1. Juan Luna- painter and revolutionary activist. He is best known for his Spoliarium, his painting that gave
him the gold medal in the Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes in 1884.

THE PARISIAN LIFE

There are three interpretations of the lady but I believe the third one is more symbolic and not a
mere coincidence, I wrote more about the details over at Blog Watch. In a nutshell. the lady is the mirror
image of the Philippine archipelago. Xiao superimposed the Philippine Map image over the lady and I can
see the contour of Northern Luzon follows the same contour of the lady’s bodice. This interpretation
contends that the lady is our motherland and if you look at the lady she is “awkwardly poised, disturbed
with a blank stare, seemingly unsure whether to stand up or remain seated.” “Parisian Life” began as a
tribute to great Filipinos who are on the cusp of a great change, and now a fitting testament to Luna’s
genius and artistic merit, his work continues to invoke passion and create history.”

2. Fernando Amorsolo- famous for his rural landscape paintings and his mastery in the use of light.
TINIKLING
Renowned as the First Contemporary Filipino Artist, Amorsolo painted the Philippine landscape
in sunny and colorful depictions that idealized both nature and native beauty. Using techniques of natural
outdoor lighting and taking from the Impressionists of Europe, he mastered the skill of natural lighting in
his paintings, and this trademark was later called his mastery of the "Philippine Sun."

3. Vicente Manansala- painter famous for his style of Cubism. Like Amorsolo, Manansala is also a National
Artist for Visual Arts.

MOTHER AND CHILD

“The climax is just when it’s really finished.” stated by Vicente Manansala he believes that the b
eauty of art is in the process, in the moment of doing a particular painting, closely associating it with the
act of making love.
In the year 1997 he painted the reclining Mother and child. In composition, his works often feat
ure lines of perspective with receding space, although shallow; but recession in depth is simultaneously
defined by lines and planes which create spatial ambiguities. His still life’s have a tapes try like quality, th
e various objects from the domestic context, not fragmented but left integral, occupy he entire visual fie
ld, bright elements on a dark, ambiguous space, and at times showing.
Manansala’s painting consistently worked in the figurative mode, with the exception of a few ab
stract works. Shunning Amorsolo’s rural idylls, he developed a new imagery based on the postwar urban
experience. The city of Manila, through the vision of the artist, assumed a strong folk character. He pain
ted an innovative mother and child, which reflected the poverty in postwar Manila. He also set that app
eared at the end of the war is this picture of the urban poor. It is expressive of the feelings of anxiety an
d insecurity of the time. The shades of brown used emphasize the shabby appearance of the shanties wi
th their roofs put together from scraps, the dirt, and the discomfort.
The central image is of a keen and watchful mother whose child’s hand is against her face in a ge
sture that suggests protection against the harshness of life.
In real life situation mother is who is always there for her child to support when his/her child is i
n needs. She is the number one fan of his/her children she is the protagonist in the reason she is the sup
er “ina ng tahanan”. A mother who is willing to sacrifice even her life for the better future of her child. S
he is the first teacher, disciplinarian, best friend, shoulder to cry on and being the mother protector espe
cially the father is not around of every child.
In nine months a mother always take good care of her child for the sake og her baby inside her
womb. When a baby came out in a mothers womb. She is the most happy even though she suffer pain t
o only give birth for her child. Sometimes she became antagonist if her child involves into a bad situation
. For her/his child id the most beautiful woman and the best mother in whole world. Even though how di
fficult life is a mother never ever back down to all life problems and challenges in the world she faced.
Mother and child painting portrays the reality of being a mother even though how difficult life is she is t
he one always there not only to good care and give lovebut also the soldier that protect her child in ever
y time from the world that full of challenges. Even though they are in the downside face of the world an
d even though they only have a poor status in life a mother never ever stop to foster her child. Mother k

4. BenCab (Benedicto Cabrera)- the "artist-activist", BenCab was awarded the National Artist for Visual
Arts in 2006.

ODE TO THE FLAG

In the Ode to the Flag, BenCab returns to the same revolution and flag – draped, wrapped and displayed
with the likes of Andres Bonifacio, remembered for instigating the war of independence, as well as other
personalities. In many of the works, the flag is draped on anonymous human forms that are not seen,
suggesting the countless, nameless Filipinos who fought for freedom.
After more than a century since the revolution against colonial powers, and almost 70 years since
independence, BenCab’s Ode to the Flag reminds us that the fight is not yet over, and suggests that our
flag, as yet, does not fly in skies that are truly free.
Ode to the Flag is part of BenCab 50 Creative Years, the yearlong celebration of BenCab’s 50 th year as
artist, and signals likewise the national remembrance of Flag Day on 28 May, a prelude to the
117thIndependence Day of the Philippines on 12 June 2015. The exhibition will be on view until 2 August
2015.
