Article Analysis

The article I want to analyze is Modeling latent true scores to determine the

utility of aggregate student perceptions as classroom indicators in HLM: the case of

classroom goal structures, which is written by the professor who I had researched on

(Miller & Murdock, 2007). This article is a research paper which used a three-level

hierarchical linear model to measure students personalities (Miller & Murdock,

2007). The object of study in this article is how classroom characteristics such as

students perceptions, attitudes, and teachers behavior can affect students learning

motivations (Miller & Murdock, 2007).

The structure of the article is IMRD, which includes abstract, keywords,

introduction, methods, results and discussion (Swales & Feak, 2012). In the

introduction paragraph, the authors mentioned background theories, such as

expectancy-value theory, goal theory, and self-determination theory, presume that the

students motivated behavior is affected by (Miller & Murdock, 2007, p.83). They

also explained some information which can support their ideas, classroom goal

structures are the goal-related messages that are (Miller & Murdock, 2007, p.84).

These can be Move 1 which show the readers that these points are important to the

research field (Swales & Feak, 2012).

Move 2 of the article, which also called the exigence is: despite the prominence
of goal theory in motivational research (Miller & Murdock, 2007, p.84). The

authors explained that although there were many previous studies discussed the

theories of students motivations, if researchers did not use methods to analyze

students classroom characteristics, the limitation will still exist, so the authors wanted

to use students perceptions to measure their goals (Miller & Murdock, 2007).

Moreover, the authors tried to gather information that can be used as a classroom

indicator (Miller & Murdock, 2007). This can show that the writers were establishing

the niche, they compared the pieces of knowledge in the previous studies which can

prominent her new idea in the article (Swales & Feak, 2012).

Move 3 of the article is the purpose of this study is to investigate the reliability

of classroom (Miller & Murdock, 2007, p.89). This sentence shows the purpose

of the study is to measure how classroom environments can affect students

perceptions and classroom level (Miller & Murdock, 2007). The author directly

pointed out Move 3 by outlining the purpose of the article (Swales & Feak, 2012).

The relevance of the study, which can be identified as Move 3 is that this article

used multilevel measurement model to analyze classroom atmosphere, which is new

research about achievement motivation in the field (Miller & Murdock, 2007). This

research is useful to educators and teachers who can provide better education to

students, and enhance the climate in classrooms to improve students learning

motivations (Miller & Murdock, 2007).

In conclusion, this information suggested that to write a research paper in the

educational field, first, you need to read a great deal of research that can support and

help you explain the background of your ideas. Second, it is important to compare

your ideas from previous research to show the exigence of the study. Third, in the

field of educational psychology, you have to design a complete method which can

help you find out the result that can support the hypothesis you made. Last, which is

the most necessary part, is to write conclusion and discussion paragraph to clarify the

main points that you stated for the research. These are the important steps to write a

research paper in my field.
