Unit 4: Flip, Slide and Turn Time allotted: 4 weeks

OVERVIEW:
This unit will develop an understanding of length preserving transformations (isometries) by
• Analyzing properties of reflections, translations and rotations using coordinate geometry;
• Constructing reflections, translations and rotations using a straight edge and compass; and
• Exploring relationships of reflections, translations and rotations utilizing appropriate technology
and manipulatives.
ENDURING UNDERSTANDINGS:
• Coordinate geometry can be a useful tool for understanding geometric shapes and
transformations.
• Reflections, translations and rotations are actions that produce congruent geometric objects.
• Many geometric constructions are based upon congruent triangles.
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:
• How can the coordinate plane help me understand properties of reflections, translations and
rotations?
• What is the relationship between reflections, translations and rotations?
• Why is the definition of a circle a foundation for geometric constructions?
• In what ways can I use congruent triangles to justify many geometric constructions?
