What turns a stranger or acquaintance into a friend? Do you know right away if you are
going to like someone? Some people think that any stranger can become a friend if they
spend enough time together. That may be true for some people. But one thing most of us
agree on is that true friendships seem to happen when people have something in
common. Perhaps we see a part of ourselves in our friends. Maybe seeing the good in
them helps us to see the good in us as well.
2. Many friends feel a connection when they first meet. True False

I am Peter and I live in Germany. In summer, I like to travel to Italy because of the
weather and the people there. Last summer, I took a plane from Munich to Rome. From
the airport we went to our hotel by bus. We stopped at a small restaurant for a quick
meal. The driver parked the bus behind the restaurant. Nobody could find the bus and the
driver, so we waited outside the restaurant for one hour. The driver was walking through
the small park near the restaurant which we did not know. So we were angry with him.
But my holidays were great. We sat round campfires and went dancing till the early
mornings.

When people have a cold, a fever, or the flu, they usually go to the doctor for
help, or they get some medicine from the drugstore. But many people also use home
remedies for common illness. Here are some simple home remedies.
Colds
Lots of people eat hot chicken soup when they have a cold. They find it clears the head
and the nose. Some people rub oil on their chest for a cold. Other people drink a mixture
of red pepper, hot water, sugar, lemon juice, and milk or vinegar.
Headaches
Apply an ice pack or cold cloth to your head, or splash your face with cold water. Its also
good to put your hands into hot water and leave them there for several minutes. You
shouldnt also read or watch TV.
Insomnia
Drink a large glass of warm milk. Its also good to soak in a warm bath.

When a virus attacks your body, its hard for your body to get rid of it. Blood rushes to
your nose and brings congestion with it. You feel terrible because you can't breathe well,
but your body is actually "eating" the virus. Your temperature rises and you get a fever,
but the heat of your body is killing the virus. You also have a runny nose to stop the virus
from getting to your cells. You may feel miserable, but actually your wonderful body is
doing everything it can to kill the cold.
Different people have different remedies for colds. In the United States and some other
countries, for example, people might eat chicken soup to feel better. Some people take
hot baths and drink warm liquids. Other people take medicines to stop the fever,
congestion, and runny nose.
There is one interesting thing to note - some scientists say taking medicines when you
have a cold is actually bad for you. The virus stays in you longer because your body
doesn't have a way to fight it and kill it. Bodies can do an amazing job on their own. There
is a joke, however, on taking medicine when you have a cold. It goes like this If takes
about 1 week to get over a cold if you don't take medicine, but only 7 days to get over a
cold if you take medicine.

Men, women, and children like sports. Some like tennis or volleyball. Others like
soccer, football, or baseball. Many like basketball. Each sport has different ways and
equipment to play.
Volleyball uses a ball and a high net. Six players hit the ball with their hands over
the net. The other team hits it back.
Basketball uses a ball and two baskets. Five players on each team throw the ball
into the basket with their hands. Each team throws the ball in the basket in the other
basket.
In soccer, the eleven players of a team kick the ball. Only one player uses his
hands. The others do not use their hands. In football, the eleven players take the ball in
their hands. They kick the ball too. But they take it in their hands first.

Catalog Shopping
People in the US often shop from catalogs. There are special catalogs for almost every
need including clothing, furniture, health and beauty products, and things for the kitchen.
People also order about 40% of their music from music club catalogs. Customers say that
music stores are too noisy.
Television shopping
Television shopping began in 1986. About 5% to 8% of the American public now shops by
television. Some popular shopping channels are the Home Shopping Network and QVC.
Customers say that television shopping is easier than shopping in a store. How do they
buy things? They make a phone call and charge the item to their credit card. And TV
shopping channels are on late at night, so people can go shopping any time.
Computer Shopping
Is computer shopping the way of the future? About 3% of American household now have
personal computers, and shopping by computer (or shopping on-line) is interesting to
more people every day. Already, shoppers can use their computers to order many
different products, such as computer products, flowers, food, T-shirt, and posters. And
new on-line shopping services appear everyday. Soon people may be able to shop for
anything, anytime, anywhere in the world.

Conversation 1
A: "Hey John, did you register for classes yet?"
B: "I register this Friday."
A: "What classes do you plan on taking?"
B: "I really want to take the communication class, but I don't know if it will be available."
A: "Is that class really that popular?"
B: "Yeah. I tried to get in last semester, but it was full by the time I registered."
A: "What other classes are you going to take?"
B: "I still need to take English 201, but I really don't like writing."
A: "I took that class already. There is a lot of writing, but it's not that bad."
B: "Oh really? Who was the instructor? There are like 4 different instructors to choose
from."
A: "I had Professor Mahoney."
B: "Is he an easy grader?"
A: "I'm not sure if he is or not, but I thought he was definitely fair."
B: "Do you mind if I ask you what you got?"
A: "Not at all. I got a 3.8."
B: "Well, what did you get in English 101 last year?"
A: "I got a 4.0 in that class."
B: "Well, I can't compare to you. I got a 3.1 in English 101. That means if you got a lower
grade in English 201, it must be harder."
A: "It's not what it appears. I actually tried harder in the 101 class. If I put as much effort
into the 201 class, I would have received the same grade."
B: "Oh. That helps. Thanks."
Conversation 2
A: "Hey Mike. I forgot about registration. I'm a day late, so all the classes are mostly full.
What do you think I should do?"
B: "You're screwed. You can't do anything about that. You have to hope that you get
some classes that will be useful."
A: "Do you think going to the registration building will help at all."
B: "No. They will tell you the same thing in a worse way."
A: "Did you register yet?"
B: "Of course. Registering for classes is not something you want to miss."
A: "What classes do you think are still open?"
B: "Well, I know psychology 101 is a big class, so there will always be seats in that class.
You can also get into Sociology."
A: "That's helpful. Thanks. But what do you think about philosophy. I wanted to take that
class this semester."
B: "I took that class last year. The professor is really cool, so if you go to his office, you
can have him sign a card that will let you in even if the class is full."
A: "He does that?"
B: "I guess that's because so many people drop out of that class."
A: "That makes sense. I think I'll do that. Thanks for all the help."
B: "No problem man."
