Introduction (Introduccin)
Hasta el momento has centrado tu atencin en describir quin y cmo eres. Puedes hablar sobre
las habilidades que posees para practicar deportes y pasatiempos, y sobre lo que te gusta y lo
que no. Lo ms probable es que tambin seas competente para describir tus actividades diarias
y permanentes. Ya tienes vocabulario y nociones gramaticales para mantener una conversacin
sobre ti mismo, ahora toca el turno de describir a la familia.

El propsito de la Unidad VI. Tell me about your family es que expreses informacin general sobre
los miembros de una familia (edades, ocupaciones, parentesco, actividades, descripcin fsica,
etc.) para compartirlo de manera responsable con otras personas. Por ejemplo, en el contexto
donde se muestre el rbol genealgico.

En esta unidad aplicars de manera responsable las nociones gramaticales y vocabulario para
solicitar y dar informacin acerca de los diferentes miembros que conforman una familia, tanto
de forma oral como escrita.

1. This is my family
Observa con atencin la siguiente foto y lee la descripcin que se encuentra debajo:

This is a photo of my family. Im next to my cousin Leo, Im wearing a green sweater and a beige
cap. His wife Ana is standing on my left side hugging my sister Lucy. My mom is standing behind
Lucy, she is smiling. My cousins Margaret and Olivia are on the right, they are sisters. Margaret is
wearing a blue jacket. Otto, her son, is in front of me, he is wearing a red t-shirt. He is 5 years old.
Next to him are Ricky and Aisha, they are my nephew and niece. Their mom is my older sister, she
took the picture.

Observa con atencin las palabras en morado, las recuerdas? Para hablar de la familia, es muy
importante tener muy en claro el uso de los adjetivos posesivos, es por ello que los retomaremos
en esta unidad. Revisa la siguiente tabla para recordar su uso.

El verbo have (tener) tambin te puede ser muy til para hablar de tu familia, con ste puedes
decir I have two sisters (Tengo dos hermanas). Tambin puede usarse en negativo: I dont have
children (No tengo hijos/hijas).

Revisa en la siguiente tabla cmo se utiliza el verbo have, tanto en su forma afirmativa como en
su forma negativa:

Para llevar a cabo una conversacin sobre la familia, es importante saber cmo hacer preguntas.
Para ello, hacemos uso del auxiliar do/does, observa la siguiente tabla:

Nota:

Se utiliza el auxiliar do/does para realizar preguntas del tipo s o no. Esto es porque toda la
informacin necesaria para contestar la pregunta est en la pregunta misma.

Recuerda el uso de los pronombres posesivos en el siguiente dilogo.

Friend: Who is in the picture?


Lucy: Its my mothers family; her name is Sarah.
Friend: Does she have a brother?
Lucy: Yes, she does. His name is John and he is her little brother.
She has a sister too, her name is Vanesa and she is the oldest.
Friend: Are they married?
Lucy: Yes, they are. My uncle Mario has a wife, her name is Malena,
they live in Monterrey. My aunt Vanesa has a husband, his name is
Alfred and they live in Mexico City.
Friend: Do you have any cousins?
Lucy: Yes, I do. I have a cousin her name is Joana and shes
Vanesas daughter.
Friend: Does Joana have a brother?
Lucy: No, she doesnt.
Friend: Do you have little cousins.
Lucy: No, I dont.
Friend: So your mother doesnt have a nephew, mmm. What
about Mario and Malena, do they have children?
Lucy: No they dont. They are newlyweds, they just got married.

2. What do they do?

Cuando presentamos a nuestra familia es comn que hablemos sobre sus ocupaciones y profesiones,
o a lo que se dedican. Lee el siguiente texto:

This is my family
My name is Lucy, Im 19 years old. I live in Puebla and Im a high school student. I
also have a part-time job, Im a shop assistant/store clerk at a clothing store.

There are six people in my family: Sarah is my mother and she is a lawyer. Tim
is my father, he is a software engineer. Lisa is my sister and she studies music.
My little brother is 9 years old, he is an elementary school student. Finally,
my grandparents, Theresa and Saul, they have their own business, its a small
restaurant; they are my mothers parents. Oh! Besides my mother, they also have
another son and a daughter, they live in other cities, but I will tell you about them
later on.

Nota:

Otra forma de indicar posesin es aadiendos a los sujetos:

Lisas ---- de Lisa


Sarah is Lisas mother.

Recuerda que para hablar de las profesiones de las personas se utiliza el verbo to be:
Si la palabra o nombre de la persona termina en s, el apstrofe se coloca despus de la
letra s.

Samy has a brother He is Samys brother.


My nieces have a cat, his name is Felix. Felix is my nieces cat.
Carlos has a dog. That is Carlos dog.

Para preguntar por la profesin de las personas se utiliza las pregunta: What do they do?

Lee el siguiente dilogo. Qu preguntas identificas? Para qu se utilizan?

T: Lucy, do you have a Job?


L: Yes I do.
T: What do yo do?
L: I have a part time job, Im a shop assistant at a clothing store.
T: Whats your mothers name?
L: My moms name is Sara.
T: What does she do?
L: She is a lawyer.

En esta unidad has abordado el vocabulario de la familia, tambin has aprendido a describir los
intereses, profesiones o caractersticas de sus integrantes; para ello has retomado elementos de
unidades anteriores, como los adjetivos posesivos. Como ves, al aprender una segunda lengua se
profundiza en algunos aspectos para descubrir otros usos o matices en sus significados, lo cual
facilitar tu comprensin del ingls.
