Assignment 3

Date of submission 18th August 2015

The answers must be written in the students OWN words.
Plagiarism will NOT be tolerated.

1. A cylinder fitted with a piston has an initial volume of 0.1 m3 and contains nitrogen at 150 kPa,
25deg C. The piston is moved, compressing the nitrogen until the pressure is 1 MPa and the
temperature is 150 C. During this compression process heat is transferred from the nitrogen,
and the work done on the nitrogen is 20 KJ. Determine the amount of this heat transfer.
2. Determine the energy transport rate for the system shown in Fig. 1 where 1 BTU= 1055.055
joules.

3. Determine the mechanical moving boundary work produced in this process:

(a) A gas in a cylinder is held at constant pressure 2.30105 N/m2 cooled and compressed
from 1.70 m3 to 1.20 m3 . Internal energy decreases by 1.40 105 J.
(b) A sealed, rigid tank contains air at 0.100 MPa and 20.0deg C. The tank is then heated
until the pressure in the tank reaches 0.800 MPa.
4. The rate of heat transfer between a certain electric motor and its surroundings varies with
time as,
dQ
= 0.2[1 e(0.05)t ]
dt
where t is in seconds. The shaft of the motor rotates at a constant speed of = 100rad/s
(about 955 RPM) and applies a constant torque of 18 N-m to an external load. The motor
draws a constant electric power input equal to 2.0 kW. Find the change in energy:

1
(a) At any time,t
(b) At steady state

5. Air is contained in a vertical piston cylinder assembly fitted with an electrical resistor. The
atmosphere exerts a pressure of 1 bar on the top of the piston, which has a mass of 45 kg
and a face area of .09 m2 . Electric current passes through the resistor, and the volume of
the air slowly increases by 0.045 m3 while its pressure remains constant. The mass of the
air is 0.27 kg, and its specific internal energy increases by 42 kJ/kg. The air and piston are
at rest initially and finally. The piston cylinder material is a ceramic composite and thus a
good insulator. Friction between the piston and cylinder wall can be ignored, and the local
acceleration of gravity is g=9.81 m/s2 . Determine the heat transfer from the resistor to the
air, in kJ, for a system consisting of the air alone.
