STUDENT WINNERS TO BE HONORED IN WASHINGTON, DC

The following is NASA's list of 1998 Space Science Student

Involvement Program (SSIP) competitions and winners.

Mars Scientific Experiment

Students in grades 9 -12 proposed an experiment that could be

conducted en route to or on the surface of Mars. Students were
required to follow scientific research guidelines when designing
the study. The following regional winners will compete for first
place national winner during the Symposium:

Leon Liu, Horace Greely High School, Chappaqua, NY

Justin Ward, Richard Montgomery High School, Rockville, MD
Lexi Menish, Assumption High School, Louisville, KY
Eli Alper, Trinity Prep of Florida, Winter Park, FL
Kevin Kula, Parma Senior High School, Parma, OH
Leslie Chicoine,Shawnee Mission High School, Overland Park, KS
Hubert Pham, Independence High School, San Jose, CA
Paul Williams, Eagle High School, Eagle, ID

Intergalactic Art Competition

Students in grades 3 - 12 expressed their talents in science

and art by creating a two-dimensional illustration depicting a
scene from intergalactic space and writing an essay describing the
picture. The artwork will be displayed for public viewing.

Michael Roggenthen, Hill City Elementary School, Hill City, SD

Robert Little, Saugas High School, Saugas, CA
Karen Shakespear, Laing Middle School, Mt. Pleasant, SC

Future Aircraft/Spacecraft Design Competition

Students in grades 3 - 5 worked in teams to design a

futuristic aircraft or spacecraft. The students created three
illustrations and wrote an essay describing the spacecraft.

Katie Pegg, Stacey Chia, Mai Quynh Nguyen, Candice Hansen,

James H. Cox School, Fountain Valley, CA

Mission To Planet Earth

Students in grades 6 - 8, worked in three-person teams to

create an interdisciplinary project using satellites to study the
effects of human activity on the Earth's ecosystem. They used
research methods and an understanding of technology to search for
solutions to society's ecological problems.

Ryan Burnette, Erik Garrison, Robbie Semones, Second Street

School, Frankfort, KY

Aerospace Internship Competitions

Students in grades 9 - 12 competed for a one-week internship

with their teacher/advisor at a NASA facility. Students were
chosen on the basis of a written proposal of an experiment that
could theoretically be performed at one of the facilities.
