It’s Not About
The Suit?
Easter, for me as a child, was
more about the suit than it was
about the Savior. I did not grow
up in a religious family where
the significance of Easter was
discussed. Easter was about
hunting colored eggs and not
getting your suit dirty.
The day before Easter was
when things really started
to get interesting around our
house. Mama would fill various
containers with vinegar and
drop in a dye tablet to give it
time to dissolve before the eggs
were ready. She would then boil
dozens of eggs while we kids sat
at the table spilling the various
containers of brightly colored
vinegar. During all of this no
mention was ever made of why
we celebrated Easter.

My Easter memories became
tainted early on. In the first grade
we had an Easter egg hunt; the
first prize being a chocolate bunny.
I remember wanting that bunny
s more than anything in the world. I
wanted it so bad I lied about how
many eggs I had collected just to
didn’t have as many eggs as I had
claimed, I lied even more to cover
up the first lie. Looking back I
don’t know how I pulled it off but
I came home with the bunny, well
half of it anyway, and showed it to
my grandmother. I never forgot the
bunny or the lie. I no longer care
for chocolate bunnies… ahh the
wages of sin.
Looking back I can’t help but
wonder if I had known what
Easter was all about would I have
lied about the amount of eggs in
my basket? Although it’s purely
speculation I would like to think
I would have done the right thing.
Knowing my character then,
probably not.

Despite that one episode most
of my Easter memories revolve
around the phrase, “Don’t Get
Your Suit Dirty!” It seems unfair
to dress a kid up in a suit, send
him digging through the thorns
and thistles of a nearby pasture
looking for colored eggs and have
any expectations that grass stains
would not rule the day. As a result,
my Easter memories were more
stressful than entertaining.
Now that I have a personal
relationship with the main
character in the Easter story the
stress surrounding the occasion is
replaced by a mixture of sadness
and joy. Sadness because of the
realization those times
spent around the table
dying eggs could have
been enriched by the
story of Christ and his
love for me. Joyful
because Christ loves
me and has risen to save
me from myself.
The reality is not much
has changed. I still get
up put on my suit and
dig through the thorns
and thistles of life. However, the
stress is replaced by a calming
reassurance that one day I will
be sitting around a table in Glory
hearing the story of Easter from
my Savior’s own lips. I’ll try not
to spill the vinegar.

I have been at the Anchorage
Gospel Rescue Mission since
April 25th, 2007. When I first
entered the “NewLife” Program
I wasn’t sure that I needed to
stay for the whole year but
soon realized that 30 years of
bad and addictive habits wasn’t
going to go
away in
30 days.
Although
I had been
involved
with just
a b o u t
e v e r y
kind of
drug and
sin it was
alcohol, or
rather my abuse of alcohol that
brought me to the Mission.
I grew up going to church
every week, whether I wanted
to or not. I stopped going the
first week I didn’t have to go,
which was the week I moved
out of my parents’ house.
I knew of God and I knew of
Jesus but never took the time
to have a personal relationship
with God, and I figured that
was good enough.
I had a high school education,

I was a fairly intelligent person
and didn’t need any help running
my life. I didn’t need the King of
Kings, Prince of Peace, Bread of
Life, Lion of Judah, Son of God,

an Option
As the winter wanes, as least I hope
it is, believe me there is no “Global
Warming” here in Anchorage, our
thoughts turn to spring. It is a fact
of life that nothing remains the
same, except of course, with the
Lord. Change is a part of life which
is certainly reflected in the lives of
those who successfully complete the
“NewLife” recovery program here at
the mission. What a horrible thing
it would be if people, by the Lord’s
help, could not change.
One of the main ingredients that lead
to success is one’s determination to
change and be willing to step out of
the comfort zone that is so appealing.
This is true for all of us, not just those
in recovery. We try to teach the men
that there are some things in life that
for the rest of their lives will always
remain “off limits.” After recovery,
one is always in a state of recovery
and has to see many things as “not
options” for them. When they are
tempted to drink or use drugs, it would
help, to say to themselves, “this is no
longer an option for me, I can’t even
consider it.” This idea alone can bring
success, for them, and for the rest of
us. For example, the next time you
are tempted to become angry over an
insignificant issue, just say to yourself,
“To become angry over something
like this is not an option for me.” Just
like when your boss asks you to carry
out a duty, you know that it is not to exhaust this resource. The thirst for the

raise God the Savior lives. He was Victorious
P over death, hell and the grave just as He said
He would be. And because He lives we also
will live for ever with Him in the place that He has
prepared for us that Paul described in I Corinthians
2:9 when he said, “eye hath not seen, nor ear heard,
neither have entered into the heart of man, the
things that God hath prepared for them that love
Him.”
On that first Easter morning when God raised
Christ from the dead it sealed our salvation and
gave us hope for everlasting life—because He lives
we that have put our faith in Him and accepted
Him as our Savior will live also together with Him
forever.
Satan thought he had won the victory when he saw
Christ dead on the cross—how disappointed he
must have felt when he saw Christ Alive and well
and talking with Mary in the garden on that first
Easter morning.
Now we too are more than conquerors over
death, hell and the grave because He lives. Some
proofs that God raised Him from the dead are these;
the broken seal on the stone, the stone rolled away
from the opening of the tomb, the grave clothes
and the empty tomb. If you need more proof than
these, ask any Christian. He will tell you that He
Lives, He Lives not only in heaven seated at the
right hand of the Father but He also lives in their
heart.
If Christ was not alive and there was no
resurrection we would surely agree with Paul as he
wrote in I Corinthians 15:19, “If in this life only
we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most
miserable.”
Yes He lives and you can live forever with
Him too if you will only come to Him by faith with
a repentant heart, confess Him as your Savior and
believe that He will save you if you ask Him. It
is just that simple. God providing salvation for us
was not cheap, It cost the Son of God His life—but
it is free! Trust Him today even NOW!
