Rationale for the inclusion The rationale to include this module in the academic programme is because
of the course / module in this module is to provide a secure academic foundation in the core and
the programme closely related disciplines of accountancy and to maximize the number of
exemptions from the examinations of the professional accountancy bodies
through accreditation.

Objectives The aims of the programme seek, inter alia, to provide:

1. a basis of academic learning and discipline suitable for a sound foundation


for a subsequent career as a professionally qualified accountant or for any
career in management and business administration; and

2. a qualification accredited for examination exemption purposes by the


Association of Chartered Certified Accountants [ACCA] and the Association
of International Accountants [AIA].

This module delivers against these [and the other aims stated in the
Programme Specification] because it underpins and provides a context for
the study of accountancy and is important in the context of the examinations
of the professional accountancy bodies.

Course Learning Upon the completion of this module, students should be able to:
Outcomes (CLO)  Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental economic
principles, theories and models and demonstrate an ability to analyse
a range of contemporary economic issues and problems through the
application of relevant economic theory.
 Demonstrate an understanding of the technical rules and concepts
relating to Corporate & Business Law and demonstrate an ability to
apply knowledge of relevant Business and Corporate Law concepts
to various scenarios.
 Express ideas and arguments in writing appropriate for a specific
academic and professional audience and research and reference
source materials consistently and accurately using the Harvard
referencing system.

Transferable Skills: Formative assessments are those interim assessment opportunities whereby
Skills and how they are students can gain an enhanced understanding of how well they are
developed and assessed, progressing with their learning; such opportunities may include some tests
Project and practical being offered for the purposes of generating some feedback. Any mark
experience and Internship generated through formative assessment is for feedback purposes only and
will not contribute to the overall module grade. Formative assessments also
allow tutors to focus on the needs of the student group. Students will be
expected to complete formative tests and complete sheets of questions prior
to consideration of these in seminars.
Teaching-learning and Lecturers will introduce and consider the principles which allow analysis of the
assessment strategy particular topics. Seminars/ workshops will develop and apply the analysis.
Students are expected to actively participate in class exercises and
discussion.
Synopsis The programme philosophy is to provide a secure academic foundation in
the core and closely related disciplines of accountancy and to maximise the
number of exemptions from the examinations of the professional
accountancy bodies, through accreditation.

This module is consistent with this philosophy since it examines the legal,
ethical, competitive and macroeconomic environments within which the
accounting function takes place. It aims to provide an understanding of the
complexity and implications of the external environments within which
organizations operate in order to allow analysis of the opportunities and
constraints that influence strategic choice decisions. This includes both the
competitive behaviour of businesses in the management of their markets and
decisions made by government agencies from both economic and
regulatory perspectives.
Mode of Delivery The module will be delivered using a combination of lectures and seminars,
including individual and group activities. Students will receive a study
programme that will include an outline of the topics covered, the assessment
of the module, and a list of reading and use of other learning materials that
should be undertaken. Students are expected actively to participate in class
exercises and discussion. The teaching and learning strategy seeks to
encourage independent learning.
