RALEIGH The North Carolina
football team, in a 33-21 loss to rival
N.C. State on Saturday, showed why
it finished with its worst record
since 2006, but was also a unit that
didnt just roll over.
With his preseason goals unachiev-
able a little over halfway through the
season, head coach Larry Fedora sold
his players on the idea of playing for
pride. He communicated the same
ahead of this weekends game, which
would be the final act of a season
marred by injury and misfortune.
We know every time we step on
the field its a one-on-one battle,
and we want to win our one-on-one
battle because another mans say-
ing that he can beat you, safety J.K.
Britt said. And you just have to have
enough pride to not let it happen.
The season-ending tilt with the
Wolfpack offered UNC (3-9, 1-7
ACC), winners of its previous two
games, a chance to end the year on
the upswing. For a while, it looked
like the Tar Heels could do just that.

Moses Musilu never suspected
13 cents would break the bank.
In fact, he remembers the
Board of Elections explicitly tell-
ing him it would not.
Musilu, a UNC senior, was
disqualified from the Mr. and
Miss UNC election in October
after self-reporting $25.13 of
campaign expenses 13 cents
over the $25 limit allotted to can-
didates.
Senior Alexis Juarez was also
ruled ineligible from the Miss
UNC race after she reported
$36.28.
I was quite devastated actu-
ally, Musilu said. It was disap-
pointing to see that little differ-

son, and relying on the playmaking
ability of a wide receiver who had
three career catches entering 2017,
UNC held a slender 14-12 lead late
in the third quarter.
Defensively, the Tar Heels were
managing to make do with a scheme
that relied on six defensive backs
because of injuries to three of its top

Musilu said his disqualifica-
tion caught him off guard, but its
one of the latest in a string of dis-
qualifications for small violations
in student elections, first during
student body president elections
last spring, then during the Mr.
and Miss UNC election this past
October.
In the wake of the disqualifi-
cations, the continued discord
between what the rules say and
how they are interpreted has left
past candidates, including those
disqualified, disgruntled with the
process.
The confusion around dis-
qualifications
The confusion during the Mr.
and Miss UNC election revolves
around a mandatory meeting
held by the BOE on Sept. 28 in
the Student Union.
Senior John Paul Zalaquett,
who also ran for Mr. UNC, said
the purpose of the meeting was
to clear up confusion regard-
ing the rules, but the effect was

UNC just ran out of gas.
Thats one way to describe the
one-minute, 39-second stretch from
near the end of the third quarter to
the start of the fourth that ultimate-
ly led to the Tar Heels ninth defeat
of the season.

Before the meeting on Sept.
28, UNCs guidelines for elec-
tion regulations Title III of
the Student Code had been
amended twice by the UNC
Undergraduate Senate since
the last student body president
election, first in April, and later
passed by the senate on Sept. 12.
It has since been amended once
more, passed by the senate on
Oct. 30.
The main change in the new
legislation was the shift from
a 10-point system to a tier sys-
tem, in which candidates are
given warnings before being
fully disqualified. The initial
spending limit that penalized

Bubba Cunningham has overseen nine
national titles and 10 runner-up finishes
over the past six years as athletic direc-
tor. With his new contract announced by
Chancellor Carol Folt on Nov. 17, he has six
more years at UNC to add to the trophy
case. But it hasnt been an easy six years.
After Dick Baddour stepped down as ath-
letic director in 2011, Bubba Cunningham
inherited an academic scandal that would
challenge Carolina Athletics for the next
six years. Despite a negative shadow cast
from the investigation, Carolina Athletics
has come out into the clear following the
NCAA ruling on Oct. 13 thanks to the
guidance of Cunningham.
When he first arrived in 2011,
Cunningham reached out to Paul Friga, a
clinical associate professor of strategy and
entrepreneurship in the Kenan-Flagler
Business School, to conduct a strategic
plan for Carolina Athletics. Before they
could create a plan to move forward, Friga
and Cunningham had to evaluate the cur-
rent condition of the program.

Orange County Board of
Commissioners unanimously agreed to
repeal an ordinance that made it unlaw-
ful for women over the age of 14 years,
or any other physically developed female
person, to expose their breasts below
the top part of the areola in public, ear-
lier this month.
The regulating exposure of the human
female body to view ordinance was estab-
lished in 1971 and is very rarely enforced.
Current North Carolina law, which super-
sedes local ordinances, states women may

team in against N.C. State.

involved a comprehensive assessment of
the landscape of an external and internal
view, Friga said. Externally we looked
at factors that were affecting athletics at
that point and then internally we looked
at our strengths and weaknesses as an
organization. We conducted extensive
surveys of student-athletes, of faculty, of
administration, of alumni. We created a
task force and spent a six month period
doing analysis.
During the visioning portion of
this process, the task force decided
to make responsibility, innovation,
service and excellence the core values
of Carolina Athletics, which would
shape Cunninghams career as ath-
letic director. Friga is currently work-
ing with Cunningham to release an
updated strategic plan. Moving forward,
Cunningham said he is aiming to grow
Carolina Athletics further following the
NCAA investigation.
Now, I think the biggest challenge is to
earn back the trust of the University com-
munity and nationally, Cunningham said.
Cunningham came to UNC as
an experienced leader.
He served as the athletic director
at Ball State University from 2002 to
2005, and the University of Tulsa from

The board reviewed several other
ordinances at the Nov. 9 meeting that
might be considered out of date or in
need of amendment. County Attorney
John Roberts recommended to the
board that they repeal the ordinance,
which was described as likely illegal and
discriminatory.
This is one measure that is discrimi-
natory to women, County Commissioner
Renee Price said. Its a very old policy.
The county considers any violation of
the ordinance a misdemeanor. While law
enforcement cannot enforce the ordinance
because of state law, Price said she thinks
it is important to repeal the ordinance to
provide gender equality in public spaces.
She said repealing the ordinance could

The Hip-Hop Nutcracker: Q&A with MC
Kurtis Blow, director Jennifer Weber
The Hip Hop Nutcracker
was back by popular demand
for two shows on its third
national tour following the
success of the two previous
sold-out tours on Friday, Nov.
24 at the Durham Performing
Arts Center.
The Hip Hop Nutcracker is
a contemporary, NYC-style,
re-imagining of Tchaikovskys
timeless music with a cast
of a dozen all-star dancers,
DJ and violinist. It features
special guest, and one of hip
hops founding fathers, Kurtis
Blow, who opens up the show
with his introduction in sev-
eral cities around the country.

KB: I was inspired to be a part
of this production because
of the fusion of two forms of
music: hip-hop and classical.
The young Bboys and Bgirls
take the art form to the next
level. The Hip Hop Nutcracker
is a good look for hip-hop.
DTH: Why is it important to
bring hip-hop to new audi-
ences?
KB: Like any business, expan-
sion is crucial to the success
of the company. We, who are
in hip-hop, always felt that
this culture is for everyone.
So, its only natural that we
are always looking for new
audiences.
DTH: What are some highlights
of the show?
KB: The intro, the violinist and
DJ collab, the magical shoes
that defeat evil, the mom and
dad are reunited and the finale.
DTH: Why should people come

KB: People should come out
to the show to experience the
fun for the whole family. A
holiday season classic is need-
ed now more than ever.

Jennifer Weber: The Hip Hop
Nutcracker translates
Tchaikovskys score into the
language of hip-hop dance.
The plot is transported to
present day-NYC where all
the classic characters from
the original Nutcracker are
re-imagined. You will see the
mice battle soldiers, break-
dancing snowflakes, toys
that come to life and a love
story between Maria-Clara
and the Nutcracker. The plot
is similar to the original,
but with a contemporary,
urban twist. The Hip Hop
Nutcracker, at its core, is a
story about love, commu-
nity, using art to inspire and
of course, the magic of the
holiday season.

DTH: What inspired you to put
on this production?
JW: I was inspired by the
music itself and the chal-
lenge of choreographing hip-
hop to such an iconic classi-
cal score.
DTH: What are some highlights
of the show?
JW: The dancing is incred-
ible and we also have some
amazing duets between our
violinist, Emily Simone and
DJ Boo.
DTH: Why should people come
out to the show?
JW: The Hip Hop Nutcracker
is an opportunity to see some
of the best hip-hop dancers
in the world take the stage as
stars. This is a show for every-
one. It is great for families,
people who love hip-hop, peo-
ple who love the Tchaikovsky
score and anyone looking for
a new holiday tradition.

my cat
to UNCs
BOG
I
wake up the same way
almost every morn-
ing. One or both of two
cats bangs on my door until
I open it. I dont know why
they do this, and I deeply
resent it. Of two cats, one,
Ariel, is particularly adept at
so thunderously hitting my
door that he becomes impos-
sible to ignore. This is only
one of his many flaws.
He cant be picked up for
more than 10 seconds at a
time without flipping out, he
sheds all over all my cloth-
ing and he refuses to eat on
a consistent schedule which
only enables the gluttonous
second cat, Meta.
I say all of this because
I want you to know I have
considered Ariels flaws. I love
him and think hes the best
cat ever, but also I hate him
and desperately wish a hawk
carried Ariel off for lunch.
However, after deep reflec-
tion I think my cat, Ariel,
should be appointed to the
UNC Board of Governors.
Ariel would be a great can-
didate because many of his
best qualities are currently
underrepresented on the
board. Hes displayed a high
level of curiosity that, while
perhaps fatal to him, is exact-
ly the kind of outlook that
should be cultivated in the
UNC system. His deep inter-
est in the light reflected off
my phone screen seems likely
to translate to an interest in
creating strong communities
of learning across the state.
Ariel is also a commit-
ted egalitarian. Who better
to ensure broad and equal
access to higher education in
North Carolina than the same
cat who is more than willing
to split my dinner and my
couch with me 50/50?
Perhaps most importantly
Ariel has a deep and dem-
onstrated love for the UNC
system. Some might claim
this is just a result of the fact
that his owners paychecks all
come from UNC connected
entities. That is libel, and
Ariel is very litigious.
I am aware there are some
critiques, but none of them
sufficiently justify why my cat
isnt on the BOG.
Its true that Ariel doesnt
have experience in higher
education, but that isnt even
kind of a prerequisite for
being on the BOG. He might
not be white or a Republican,
but a little diversity wouldnt
kill us.
Yes Ariel can be obstinate,
but if anything, thats a boon
on a board full of far right
partisans. Sure, he has a ten-
dency to be destructive, but
he has never been so as reck-
lessly devastating as destroy-
ing a Civil Rights Center.
Finally, I cede that Ariel
is a cat, but its not like the
humans of the BOG have
been doing a good, or even
acceptable, job.
Until Ariel gets the posi-
tion he deserves, we all need
to continue to demand more
from the board. Ariels middle
name is Robespierre, which
might be ominous if he
werent a cat.

should take action
The BOT made an
effort to listen, but
whats next?

t the Nov. 15 Board
of Trustees meet-
ing, students, fac-
ulty, staff and community
members crowded into
the Chancellors Ballroom
at the Carolina Inn. A
charged silence fell over
the room as the Board of
Trustees Chair Haywood
Cochrane explained the
speaking guidelines and
called up the first speaker.
Over the next few
hours, almost 30 speak-
ers passionately expressed
their views on Silent Sam.
Each speaker was given
three minutes to talk. The
emotions of the crowd
seemed to swell with each
plea for the monument
to be taken down, while
outwardly we all stayed as
composed as the quaint
decor of the room seemed
to demand.
Each speaker addressed
a different facet of the his-
tory and current destruc-
tiveness of the statue. The
director of CAPS declared
our campus was in the
middle of a mental health
crisis, students spoke with
outrage and hurt about the
racist significance of the
statue and distinguished
faculty reminded us all
that this struggle is not
new.
The gravity of the situ-
ation and the obviousness
of the solution seemed to
sink into the plush chair
cushions with each speak-
er. The hurried applause
bounced off the ornate
chandeliers as the next
speaker took their place at
the podium. All but three
of the 30 speakers declared
Silent Sam an injustice.
The Editorial Board
applauds Chancellor Folt
for urging the Board of
Trustees to take the time to
listen without interruption.
But providing a dignified
physical space to hear the
campuss beliefs means
nothing if the Board of

hen we think of
UNC, a couple
of things come
to mind the vibrant
campus life, the incred-
ible athletic and academic
departments, the hospital
system filled with passion-
ate people working to help
lives. There is an image of
the university that is under-
stood implicitly by not only
members of our community
but nationwide.
But what is that image
leaving out? When we
think of UNC, who are the
people that we think belong
here? Who looks like they
belong here?
Its easy to fall into a nar-
row mindset, and easier to
forget all the international
faculty and staff that this
university depends on.
They belong here and this
is their space as much as it
is ours, but it seems to be
difficult for them to receive
the same amount of respect
as their American-born
counterparts.

Trustees then chooses to
ignore the voices they have
now undeniably heard.
Dear Board of Trustees,
Up until this point, you
have blatantly ignored
thousands of community
members who have worked
tirelessly for decades to
remove this racist sym-
bol from our campus. All
the while, you have been
complacent with the hypo-
critical mobilization of a
campaign For All Kind
widely recognized for its
posters plastered with the
faces of Black and brown
students. While its hard
to believe that two hours
of speeches will inspire
you to act when decades
of protests and pleas have
failed to, we want you to
prove that, in fact, you lis-
tened deeply and are brave
enough to be on the just
side of history. We all heard
what you heard if you do
nothing now, how will you
justify your inaction?
Sitting in a posh ball-
room to listen is, quite
frankly, easy. And a com-
plicated problem such as

hearing the same type of
American English all our
lives, and may have found
a new accent difficult to get
used to, or a teaching phi-
losophy that is at odds with
what we were brought up
learning.
However, college is a
place to be challenged,
not to be handed the same
exact thing that we have
experienced all our lives.
An accent is never a
signifier of intelligence or
competence, but many
students who find them-
selves frustrated with their
professors way of speak-
ing English use a lecturers
accent against them, using
it as a reason to find fault
with their teaching abilities.
Accents are also an easy
way to make jokes, enabling
students to be rude to their
instructors simply because
the students cannot or will
not adjust, falling
back on the excuse
I just cant under-
stand what they are
saying!
Respectfully ask
your instructors to
repeat themselves,
or ask for clarifica-
tion in an email.

through simple means.
We are not interested in
your capacity to listen,
we are interested in your
capacity to act. We wait
with anticipation to see
what you will do now. If
you listen to us only to
turn around and act with
cowardice, you suggest
that the voices of this
campus community are
meaningless, even when
they are seated in a space
dripping with sophistica-
tion. It is clear that you
have impetus to act. As
eloquently put by profes-
sor Buck Goldstein in his
three minute speech, this
meeting made clear that
your hands are tied only if
you tie them.
Dear UNC Community,
If there is one encour-
aging takeaway from
Wednesday, it is a
renewed faith in the
Chapel Hill commu-
nity. There is strength in
speaking up even if you
only have three minutes.
Some students avoid ask-
ing international TAs and
graduate students for help
because of their accent, not
realizing that the insight
of someone from a differ-
ent background can be an
invaluable resource.
We trust that the univer-
sity has picked competent
and passionate professors
who want to help us learn
their field of expertise, so
why cant this be applied to
international instructors as
well?
As course evaluations
are coming up, dont be so
quick to condemn an inter-
national instructor for their
teaching abilities. Take the
time to think if you actually
had difficulty understand-
ing their speech, or if it was
just stemming from frus-
tration after having to face
something new.

Re: the continuing con-
troversy over Silent Sam,
I have struggled to come to
some conclusions of my own.
I have heard many
voices calling for the statues
removal and a few asking
that it remain. But who has
the authority to approve its
removal if that is sought?
It is clear that the NC
General Assembly has placed
severe roadblocks to any
action by local authorities
or higher education institu-
tions, placing the decision
ostensibly in the hands of the
NC Historical Commission
and circumscribing any deci-
sion by almost impossible
restrictions.
Thus, the UNC Board of
Trustees and the Chancellor
do not have the authority
to act, whether they decide
to remove the statue or not.
What is to be done then?
Are we doomed to con-
tinuing protests and growing
animosity on both sides? Is
our democratic process so
broken that there is no hope?
In my opinion the legislature
must be persuaded to return
the right to make decisions
about memorials on public
land to local authorities.
Once again the legislature
has clearly overstepped its
appropriate authority.
With that accomplished
local entities could respond
as they see fit. In the case
of UNC at Chapel Hill,
The Chancellor, Board of
Trustees and other stake
holders could work out a
course of action suitable to
the Carolina campus.
I believe we have come
to the point that demands
compromise on a plan that
will honor both sides in the
debate. My own view is to
reimagine the statue and
rededicate it to the memory
of UNC alumni who died on
both sides of the conflict.
Remove all symbols and
plaques about the original
donors and any reference
to the Confederacy. Replace
them with honest and
fair interpretations of the
causes and outcome of the
Civil War. Surely, men and
women of good will within
the University can find a way
to honor the dead combat-
ants without removing this
beautiful sculpture and with-
out ascribing racial over-
tones to its existence.

College affordability is
not out of reach
TO THE EDITOR:
Over the past three
decades, the cost of higher
education has skyrocketed.
College tuition has increased
by 559 percent, while text-
book prices have surged by
an astonishing 812 percent.
UNC students pay on
average $1,604 a year on
supplies, well higher than
the College Board National
average of $1,250. The aver-
age price of a new textbook
increased by 38 percent
between 2011-2012 and
2015-2016. These prices are
hurting students wallets and
GPAs. As discovered by the
U.S. Public Interest Research
Group (PIRG), 65 percent of
students reported they have
skipped buying or renting
an assigned textbook due to
cost. 94 percent of them real-
ized this would impact their
grade.
PIRG chapters at UNC-
CH, UNC-G and NC State
are taking action to remedy
this. UNC-CHs NCPIRG
chapter has partnered with
their Student Government
to get professors to pledge to
explore affordable material
options for their classes. By
signing this pledge, profes-
sors become partners in
NCPIRGs efforts to research
and consider more affordable
options for course materials,
such as open educational
resources (OERs).
OERs are faculty-written
materials published under
an open copyright license
which are proven to be as
effective as traditionally-
published textbooks if not
more so. Best of all, they are
100 percent free.
In just one week, the
UNC effort has secured 20+
signatures from professors
committing to explore more
affordable course materials.

Housing woes: long lines and short deadlines

On an early September
morning, a line of students
wrapped around the build-
ing at Shortbread Lofts. They
were waiting outside to secure
an apartment for the upcom-
ing school year, even though
they had only lived in their
current apartments or dorms
for a little over a month.
But since the demand for
off-campus apartments has
increased in Chapel Hill, so
has the pressure to secure a
place to live.
2017 is the first year the
off-campus leasing process
has started in September. It
has gotten earlier each year
due to increased demand for
off-campus housing from
students.
Kristen Turner, resi-
dent services manager for
Shortbread Lofts and a for-
mer student at UNC, said she
has noticed the Chapel Hill
market gets more competitive
each year, giving apartments
no choice but to start their
process sooner.
Scientists call on Roy Cooper to protect forests

A letter signed by over 100
scientists across the world,
including professors at UNC,
urged Gov. Roy Cooper to
implement forest restoration
in his climate action plan, and
immediately address the envi-
ronmental problems caused
by the expanding wood pellet
industry.
Dogwood Alliance, a
forest-protection advocacy
group based in Asheville,
penned the letter in response
to a proposed wood pellet
mill in Hamlet. Enviva, the
worlds largest producer of
wood pellets, looks to make
this their fourth facility in
North Carolina alone.
These wood pellets would
be shipped to the United
Kingdom, where they would be

call two years in advance to
secure an apartment, Turner
said. Its not something we
like, but UNC students are
competitive in everything
they do, including housing.
Sophomore Sydney Trexler
said in order to get the apart-
ment she currently lives in at
Shortbread, she waited in line
for almost eight hours last
October.
I woke up at five in the
morning and waited in line
until about 1:30, she said. I
had to miss all of my classes
and I got the last two-bed-
room apartment available.
Turner said the increase
in demand is also due to the
recent increase in sophomores
choosing to live off-campus.
More students are seeking
apartments sooner because
they would rather spend more
money on housing with ame-
nities rather than on a meal
plan, like on-campus offers,
Turner said.
Allan Blattner, director of
UNC housing and residential
education, said he realizes
why this is the case more
burned for biofuel as an alter-
native to coal. The idea is that
burning wood can be a carbon-
neutral, renewable energy
source, as trees are one of the
most effective absorbers of car-
bon from the atmosphere. The
scientific community calls this
a false assumption.
They call it a renew-
able source because you can
give the trees a chance to
grow back and cancel out
the carbon were releasing
through burning, said Tim
Searchinger, research scholar
at Princeton University. That
is true if you let the trees fully
grow back.
The burning of wood itself
is another issue that scientists
who signed onto the letter see
in this industry.

If I could offer that on
campus, (housing) would be
full, he said. Trouble is, I
cant. We cant build some of
the amenities they have off-
campus, especially in a way
students can afford. Granted,
were not cheap in terms of
living on campus; its a static
price that you know youre
going to have a roof over your
head and meals coming in.
Cassi Pinyan, a junior at
UNC and the community
intern for Chapel Ridge apart-
ments, said she has also
noticed an influx in undergrads
choosing to live off-campus.
She said Chapel Ridge has
responded to the increased
competition in changing their
rates, but have not changed
their deadlines to increase
pressure on applicants.
We have rolling applica-
tions throughout the year,
Pinyan said. Certain floor
plans may be hard to acquire
as it gets later in the year, but
applicants can find housing
higher for wood than coal,
said Norman Christensen,
professor emeritus and for-
mer dean of the Nicholas
School of the Environment at
Duke University.
Christensen noted that
coal takes millions of years to
grow back while trees can do
so in a much shorter period of
time. However, this requires a
commitment to ensuring the
full growth of all trees that
are cut. William Schlesinger,
another professor emeri-
tus and former dean of the
Nicholas School, said this is a
difficult commitment to fulfill.

that site, where no one would
come in at 70 years and cut it

Exposure Law in 2013 to
clarify the definition of pri-
vate parts to include womens
breasts. The clarification,
known as House Bill 34, never
became a part of current law.
Several movements have
propelled the topic of womens
toplessness into the spotlight.

his way through the ranks of
the athletic department at the
University of Notre Dame.
Cunningham has leveraged his
experience at these schools to
inspire initiatives for Carolina
Athletics, as was the case for
creating the Rammys -- an
award show for Carolina
Athletics celebrating student-
athletes in a style mimicking
the Grammy Awards.
We had something similar
like that when I was at Tulsa,
Cunningham said. We had
an awards show it was a
dinner and then we had a
few of the student-athletes
that had some specific talents
and we created a show out
of it. Then when I got here
and saw all of the incredible
achievements of these stu-
dent-athletes but also all of
these other talents that they
really nice fit for us here.
Rick Steinbacher, the
senior associate athletic
director for external com-
munications, has worked
closely with Cunningham and
admires the spirit he brings to
the workplace.
Steinbacher played football
at UNC from 1990 to 1993,
and has been able to draw
parallels between his time at
the University as a student-
athlete and a professional in
the athletic department.
As a student-athlete, Ive
played under some great
coaches, Steinbacher said.
Mack Brown was the coach
when I was here. And the
thing that I really appreci-
ated about Mack Brown was
that he was grounded in some
really strong personal values
that I believed in. Thats very
similar to how Bubba leads.
Cunningham attributes
his values to those instilled in
him by his dad and mom, an
elementary school principal
and a teacher, respectively.
My parents always talked
about education being a chance
to unlock an infinite number
of opportunities, Cunningham
said. The role of college athlet-
ics, by providing scholarships
for allowing students to partici-
pate in sports, it gives us both
the opportunity to play and get
a great education.
Cunningham has made
an effort to see that UNC
student-athletes are getting
a quality education while at
UNC. Each year since 2012,
over 300 student-athletes
have made the ACC Academic
Honor Roll.
I think thats what Carolina
is, Cunningham said. Its
a high-achieving place that

CARY On Saturday, the
North Carolina mens soc-
cer team took one more step
toward a return to the College
Cup.
The Tar Heels (16-3-1, 6-1-1
ACC) advanced to their eighth
Elite Eight appearance in the
past 10 years after defeating a
pesky Southern Methodist (17-
3-1, 5-1-1 American) squad by
a score of 2-0.
The Mustangs employed
a defensive approach in the
first half, holding the Tar
Heels to just five shots while
packing the defensive side of
the field. The teams went into
halftime scoreless.
With five minutes gone in
the second half, the Tar Heels
finally got onto the score-
board. Sophomore midfielder
Jack Skahan possessed the
ball 25 yards out from the left
side of the field. He made a
quick move, then fired a laser
into the box. The ball skidded
just past forward Alan Winns
run, and snuck into the bot-
tom right corner of the goal,
giving the Tar Heels a 1-0
advantage.
I didnt see the goal,
Skahan said with a smile. I
was going for a guy in the
middle, and it got on frame
and went in. Thats normally
a cross for me.
After the goal, the momen-
tum shifted, with SMU employ-
ing a more aggressive approach
to get back into the game.
The approach was still in
effect in the 83rd minute.
Redshirt sophomore Jelani
Pieters was in the game for
less than a minute when
a nifty back-heel pass was
flicked to him by sophomore
midfielder Cam Lindley.
With Lindley standing near
midfield, Pieters streaked
behind him on an overlap run
and Lindley found his team-
mate. Pieters took the ball in
stride, sprinting down the left
side of the field. He cut into
the middle at the top of the
box and fired a low screamer
into the back of the net,
breaking the collective hearts
of the SMU faithful.
Jelani is great off the ball,
Lindley said. We know we
were trying to get behind. I
took the chance, and its one of
those risk-reward passes. If it
pays off, its going to show up
and give us results. I got lucky
and Jelani made a great run.
It was Pieters ninth goal of
the season and Lindleys 12th
assist of the year the most
by a player during head coach
Carlos Somoanos tenure.

UNC womens basketball shows team growth in blowout win

On Wednesday afternoon, the
North Carolina womens basketball
team produced its best performance
of the season in an 86-60 win over
UNC-Wilmington.
The Tar Heels (3-2) set a season-
high in assists (26) and steals (13)
and tied season-highs in made field
goals (36) and 3-pointers made (6).
Five Tar Heels contributed double-
figure scoring outputs in the blow-
out win over the Seahawks (2-2).
Senior guard Jamie Cherry led all
scorers with 21 points after shooting a
combined 1-18 in her last two contests.
Ive been in the gym trying to
get up extra shots, Cherry said.
Just to see the ball go through the
hoop gave me a lot of confidence.
The coaches told me if I was open to
keep shooting.
Cherry was aided by first-year
bigs Janelle Bailey, Jaelynn Murray
and Jocelyn Jones, who all put in
solid efforts. Bailey finished the
game with 16 points, Jones tied
a career high with 14 points and
Murray added a team-high eight
rebounds.
Every game Ive just been find-
ing something to improve on, Jones
said. Definitely learning to play
with my teammates more and I
think that helps with overall chem-
istry. So just finding where I fit with
the offense and the team and feed-
ing off each other.
Another Tar Heel who filled
up the stat sheets was sophomore
guard Taylor Koenen. After averag-
ing 6.6 points and 5.1 rebounds as a
first-year, Koenen has put up three
double-digit scoring performances
to start the season including her 12
points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists in
Wednesdays win.
I call her Larry Bird, head coach
Sylvia Hatchell said. I told her shes
our Larry Bird because shes a utility
player and does a lot of things out
there. Not flashy, but solid. And shes
in that gym and does whatever we
need her to do. Shes like a sponge
and just soaks up information. I
would love to have a teammate like
Taylor.
Perhaps the most encouraging
sign for the Tar Heels was winning
without a huge game from redshirt
junior guard Paris Kea, who finished
with a season-low 10 points, but
added a game-high eight assists.
Lots of people did some good
things, Hatchell said. We are doing
a lot of good things and we will
continue to get better, especially as
we improve with our defense and
rebounding.
The Tar Heels will need to keep
up their strong form from today, as
they look toward a tough stretch of
four games in seven days, albeit all
at home in Carmichael Arena. But
Hatchell is confident in her teams
progress.
They are a great group and
working hard, Hatchell said. I
think the future looks really good for
this group.

Junior guard Kenny Williams carried North
Carolina early, scoring 20 of its 26 points just
over nine minutes into the game.
Senior guard Joel Berry II got hot after that,
helping the offense turn a tight game into a
blowout toward the end of the first half and
throughout the second. Berry had 29 points,
including five made 3-pointers.
The 24-point victory at Stanford set the
tone for the Tar Heels to begin their West
Coast road trip, centered around the PK80
tournament.

North Carolina dispatched Portland to
begin the PK80 tournament by sticking to
what worked against Stanford.
UNC shared the ball, allowing several play-
ers to tally significant shot numbers. Among
the five Tar Heels who scored in double digits
was first-year guard Andrew Platek, who set a
career high with 12 points in 10 minutes.
And, just like against Stanford, it took
UNC until the second half to blow the game
open. But a 12-0 run to start the second frame
helped seal another 24-point road victory.

Luke Maye headlined the Tar Heels effort
against the Razorbacks, racking up career
highs in points (28) and rebounds (16).
UNC again struggled to pull away early,
but its performance from beyond the arc ulti-
mately doomed Arkansas. Maye and Kenny
Williams combined to shoot 7-10 from three,
showing that UNC still has an array of deep
threats, including Joel Berry II.
The Tar Heels scored the final 13 points
of the game to complete the blowout and
advance to the PK80 final on Sunday.

In its first loss of the season to No. 4
Michigan State, UNC shot 24.6 percent from
the field the worst in school history. The
previous worst was 25.3 percent against Wake
Forest in 1956.
North Carolina also shot 1-18 from 3-point
range and committed 16 turnovers. The
Spartans out-rebounded the Tar Heels, 51-36.
