-News releases- communications from for-profit or nonprofit companies as well as
private and governmental entities directed at members of news media
-Claim to have news value but often attempt to garner media attention for new
product, event, discovery, etc.
-Also look for news services and newsletters (less frequent than news releases)

-Can be a good way to narrow down topics
Weblogs
-Weblogs (aka blogs)- regularly updated, self-published, online journals, posts in reverse
chronological order
-Began as form of online journal, but now many newspapers, organizations and
corporations use them
-Use caution since not all professionally maintained (can be good or bad)
-Poynter Institute reports that reporters often use for stories that dont fit routine
articles, allow to publish breaking news ahead of print, can contain commentary and
opinions of author and readers in comment section

-Since becoming more popular, many entities are turning to social media to get new out

-Brainstorm, go to the library and look through books
-Dont make topic too broad, will result in superficial treatment of topic
-Though framework of these three types is useful, it is never that simple, ie. use
entertainment in persuasive presentation
-Must include the audience in statement, must be written in the infinitive, must contain
one distinct idea, must be clear and precise
-ie. Effective: To inform my audience about the new food pyramid issued
by the US Department of Agriculture (vs Ineffective: Nutrition)
-Specific purpose statement is what you expect to accomplish while thesis statement is
what you will actually say to introduce your topic and main points
-If material does not relate back to thesis, it probably does not belong in the presentation
