About LMS server configuration

Overview
About LMS server configuration
The 9753 LMS is the Alcatel-Lucent management platform for its multi-standard Radio
Access Networks: GSM, W-CDMA, LTE, Small Cells. 9753 LMS provides single-seat
management for all domains and single northbound interfaces for easy integration into the
Network Management Layer. 9753 LMS adapts the client-server architecture.
The 9753 LMS supports installation of 9753 LMS in Simplex (standalone)
configuration.
The 9753 LMS is designed to be installed on HP DL380 Gen8 based servers running with
the RHEL 6.3 operating system.
The 9753 LMS also supports server blades such as HP BL460c Gen8 and HP BL660c
Gen8 in a c7000 enclosure.
You can assign roles to servers during installation. A server can function as an application
server, a data server, or both. You can also use a presentation server to deploy the
9753 LMS client application.
The different types of server roles are as follows:
An application server hosts the 9753 LMS software, the JBoss server, and software
plug-ins that support specific NEs and provide expanded capabilities.
A data server hosts the MySQL database that supports the 9753 LMS, and stores data
required by the 9753 LMS application.
A presentation server, although not configured as part of 9753 LMS server
installation, is a server on which you install a shared 9753 LMS client for use by
multiple operators.

Simplex configuration

Single server simplex configuration

Overview
In single server configuration, both the application and the data server components of the
9753 LMS are installed on the same physical machine.
Figure 1-1, Single server simplex configuration of the 9753 LMS (p. 1-3) shows an
example of a single server simplex configuration.

Figure 1-1 Single server simplex configuration of the 9753 LMS

Scalability considerations
Scalability is solely based on the dimensioning of the hardware. Capacity of the system
can be increased either by replacing the server with a more powerful server or extending
the CPU or memory of the current server.

Redundancy considerations
Single server configuration does not provide redundancy options. Any error condition,
based on physical hardware failure or application failure, will lead to a full failure of the
solution.

Simplex system with a local cold standby server

Overview
In this configuration, a second server is present at the same site as the primary 9753 LMS.
The 9753 LMS software has been installed on the second server in the same way as the
primary server, with a different site name. Backup data is transferred from the active
server to the standby server. If the active server fails, the data can be restored on the
standby server and the standby server started.
Note: This configuration is not recommended if you use specific 5529 Enhanced
Applications. Since the restored information is based on the last backup, some
provisioned items may not be restored, causing an inconsistency between the 9753
LMS, the NE, and the OSS.
Figure 1-2, Simplex configuration of the 9753 LMS with a local cold standby server
(p. 1-5) shows an example of a simplex configuration with a local cold standby server.

Figure 1-2 Simplex configuration of the 9753 LMS with a local cold standby server

A 9753 LMS backup is created on the active server by running the ams_backup.sh script.
The backup contains the following data:
All persistent data from the 9753 LMS database
Data maintained by 5529 Enhanced Applications from the database, provided the
enhanced program is collocated with the 9753 LMS, not installed in standalone mode
on a separate server

While a backup is performed, the MySQL database is locked. This means that all
activities on 9753 LMS are blocked until the backup file is created. If the data server is
not created on top of a ZFS file system, the lock time can be about 20 minutes. If ZFS is
used, the lock time of the database is reduced to seconds.
The data can be transferred from the active server to the standby server in one of the
following ways:
Physical transfer of the disk. This option requires that both machines be identical
hardware. This form of redundancy requires a manual intervention on the hardware
and requires both the operating system and the application to be started. This long
start-up time will lead to long downtime in case of failure.
Transfer of the 9753 LMS backup file. The transfer can be done using several means
such as tape storage, central storage, FTP, or SFTP. Upon failure of the active system,
the backup can be restored on the standby site by running the ams_restore.sh script,
after which the application can be started.

Scalability considerations
Scalability is solely based on the dimensioning of the hardware. The capacity of the
system can be increased either by replacing the server with a more powerful server or
extending the CPU or memory of the current server.

Redundancy considerations
Because this solution provides redundancy by using a cold standby server, the amount of
time for the new system to become active can be substantial. It can take up to 30 minutes
to restore a 9753 LMS, depending on network size. The typical 9753 LMS start-up time is
15 minutes.

Simplex system with a geographical cold standby server

Overview
This configuration is similar to the Simplex system with a local cold standby server in
this section, except that the second server is located at a different site from the primary
9753 LMS. The 9753 LMS software has been installed on the second server in the same
way as the primary server, with a different site name. Backup data is transferred from the
active server to the standby server. If the active server fails, the data can be restored on
the standby server and the standby server can be started.
Note: This configuration is not recommended if you use specific 5529 Enhanced
Applications. Since the restored information is based on the last backup, some
provisioned items may not be restored, causing an inconsistency between the 9753

Logical network setup

Overview
In 9753 LMS, network traffic can, for the most part, be categorized in the following
types:
Client and Operations support systems (OSS) related
Note: LMS supports connection to several OSSs
Backup/restore related
NE related
For performance and security reasons, you should install the 9753 LMS so that each
category of traffic is routed over a separate network. If possible, use a different NIC on
the server for each network. During 9753 LMS installation, the installer requests several
IP addresses and interfaces. To reduce the risk of intrusion, Alcatel-Lucent recommends
that you enter only the minimal amount of IP addresses and interfaces.
Note: 2 x 4 = 8 gigabit Ethernet ports are available.

Ethernet bonding
Ethernet bonding used in active-standby mode. When one Ethernet port is active, the
other associated one is in standby.
The network traffic goes through 4 pairs of Ethernet ports:
OAM_OAM group: Northbound connection between one server and client stations,
plus OSS, plus other servers
OAM_Backup group: Connection between one server and the Backup/Restore server.
Depending on the hardware this group can be included in the OAM_OAM group.
OAM_NE group: Southbound Connection between one server and the NEs
OAM_Cluster group: Connection between one server and the other servers of the
cluster

Northbound network
Operators can use the 9753 LMS client application on a PC, using the Windows client.
The PC must be connected to the presentation network. Although the client does not need
to reach all machines in this configuration, the client is more vulnerable to failure within
the 9753 LMS cluster.
Figure 2-1, Client network (p. 2-4) shows a client network.

Figure 2-1 Client network

Each 9753 LMS simplex or data server can have one or more network interfaces that are
connected to the client network. You can connect each interface to a different subnet or in
the same subnet to provide more bandwidth. Each LMS server has a pair of ports on a
pair of NICs to connect to all the PC clients.
For security reasons, Alcatel-Lucent recommends that you connect the Northbound
network to the public Internet only with a firewall and VPN in between.

DCN
The DCN is the most important part of the networks. All communication between the
9753 LMS and the NEs is routed over the DCN. For SNMP communication, backup and
restore data, time synchronization and service configuration are included.
As communicating with the NE is the basic function of an EMS, the DCN must be a
well-constructed, reliable network with enough throughput at all times.
You do not need to provide configuration data about the DCN when you install the
9753 LMS. Also, no post-installation configuration is required. The 9753 LMS IP
addresses of the NEs are provisioned in advance which provides an interface for
communication with the NEs.
Each 9753 LMS simplex or application server should be able to communicate with all the
configured NEs. IP connectivity with a data server is not required.

For security reasons, Alcatel-Lucent recommends that you isolate data servers from the
DCN. Do not connect the DCN to the public Internet or other private networks with large
user bases. If you must connect your DCN to another network, use a firewall and VPN
between the DCN and the other network.
Each 9753 LMS server has a pair of ports on a pair of NICs connected to all the NEs.
Figure 2-2, DCN configuration (p. 2-5) shows a DCN configuration.
