What is Civil Engineering? What does it comprise of?

Civil Engineering is one of the broadest and oldest of the engineering disciplines, extending
across many technical specialties.

Civil Engineering is concerned with the planning, design, construction and maintenance of a
diverse range of projects from single storied buildings to high rise structures, from water supply
projects like bridges and dams to wastewater treatment plants, from railways to navigation
ports to airports.

Based on the scope of Civil Engineering it is categorized into various disciplines

Some of them are Geotechnical Engineering; here the students will be studying the properties of
soil and how it will affect the load bearing capacity of soil, before the inception of any project.

Structural engineering deals with the load acting and the stresses generated in different
structural members and how to design these members to efficiently counteract these loads.

Transportation Engineering deals with planning, designing, construction and maintenace of

various modes of transportation like roads, railways, navigation ports and airports.

Hydraulic and water supply engineering deals with the loads acting on different water supply
and water retaining structures like canals and reservoirs and also waste water treatment plants.

There are some new emerging areas of Civil engineering which are:

Green technology which deals with the study of usage of alternate sustainable materials and
techniques to make buildings energy efficient thereby conserving our natural resources for
future generations.

Nano material technology deals with altering the properties of construction materials like
steel, cement and glass at nano level i.e, at the level of one billionth of a meter to make
construction more reliable and economical.

What kind of jobs do Civil Engineering students usually get after they graduate?

A Civil engineering graduate can construction companies in India and abroad.

They can also work for government agencies like Public Works Department, Water Supply
Board, Electricity Board or as Gazetted officers for various Engineering departments after
clearing Indian Engineering Services Examinations.

Some also start their own construction firms for public and private projects or also work in
research and development

If you are interested in Post graduation in India or abroad, MS and M Tech specialization can be
carried out in the areas of Green technology and sustainability, Nano material technology,
Construction Engineering and Management, Energy-Water-Environment Sustainability,
Geotechnical Engineering to name a few.

Placements at Civil Engineering Department are happening both in core and software Industries.
Some of the companies in which our students find placements are Seacon, L&T constructions,
CBRE group, Reliance Infrastructure, Nextgen technologies, Sycone group, JMC Pvt Ltd, Sobha
Developers, Infosys, and so on

To fuel the growth potential of each student, Civil Engineering department carries out various
activities which are technical as well social in nature. Some of them are ;

Industrial Visits are organized for the student to understand the best practices of the industry so
that they are industry ready.

Interaction with Fire Safety laboratory which is a one of its kind safety laboratory in India,
located in the university campus gives students an edge in learning the concepts of fire safety
materials in construction.

Students are involved in Government funded research projects and ongoing material testing
consultancy works in the department.

Leadership qualities among students are nurtured through brain storming sessions among UG
and PG students which bring about some innovative ideas

Special attention to underperforming students is given through group learning, Quiz and
seminars.

The students, department and the faculty are members of various professional bodies like
Indian Green Building Council(IGBC), Indian Concrete Institute(ICI), Association of Consulting
Civil Engineers (ACCE), Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE).

Faculty in the department are mostly from Industrial background carrying with them knowledge
of best practices followed in the industry.

Civil Engineering club which goes by the name Atharva, conducts annual programs with
challenging competitions and activities in both technical and cultural spheres which fosters good
fellowship among students of all branches.

Fusion of different cultures is encouraged by organizing Cultural Fest, Hostel Day and Food
festivals.

Social initiatives like Blood Donation camps, Swach Bharath campaign, Safe Sanitation and
Safe Drinking Water workshops are arranged as part of universitys social responsibility.

With these, the department prepares the student to be industry ready seeking attractive
remunerations.
Aspiring Civil Engineers, I invite you to come and experience all that the department at Jain
University has to offer with this course to make you the best in the industry.
