Refractoriness under load tests (RUL) of refractories allow the evaluation of their
deformation under raising temperature and compressive constant load. Its knowledge
is very useful to evaluate the behavior of materials in service. Four refractory silica
bricks of KN and KS brand of two different costumer used in siderurgical coke ovens,
were studied. The phase analyses was carried out by XRD and the apparent
porosities were determined based on DIN 51056 standard. RUL tests were
performed based on DIN 51064 standard, in a servo-hydraulic mechanical testing
machine Instron 8501, using an axial extensometer for high temperature. Cylindrical
specimens (50x50 mm2), obtained by cutting of the refractory bricks and machining of
flat surfaces, were tested in compression at 0,2 MPa and heating at 5C/min up to
1450C. The results were correlated with microstructural features of bricks.
