Logarithmic functions
Logarithmic functions are inverses of exponential
functions
y = b x ⇔ x = logb y

logb (xy ) = logb x + logb y

logb x y = y logb x, x > 0
loga x ln x
logxb = =
loga b ln b

Composite function

(f ◦ g )(x) = f (g (x))
If : X → Y , g : Y → X , and
∀x ∈ X , g (f (x)) = x
∀y ∈ Y , f (g (y )) = y
then f is the inverse function of g , and g is the
inverse function of f .

Quiz
2
1. Solve 5x +2x = 125
2. The bacteria population in a bottle at time t
(in hours) has size P(t) = 1, 000e 0.35t . After how
many hours will there be 5,000 bacteria?
3. Use the table below to evaluate
(f ◦ g )(1), (g ◦ f )(1), (f ◦ f )(1)
(g ◦ g )(1), (g ◦ f )(3), (f ◦ g )(6)
x 1 2 3 4 5 6
f(x) 3 1 4 2 2 5
g(x) 6 3 2 1 2 3
Dr. Tran Thai-Duong (IU HCMC) Elementary Functions October 28, 2012 6 / 22
Example

Let f (x) = x + 2, g (x) = x − 1, then

(f ◦ (g ◦ g ))(x) = f (g (x − 1)) = f ((x − 1) − 1)
= f (x − 2) = (x − 2) + 2 = x

((g ◦ g ) ◦ f )(x) = g (g (x + 2)) = g ((x + 2) − 1)

= g (x + 1) = (x + 1) − 1 = x
Therefore f −1 = g ◦ g
