Energy Web Quest Activity


Energy is utilised in nearly every aspect of our lives. There are a variety of energy sources available with each source having
advantages and disadvantages regarding its access, use and impact on society and the environment.

Decisions need to be made on what energy sources need to be considered in order to provide for global energy needs now and in
the future.

In this activity students will:


learn about energy sources using internet research
utilise digital technology to create a digital presentation to demonstrate learning e.g. website, PowerPoint, photostory,
E-book
demonstrate their learnings to other students.

Activity Sequence
1. Teacher brainstorms with class the range of energy sources available.
2. Students work in groups of four or five. Each group is assigned an energy source.
3. Student groups conduct internet research to find out information about their energy source, using at least three of the web
sites listed below.
4. Student groups create a presentation e.g. PowerPoint/photo story/e-book on their energy source.
Each presentation is to include:
Title.
8 to 10 slides or pages that provide the following information about the energy source:
Description of energy source, including whether renewable or non-renewable.
History of the energy source.
Where the energy source is found and how it is recovered.
How energy is stored in the source and how the energy is released.
How the energy source is used today.
Advantages and disadvantages of the energy source.
Economic impacts of the energy source.
Environmental impacts of the energy source.
Social impacts of the energy source.
Future of the energy source and any other interesting facts.
List of resources.

5. Students present to the class.


6. Students discuss or debate issues that have arisen from the presentations.
