School ditches online
learning program after parents revolt
CHESHIRE, Conn. — The fast-growing online platform
was built with help from Facebook engineers and designed
to help students learn at their own speed. But it’s been
dropped because parents in this Connecticut suburb revolt-
ed, saying there was no need to change what’s worked in a
town with a prized reputation for good schools.
The Summit Learning program, developed by a
California charter school network, has signed up over 300
schools to use its blend of technology with go-at-your-
own-pace personalized learning.
Cheshire school administrators and some parents praised
the program, but it faced criticism from others who said
their children were spending too much time online, some
content was inappropriate, and students were not getting
enough direct guidance. Superintendent Jeffrey Solan said
this week he accepted the change was too much, too soon
for some.
“Some people were more comfortable with a model where
a teacher stands in front of a class and lectures for 40 min-
utes. We haven’t been comfortable with that model for a
long time,” he said in an interview. “That’s an old factory
model that doesn’t fit in to contemporary learning.”
The reversal was vindication for parents who started a
petition drive against the program and blasted it at public
meetings.
“What was broken in the Cheshire school system, a

A sweeping tax plan
whose promises face
widespread doubts
By Paul Wiseman
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON — It’s a once-in-a-generation opportunity

to fix a tax code that stifles business investment, keeps
trillions in corporate profits languishing overseas and
slows the American economy.
So argue Republicans in Congress, who hail their tax
overhaul as an economic tonic that will deliver benefits to
ordinary Americans well into the future.
Democrats and most nonpartisan analysts see things
rather differently — and they point to history to argue their
case. They see the tax plan as an ill-conceived bill that will
further enrich the wealthy and swell the government’s debts
by at least $1 trillion in the next decade. Previous tax cuts,
they note, have done little to boost hiring, raise wages or
accelerate economic growth.
Either way, President Donald Trump is prepared to sign
the measure into law this week, to take effect in 2018, after
the House and Senate each passed it Wednesday. The bill —

Florida senator resigns

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A powerful Florida state senator
and Republican candidate for governor resigned Wednesday,
the day after an investigation found cred-

Republican Sen. Jack Latvala contin-

“I have had enough. If this is the

Sick Chipotle workers

prompts new scrutiny

NEW YORK — Health officials are investigating a

IF R M
O Chipotle restaurant in Los Angeles after the burrito chain
reported that some of its workers were ill with nausea, vom-
iting and diarrhea. The company has struggled to win back
customers after previous food safety issues.
Chipotle spokesman Chris Arnold confirmed Wednesday
that the company had reported the illnesses to local health
officials and said the employees are being held out of work.
The restaurant was inspected Tuesday and remains open for
business, Arnold said.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health said
it did not receive any reports from other Chipotle locations
and it is working to determine the cause of illness. Chipotle
said it is aware of only a few reports of customer illnesses
from “user-generated reporting sites.”
Chipotle saw its sales plunge after an E. coli outbreak in
2015. Last summer, a Chipotle in Virginia had to close tem-
porarily after diners fell ill. The company said afterward it
believed an employee was working while sick with what
health officials think was norovirus, a leading cause of ill-
nesses from contaminated food.
Shares in Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. fell nearly 5 per-
cent to close at $298.67 on Wednesday. That’s less than
half of what they were at their 2015 peak, before the E. coli
outbreak.

which they are attached dies back.
Dropping leaves are not always cause for panic,
though; like other evergreens, olive’s older leaves do
eventually drop.
You’ll like the way your olive tree looks even beyond
the holiday season. The evergreen leaves are silvery on
one side and darker green on the other.
Judging from the thousand-plus-year-old specimens
that still survive around the Mediterranean, your olive
tree could live a long time. And it will get more pictur-

becomes gnarled.
You could even harvest ripe fruit from your indoor olive
tree. Give the plant a sunny window in winter and a vaca-

No need to rush the plants indoors in fall. An olive tree
tolerates temperatures below freezing, down to about 20
degrees Fahrenheit before damage occurs.
But you’re not growing an olive tree only for its fruits.
You’re growing it for its beauty, and because it is a sym-
