1. General

The following procedure is for site inspection and testing of Voltage Transformers. Voltage
transformers are used to transform primary voltage down to a value suitable for the
standard ratings of meters and relays and to insulate these devices in the secondary circuit.

2. Prerequisites

The Voltage Transformer has been installed.

3. Safety Precaution

See Safety Procedure CGA-TP-S1-3

4. Test equipment

Insulation Tester (Megger) 1kV

Polarity Tester (Battery + analogue meter)
Multimeter
Wheaston Bridge
Step-up transformer

5. Test procedure

1.General Information

The Voltage Transformer shall be inspected to record ratings, serial number, etc,.

2.Mechanical Check And Visual Inspection

Mechanical check and visual inspection shall be conducted to ensure that the Voltage
Transformer is free from physical damage and that it is installed as per drawings.
Tightness and grounding shall also be checked.

3.Electrical Tests

1.Insulation Test (1kV)

Insulation tests, conduct insulation test between core to core and core to earth Repeat the
same with VT circuits connected.

2. Secondary Winding Resistance

Winding resistance, conduct-winding resistance on all taps by using a Wheaston Bridge.

3. Polarity Test

Connecting a battery, having predetermined polarity, for a short period across the primary
side of the transformer .At the same time the polarity of current, induced in the secondary,
is checked with aid of an analogue ammeter. When connecting +ve, to A, a deflection on
the ammeter connected to a1 shall appear.

4.Ratio Test

Ratio Test, this test is done directly on the VTs by injecting primary voltage
(apprx.1000V). A voltmeter is used to measure the secondary voltage.

5.Burden Test

Burden test, this test is conducted by injecting rated voltage in VT load. The Injection shall
be as near as possible to VT. Measure the current and then calculate the burden.

6.Back Energisation Test

Back energisation Test, inject rated secondary voltage to the secondary winding1 and
measure the voltage at secondary winding 2.The duration shall be 15 minutes.
