My favorite time of the year is the
winter holidays. Colder weather
makes many of us go from shorts
to pants more often, or throw an
extra blanket on the bed, or maybe
turn up the heat. There is just
something about this time of year,
when many of us are in a spirit
of giving, thinking of others, and
being nicer than normal because
we have a reason to be joyful.
It is also that time of year when my
wife pulls out all of her Christmas
clothes and jewelry, and I pull
out the many storage cases of
Christmas decorations. We start
decorating our house the first
weekend after Thanksgiving,
which is also the same weekend
we go down to buy our tree. I have
lived in San Luis Obispo for over
30 years now, and I think our area
is one of the best places to live,
especially when it comes to the
holiday season.
I love bundling up, going to
downtown San Luis Obispo, and
finding a good spot on the curb
along Higuera Street to watch the
Christmas parade roll by. I have
been going to the parade for as long
as I can recall. If you have never
been to the SLO parade, then this
is something that you need to put
on your to do list this year. We
always sit down by McLintocks to
watch the parade and wave at the
people on the floats. I have seen
some of the craziest and wildest
SLO Christmas Parade in 1964
floats in the world.
We enjoy seeing local celebrities,
from TV news reporters, city
council members, fire fighters,
policemen and policewomen, to
other special local heroes. But
my favorite sights are the floats
loaded with kids and their families.
I have seen floats break down
and be pushed to the end of the
parade. I saw some chickens jump
off a 4H float one year. It was wild
watching little kids chase down the
chickens and put them back on the
float! I have seen some old photos
from back in the 1960s, with the
streets decorated and kids dressed
up like presents or elves, much
like you might see today. When
it comes to parades in every town
in our region, some things never

The winter holidays also bring some
great entertainment to our local
live theaters. My personal favorite
is the Great American Melodramas
production of A Christmas Carol.
We love getting our seats along
the back or side, loading up with
a chili dog, nachos, and a big piece
of cake, and enjoying a marvelous
show that reminds us that giving
to others less fortunate is what
this season is about.
Of course, the Nutcracker and
other holiday shows have been a
part of our community for many
years. Every year, several of
my students are involved in the
Nutcracker, and its lots of fun
hearing what role they are playing
in this years production. I have
had Sugar Plum Fairies, Flowers,
Dewdrops, Snowflakes, Dolls, and
Angels in my class over the years.
This year, I have at least three girls
in my class that will perform in a
production of the Nutcracker.
Lets not forget holiday shopping
in the downtowns in our local
towns and cities. San Luis Obispo
normally will be festooned with
holiday colors, trees, and a
reindeer or two in the stores along
main streets. For over 100 years,
local stores have been reminding
us who not to forget on our lists of
nice little boys and girls.
As you visit Morro Bay, Arroyo
Grande, Pismo Beach, Paso
Robles, Atascadero, and all of our
other wonderful towns and cities,
you can enjoy a winter holiday
spirit that has been a part of local
tradition for generations. The one
place I always miss at this time of

The age-old traditions of Hanukkah
(Chanukah) and Christmas were
celebrated by many of the founding
fathers of San Luis Obispo County.
We have gathered together in
Mission Plaza for many years to
celebrate people of all faiths and
traditions.
Let me tell you about the very first
Christmas that was celebrated
in San Luis Obispo County. It
was a stormy winter day back on
December 24, 1769, when Captain
Gaspar de Portola came out of the
forest where Cambria is today.
He and his 60 men were not only
wet and cold, but they were very
hungry and exhausted from their
march through steep valleys and
mountains.
As Portola and his men settled
down for the night with hunger
pangs in their stomachs, out of a
clearing came several Chumash
Native Americans carrying food
to share with these starving
Spaniards. The Chumash had no
idea that this was a holy night
for these Spanish explorers, but
Portola and his men viewed this
gift of food as a miracle, for which
they had prayed fervently.
The tradition of giving and caring
on the Central Coast goes back
over 243 years, and still flourishes

Recently, controversy has
erupted regarding the use
of merry Christmas vs.happy
holidays. Though the controversy
is intriguing, I find myself
etymologically interested in the
difference between wishing
someone a merry time vs. wishing
that same someone a happy time.
Merry made its way into Old
English before records of such
things were kept. Merry meant
agreeable, sweet, pleasant,
or melodious. Merrys source
was a Proto-Germanic word
meaning brief. Yes, brief. Some
argue the connection came
through the idea that happiness
is fleeting, therefore merriness
is also fleeting. Others posit
a connection to the thinking
behind the idiom time flies when
youre having fun or the idea that
one enjoys ones pastime in brief

broadened its meanings to include
