STANDARD PRACTICES MANUAL (PN 585005)

SURFACE TREATMENTS − APPLICATION OF

PROTECTIVE COATINGS (PWA 830) − SPOP−150

Task 70−41−03−380−008:

1. SPOP 150 − Application Of PWA 60 Graphite Varnish Antiscuffing

Treatment

R CAUTION: DO NOT USE SPOP 218 OR SPOP 219 GRIT BLASTING TO

R REMOVE OLD COMPOUND FROM FAN/COMPRESSOR BLADE ROOTS,
R AND HUB AND DISK BLADE SLOTS. THIS TYPE OF GRIT
BLASTING COULD CAUSE UNEVEN BASE METAL REMOVAL AND
RESULT IN UNEVEN DISK LOADING DURING ENGINE OPERATION.

R NOTE: If an Engine Manual repair specifies SPOP 150 (PWA

R 60) for blade, disk, and hub requirements, use SPOP
R 160 (PWA 474). Refer to 70−41−03, SPOP−160 (Task
70−41−03−380−016).

A. General

R (1) Remove old graphite varnish with one of the procedures

R that follow:

R (a) SPOP 19. Refer to 70−21−00, SPOP−19 (Task

R 70−21−00−120−009).

R (b) SPOP 260. Refer to 70−21−00, SPOP−260 (Task

R 70−21−00−110−042).

(2) Do the applicable fluorescent particle inspection or

fluorescent magnetic particle inspection, as specified
in the Engine Manual.

B. Prerequisites

(1) Clean the part and prepare the surface as directed for
each part. If no surface preparation is necessary,
none will be specified.

C. Material

R (1) Use prepared PWA 60.

NOTE: PWA 60 graphite varnish can be thinned with PMC

9016 isopropyl alcohol (reagent grade) or AMS
3170 alcohol ester thinner to get the necessary
consistency for application.

R (1) Remove oil or grease from the part with SPOP 209,
if necessary. Refer to 70−21−00, SPOP−209 (Task
70−21−00−110−041).

R (2) Solvent wipe the area to be painted by SPOP 208. Refer

R to 70−21−00, SPOP−208 (Task 70−21−00−110−040).

R (3) Air dry.

R (4) Spray one or more coats of graphite varnish material on

the specified area of the part to a film thickness of
approximately 0.0002 inch (0.0051 mm). If spraying is
impractical because of location or geometry of the area
to be treated, brush or dip the parts to coat to the
above thickness.

NOTE: Do not apply graphite varnish to working

surfaces (except gear and spline teeth) or to
external threads, internal screw threads below
the first two threads, oil holes, dowel holes,
or other surfaces where such treatment is not
specified.

R (5) Air dry 10 minutes minimum between coats and after

final coat.

R (6) Bake parts as follows:

(a) For steel gears, aluminum and magnesium materials,

bake at 275° − 325°F (135° − 163°C) for not less
than one hour.

NOTE: The start of the timed baking period is the

time at which the surface of the part is
approximately 275° − 325°F (135° − 163°C).

(b) For all other parts, bake at 375° − 425°F (191 −

218°C) for not less than one hour.

NOTE: The start of the timed baking period is the

time at which the surface of the part is
approximately 375° − 425°F (191° − 218°C).

R (7) Air cool.

R (8) Check parts for full coverage. Coating must be:

(a) Continuous
