All site personnel will be issued with PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as hardhats, safety glasses,
reflective (high visibility) jackets, harnesses and safety boots. PPE must be worn whilst carrying out erection
activities.

The method of sub-assembly will be formally communicated to those employees directly involved in the lifting
operations by the Cleveland Bridge Construction Manager or his/her appointed deputy.

Recorded toolbox talks will be carried out at regular intervals during the course of the project.

All electrical equipment will be 110V and will have been subject to portable appliance testing within the last 3
months.

All lifting equipment will be thoroughly inspected by a competent person every six months and certification will
be recorded.

5.3 Control of Lifting Operations

The Construction Manager or his/her appointed deputy will ensure that all parties affected by Cleveland
Bridge activities are duly notified. Lifting operations covered in this method statement will include the use free
issue tower cranes.

The Construction Manager or his/her appointed deputy will maintain regular communication with key the main
contractor staff during erection periods as well as pre and post erection period.

The Construction Manager or his/her appointed deputy must assess the proposed operation to provide for
planning, selection of equipment, instruction and supervision to enable the work to be carried out safely.

The Construction Manager or his/her appointed deputy shall take responsibility for the organisation and
control of the operation on behalf of the Senior Project Manager. He/she will be adequately trained and have
the necessary experience to be deemed competent.

The Construction Manager or his/her appointed deputy will ensure that all tests, inspections and examinations
and maintenance have been carried out prior to the use of plant and machinery and that a record of such is
available for inspection prior to work commencing. They will also have the authority to carry out their duties
and to stop the operation if they believe that there is any danger.

5.4 Safety During Operation of Cranes

The Main Contractor must advise Cleveland Bridge of any services that could adversely affect the setting up
or movement of the crane on site.

Banksmen will be used when setting up and moving the Crane.

When lifting operations are being carried out, a safe working zone is to be established. The area will be under
control of the Appointed Person/Construction Manager. Unauthorised personnel are to be excluded from the
work area.

Where high wind speed is a concern, the Appointed Person in charge of the lift will liase closely with the crane
driver to ensure that the safety of each lifting operation is not compromised. Consideration shall be given to
the safe working limits of the crane, the ability to control the load and the proximity of any live services.

Maximum loading on Crane is to be adhered to and controlled by the Crane operator, to ensure that the SWL
is not exceeded under any circumstances.

Competent slingers will be used for all slinging operations. Banksmen will be used during all Crane
operations.
