University Campus
Peshawar during the period July to October 2017. This report aims to highlight beneficiary details,
program activities conducted, project achievements and challenges.

Background
This training was conducted under USAID Pathway to Success (PTS). During the training program,
adolescent girls from Peshawar were trained and supported in the development of skills required to
work as a professional photographer. All trainees were selected from the underserved and
disadvantaged backgrounds of district Peshawar.

All of the 30 inducted girls completed the training program. There were no dropouts from the course,
which indicates an exceptional level of interest in the training program. Only 3 girls failed to meet the
minimum attendance criteria of 75%. The team at PEAD finds that free transportation provided to these
girls not only contributed in exceptional attendance throughout the course but also helped in dispelling
security concerns of their family members. The participants identify a supportive attitude of their family
as an important factor in their development.

The complete training program was designed to cover a whole photography project cycle. Over the span
of 12 weeks the participants covered understanding of photography equipment, artificial and natural
lighting, setting up the shoot location, post processing of images, developing the concept of a story and
finally marketing your skills in today’s digital space.

The training program included educational and exposure visits for participants to experience living as a
professional photographer. Exposure visits were organized to 6 famous national and historic places with
immense photographic value. Visits to 3 operational studios in Peshawar were also organized.

Diversity and inclusion have been the programmatic themes of this training. 7 participants were from
non-Muslim minority groups.

Activity Details
The program followed a series of steps to reach its desired goal. It began with selecting and recruiting
potential female entrepreneurs from Karachi through interviews and tests followed by selection and
training of volunteers for the program activities. The program followed a rigorous schedule of
entrepreneurship trainings, application of tools, conduction of pre and post-test and tabulation of
results.

Activity 1: Selection of Trainer

The PEAD team selected Jawad Afridi to conduct the training. He is a graduate in engineering
management from National University of Sciences and Technology. He has five years of experience as a
professional photographer. He has previously worked as a photography trainer at Beacon House School
System and Bloomfield School system. Jawad’s input was crucial is designing the course content

Activity 2: Selection of Participants

Activity 3: Design and Development of Training Material

PEAD foundation designed the course content in line with the objectives of the project. The curriculum
was developed to covers all aspects of the local photography industry. The training comprised of 12
modules. Each module covered one complete set of skills covering a core photography topic.

The course outline is attached as Annex I.

Activity 4: Training classes

The training was spread over a period of 12 weeks. The classes were organized as scheduled.
Participants were enthusiastic about this learning opportunity and regular attendance throughout the
course indicates that there was no decline in their interest and energy.

Activity 5: Evaluation and Assessments

Trainer conducted internal examinations on a monthly basis. He also assigned group tasks during the
weekly modules to encourage the participants to apply their new skills. An end of the training exam was
also conducted. The cumulative marking technique was applied for the final scoring. 75 % attendance
was set eligibility for certification from College of Home Economics , University Campus, Peshawar.

Activity 6: Educational Visits

socializing with professionals created a perfect opportunity to develop linkages in an industry that
dominantly relies on reference based marketing.

Activity 7: Exposure Visits

Exposure visits to national and historic sites were conducted. These visits let participants copy work
from various renowned photographers. Studying someone else’s work and replicating their style in your
own allowed participants to analytically apply their training. The cohort visited following sites during
their training:

 Takht-i-Bahi Buddhist Remains Mardan

 Islamia College Peshawar
 Faisal Mosque Islamabad
 Daman-e-Koh Islamabad
 Shakar Parian Islamabad
 Jinnah Super F-7 Islamabad

Activity 8: Debriefing Session

The end of the training a debriefing session concluded the training program. Trainers and participants
shared their feedback about the program. The trainers input regarding the whole program was positive.
He said that the the trainees were very interested and showed high-level of interest. Despite challenges
due to insufficient educational qualifications, the majority of participants were able to grasp the basics
of the training. One third of them showed exceptional performance and were able to replicate
professional standards in practice. It is highly likely that they will be able to start their own businesses in

Challenges
Overall, the PEAD Foundation’s diligent efforts have allowed for the fruitful completion of the training
program. The training was well-rounded, with multi-talented speakers, field trips, and experiential
learning activities. Our efforts not only resulted in the completion of successful training program, but
also allowed them networking opportunities that may lead to successful partnerships. Development of a
transportation plan, literacy issues, and permission for these girls from parents or guardians were the
major challenges faced by PEAD. Each challenge was met with a comprehensive solution.

Key Takeaways
The first intervention of this program has enabled the team to learn current best practices in training
adolescent girls. It is important to always keep the guardians of these adolescent girls in the
communication loop as they can act as facilitators instead of being barriers to the economic growth of
the girls. Furthermore, it has been noted that sessions are far more interactive when the trainees are
able to relate to program objectives. Therefore, it is ideal to offer programs in their area of interest.

Way Forward
PEAD foundation has agreed with different local photography studios to induct five students from this
cohort. Building up on the training objectives these girls will have an hands on experience in the industry
which will benefit them in their professional development.

5 participants of this course were interested in further entrepreneurial training. They have been
enrolled in a two-month long training program on entrepreneurship and income generation techniques.
This will improve their chances of successfully developing business plans and implementing them for
sustainable livelihoods.
