Barbara R. Arnwine, executive director of the Lawyers’
Committee for Civil Rights under Law, echoed those
sentiments. “The Lawyers’ Committee joins the nation in
mourning the loss of Jefferson Thomas, who, along with
eight classmates courageously integrated Arkansas’s largest
public high school, Central High School, in 1957,” she said
in a statement. “We commend his outstanding sacrifice
and example in testing the federal government’s resolve to
enforce the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1954 ruling rendering racial
segregation in American public schools illegal.”
Previously a student at the all-Black Dunbar Junior High,
Thomas joined the other Black students in volunteering as
agents in the NAACP’s long-fought efforts to integrate schools
– a plan that segregationists, including Arkansas’ then-Gov.
Orval Faubus, fought tirelessly.
“We feel that they have done the almost impossible job
of facing the camera, enduring thousands of questions from
newsmen and holding on through some pretty terrifying days,”
said the Little Rock NAACP’s then-field director Clarence
Laws in an AFRO Oct. 5, 1957 article.

Thomas would often buoy the group’s spirits with laughter.

Opinion
America, a Mosque
and Me
When the planes flew into the World Trade Center in New
York on Sept. 11, 2001, I was living in Seattle, on the other
side of America. My brother and his wife were visiting me. We
did not leave the house for two days because we were worried
that Americans angry at Muslims would attack my sister-in-
law, who wore a hijab.
On Sept. 13, 2001, one such angry American – Patrick
Cunningham – tried to start a fire in my local mosque’s parking
Mona Eltahawy lot. When two Muslims coming out from night prayers tried to
stop him, Cunningham – who was drunk – tried to shoot them;
he missed, then jumped into his car and drove into a tree.
When we heard what had happened, we drove to the mosque and were moved to see flowers
and messages of support already flooding its entrance. And from that night on and for weeks
more, neighborhood men and women holding signs that read “Muslims are Americans” stood on
24-hour guard outside the mosque.
Compassion was not one-sided. Issa Qandil, a Jordanian immigrant to the United States,
who was one of the two Muslim men Cunningham had tried to shoot, told authorities he forgave
Cunningham and wanted to drop the charges.
The Seattle Weekly newspaper said that wasn’t possible, but that Qandil’s attitude of
forgiveness facilitated a plea bargain. Qandil visited Cunningham in jail and told him that
he understood why he did what he did and that he forgave him. Qandil even testified at
Cunningham’s sentencing hearing, saying that retribution was useless and asked the court to be

FDA Looks to Curb Abuse of Cough Medicine

By Matthew Perrone
Lee Bailey, EURWEB.COM AP Business Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal health regulators are weighing

restrictions on Robitussin, NyQuil and other cough suppressants to curb
cases of abuse that send thousands of people to the emergency room each
year.
The Food and Drug Administration has posted its review of
dextromethorphan, an ingredient found in more than 100 over-the-
counter medications that is sometimes abused for its euphoric effects.
The practice, dubbed “robotripping,” involves taking more than 25 times
the recommended dose of a cold medicine and is mainly associated with
teenagers.
At high doses the drug causes increased blood pressure, heart rate and
fever. Abusers can also suffer side effects from other ingredients mixed in
cough medicines, such as acetaminophen, which can cause liver damage.
“Because of the drug’s perceived safety, ease of availability, and desired
psychoactive effects, it is sought after by those seeking to alter their mental
state,” states the FDA review.
According to the FDA, inappropriate use of the cough-medicine
ingredient was linked to nearly 8,000 emergency room visits in 2008. That
