Homework #1
1. Briefly describe 3 emerging applications of biomaterials
Discuss how to implement these applications in the
Colombian healthcare marketplace. What are the main
barriers for entrance?
2. Make an estimate of how many different types of
biomaterials are in use today? Hint: Explore FDA regulation
on biomedical devices
3. Find the definition of Biomaterial by the FDA, explain it in
your own words and explain its implications for new
biomaterials
Biomaterial or Medical Device ?
• FDA neither approves materials nor maintains a list of
approved materials
• The properties and safety of materials must be carefully
assessed with respect to the specific application in question
and its degree of patient contact.
• The final assessment must be performed on the finished
product, under actual use conditions.
