Dr. Wendy van Gent
For this particular lesson, I chose a 3rd grade standard that relates to the seasons as that is my
main goal for the students to understand the difference between the seasons by the end of my
lesson. However, the students that I will be teaching in this lesson have more severe
disabilities and have lower IQs. So, we will be going over things that the students will be able
to understand and take in while working with the seasons, such as: temperature, type of
condensation (rain or snow), what clothing to wear, and what holidays happen during those
seasons because those are real life things that all students should know. My future students
may need them explicitly taught to them whereas other students in the general education
classrooms may be able to infer from watching others.
Presentation Steps:
“There are 4 seasons in a year. (clap, clap) There are 4 seasons in a year. (clap, clap) Winter, Spring,
Summer, Fall, Now stop and say them all Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall (clap, clap) In Winter, we wear
a coat (clap, clap) In the Spring, the flowers start to grow (clap, clap) In the Summer it is hot, In the
Fall, the leaves will drop, Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall (clap, clap)”
I will start by singing the song “If you’re happy and you know it” because that will be
something the kids can connect to.
From there, we are going to be talking about the weather that is outside, and then we
will talk about what the weather will turn into.
After that, we will discuss what seasons are and how we know which one is which.
Then we will learn the “Seasons Song” to help us remember which season has which
key elements for us to determine what season it is.
Then I will have a worksheet for students to draw lines to connect what season, and
then a picture that shows what the song sings about.
Also, our words will be our vocabulary words for the week in language arts so that way the
students can connect all the themes together that we are learning.
