Case Studies
Case Ferrum picricum
This is a man aged 64 who came to see me in 2003. One year ago, he went to his Doctor for a
prostate check up, then, six months later found that there was hardening of prostate. The Doctor
put him on a drug to dilate the urethra so that he did not have to get up three times a night to
relief himself. The drug he is on now cause stiffness all over especially the limbs and the back. The
last straw that pushed him to seek alternative treatment was when his Doctor suggested that he
takes another drug to combat the side effect of stiffness.
He says that he has been married for forty-four years, now retired but still reasonably active. He
worked hard, and never drank or smoked excessively. His family is farming people from England.
At the present, he is in the process of putting up a fence though the knees, shoulders and back all
stiff from the drugs. I still shear a few sheep and am feeling really stiff and my groin is painful.
As soon as I came off these drugs, the stiffness was gone, but then, it comes back as soon as I
start taking these again.
He has been retired for three years, enjoys the lifestyle they have now. He is a kind of even
tempered man, pretty gregarious, organised and disciplined, and disagreeable things do not really
worry him much. He loves tomatoes and pride on his good management of his shop.
Prescription: Ferrum-picricum 30C, 6 doses.
Analysis: This man has a Ferrum personality; strong work ethics, always hard working, persevering
and forceful (try to build a fence even though he has little mobility), nothing bothers him much
(Case 1 does not hold grudges). The question here is which Ferrum? I looked up the repertory
under Prostate gland general, Ferrum-pic was the only Ferrum present. I gave him the remedy
on the spot, he felt much less stiff within five minutes and was able to move with ease. He did not
need a follow up. End of case.
Up-date (12/2005): I telephoned to enquire about his health prior to this publication. He reported
that he was well ever since and feeling healthy. No more problems.

Hafnium in Sleeplessness
by Pavol Tibensky

Case of Hafnium

A 50 year old man visited my office for sleeplessness. He is co - manager of chemical factory. He
refused repeatedly to admit any problems in his factory and his family. He admits only problems
during the start of his managerial post, those problems he considered solved. He works a lot, many
times more than 16 hours daily. He is very responsive, when is problem in factory, he leaves his
home and returns to the job. He is quite irritable, but mostly at home. He is very friendly, very
kind, communicative person. He smiles almost all the time during interview. He loves music, he
plays many instruments, with his band plays weddings and so on. He loves cars, he is fanatic to
the repairing of cars. He would like to do this in the future. His colleague manager is less
responsible, likes new cars and he is proud he is somebody. Contrary, my patient is friendly to his
employees, he does not want to harm them, he is considered more their colleague than their boss.
He is a gourmand, he likes fishes, his appetite is increased in the evening after work.
His physical complaints: inflammation of the sinuses with greenish discharge from his nose, pain of
ribs/Tietze syndroma/, and frequent urination due to prostate gland inflammation.
Description of his sleeplessness: "I am not able to fall asleep in the evening. I discovered when I
go to bed at 11 p. m., sleep is impossible. When I go to bed every day one hour later, I sleep one
hour more." He slept from midnight to 2 oclock, from 1 to four and from two oclock to 6 oclock.
He talked about this discovery smiling and very excited. I considered this; he is a boaster, he is
haughty, he is ambitious, but I was not right. Nux vomica and Aurum did not help.
I was not able to find a remedy for him without help from outside. His wife was a help to me: he
has a problem in his job. He does not admit it, but he wants to purchase a car for their company,
he will use this car for his job and private use. This is big problem because his colleague manager
has a very expensive car and he wants a similar one. But he considers; this is not good for the
eyes of their employees to purchase an expensive car. He is not able to decide the right solution,
he wants to be the boss and does not want to be criticized by his employees for this.
Wife of his friend: "My husband does not like him for this feature; when my husband says
something, he says the contrary, this could be right, but I think it is like this etc etc. He says this
smiling, it looks haughty."

After this information the remedy was more clear: Jan Scholtens description of the remedy
Hafnium:

A half hearted director:

They are afraid of getting too arrogant, that is why they try to remain on equal footing with their
employees. They may get stuck in this half way position, on the one hand being equal to their
employees, and on the other hand knowing they are higher up on the ladder. They can only assert
their authority in a half hearted manner, they don't take full responsibility and they don't radiate
enough self confidence to be taken seriously by their minors.

Then I remembered features of stage four as an official start of a job, art, discovery etc. His
description of sleeplessness was not boasting, but he was excited by the joy of his discovery of
beginning to understand his sleeplessness.

Remedy given: Hafnium 1M

He slept much better after the remedy, but he admits only slight amelioration. This information is
from his wife: "He considers selling his part of company and changing his job." He used the remedy
4 times during one year.

Still feeling the distress of childhood: a case of Staphysagria

by Jayesh Shah, Devang Shah

A seventy-year-old gentleman came to us on 11 April, 2012. His main concern was urinary
incontinence, which had begun after an operation to address prostate enlargement. He was also
concerned because, although he was on allopathic medication for type 2 Diabetes, his sugar levels
were widely fluctuating. He wanted help in these matters and in generally ensuring a healthy
future.

The patient appeared to be a sensitive, gentle person. He spoke in a mild, gentle manner, yet also
with a kind of dignity. He related to us that he felt hurt that the surgeon had not warned him about
potential post-operative side effects, including urinary incontinence and hindrance in his sexual life
(this interest in sexuality stood out as somewhat peculiar).

He is living with his second wife at present. His first marriage ended in divorce, after which he
remained single and followed a spiritual path for nine years.

He described himself as cool and calm, but said that he gets angry at injustice and dishonesty. He
enjoys running his own business, which for him is a creative outlet. He is popular with his friends,
and especially likes to be appreciated for his work.
He worries a lot. He says that he often dwells on past memories of his childhood with his father.
His father was a very forceful, strict person. He was terrified of his fathers angry reprimands. His
father disapproved of spending money, which was a huge source of stress. He once witnessed his
father hit his older brother for spending too much money and this frightened him a great deal. He
was so afraid of his fathers disapproval that he suppressed his dream to pursue a career in the
sport of badminton, although he was a champion at it. Instead, he pursued a degree in commerce,
following his fathers wishes.

His fathers dictates often caused the patient embarrassment in public. For instance, on one
occasion his father humiliated him by forcing him to wear short pants in front of his colleagues. He
says that his father was like a tyrant.

His mother provided all the love and care. He describes her as a gentle and loving soul, very
affectionate by nature, a strong contrast to his difficult father. During the interview, he talked at
great length about the differing natures of his two parents.

The patient has a strong fear of hospitals, and is very sensitive to others suffering.

As a child, he was emotionally sensitive in general. When playing with his cousins, he could not
bear even a small joke at his expense. He used to weep when he lost a game or when he was
teased. He was also highly claustrophobic. Once, there was an incident on an airplane, which was
about to take off. He became so panicked that the crew was forced to reopen the plane to let him
off. At the time, he was desperate to be out in the open. He also had anxiety in crowded places.

He remembered two peculiar dreams. Once, he dreamt that he was standing on a beach with a wall
behind him, when a big wave washed over him. His feeling in the dream was an acute fear of
dying, which caused him to wake with a start. In the second dream, he was sleeping in a room with
his five brothers, and on waking he discovered that all of them were dead and he was the only one
alive. When asked about his feeling in the dream, he said that it struck him as very strange.

Analysis

The most striking and stressed aspect of this case was the patients great distress in childhood due
to his extremely strict father. He was very mild and could not bear his fathers harshness. For
example, his father did not like to spend money and would reprimand his children for that. The
patient spent a lot of time talking about how his father was a dictator and how his mother was very
soft and gentle.

Hearing a seventy-year-old man talking at great length in this way, we understood that this must
be his main issue. The memories of childhood trauma at the hands of his father are still fresh in his
mind! He spent much more time talking about that than about his main complaint, which speaks
about his sensitivity to this childhood situation. We see especially his sensitivity to all of the harsh
reprimands. Trying to connect his fear and claustrophobia with his life situation as a child, it was
interesting to see that this fear was probably similar to the fear experienced in the presence of the
strict father. Often the client does not clearly connect his deepest feelings in a situation directly.
We can then understand them through fears, dreams, interests and hobbies. There are multiple
situations and windows through which one can understand the level of experience.

As he grew, he became sensitive to injustice in the world. He stands up against injustice when he
encounters it.

Along with his sensitive and gentle nature, we have observed a kind of dignity about him. So, we
are dealing with a person who is very dignified and sensitive to hurts.

He said that he is creative in his business, popular among his friends, and likes to feel appreciated.
So, we see the polarities of criticism and appreciation. Now, we know we need a remedy that has
these aspects of criticism and appreciation, and also covers his post-operative ailments.

The following rubrics (shown in the repertorization graph) were derived from the characteristic
symptoms of the case.

Repertorisation graph

On consulting Phataks Materia Medica[1], we find, for Staphysagria, the following descriptions:

Nervous affections with trembling is a marked feature of this remedy. It has irregular sexual
appetite and a tendency to masturbation (this shows the sexual mindedness of Staphysagria).

Acts on URINARY ORGANS; fibrous tissue; Morbidly sensitive; the least word that seems
wrong hurts her very much;
Sphincters; lacerated and stretched. LACERATED TISSUE; perineum etc. Stitching pains,
remaining after operations. Ill effects of anger and insults; reserved; anger, injury, falls;
clean cut wounds; operations; sexual excess;

(Post operative injury to the sphincter was the main complain of this patient.)

Mind: imagines insults. Great indignation about the things done by others or by himself;
grieves about the consequences.

Ailments from reserved displeasure. Very sensitive to what others say about her. Ill
effects after scolding or punishment in children.

Prescription: Staphysagria LM3

Comments on the potency

The patient has chronic progressive diabetes. We can see that it is progressing because his
fluctuating blood sugar is no longer controlled by his allopathic medications and there is currently a
danger to vital organs, such as kidney, eyes, nerves and heart. Considering this chronic
progressive aspect of his pathology, an LM potency, allowing for repeated dosing, was selected. He
also experienced most of his complaints at level 1, 2 or 3. Even when relating his fathers story, he
did not really emote during the consultation. There was the sense of remaining in control, which is
typical for Staphysagria. Furthermore, his main complaint was at the local level. Thus, LM3 felt like
a safe bet to start with, keeping the option of going higher if needed.

Follow-up, 2/11/12: the patient responded immediately to the remedy. His incontinence
improved within the first month of treatment. After three months, the incontinence was around
80% better, and after six months, he estimated that it was 95% better. There is no more
fluctuation of his blood sugar levels; they have stabilized with the standard dose of allopathic
medication that he had been on and can now maintain. His most recent glycosylated hemoglobin
was 7.6; it was 8 before starting homoeopathic treatment. His fasting sugar level has reduced from
170 to 120.

Mentally, he says he feels a sense of calmness and a kind of acceptance toward the stress of life.
He can now overcome small upsets promptly, which was not previously the case.

He told us about a difference of opinion with his daughter related to work, which he had not
mentioned in the first interview. He says: Now, I have understood it and I am okay with it. This is
very a positive and healing change in him. The ability to accept things as they are has made him
much calmer. He says that he is now keen not to impose his perceptions of reality on his daughter.
Now, he can live with the fact that they have differing views.

So, we see that the patient got better at the physical level, in his pathology, and also at the mental
and emotional level, as now the stress of life does not bother him and he is able to accept things as
they are. This is the beauty of homoeopathy - it does not just cure a physical problem, but also
returns the patient to the sense of ease and well-being that comes with cure at deeper levels. This
profound holistic effect makes this science one of the best healing methodologies in the field of
health care.

Case management

After three months on Staphysagria LM3, the potency was shifted to LM4, as there were still
fluctuations in the patients blood sugar levels. After stepping up the potency, the problem
disappeared.

Comments

The sensation of things narrowing in on him, and thus troubling him when in a crowd, is not known
to be a very prominent aspect of Staphysagria, and this has been clinically observed to get better
with the remedy.

The second aspect which came through in his nature was that he was a worrying person - even
small things would cause him a great deal of worry, about himself, disease, money, relations,
everything. This is not normally associated with Staphysagria. So, I asked myself whether this
deeply worrying nature is a less well-known aspect of the remedy. Upon further thought, however,
I saw that the underlying factor was not the worry itself but the type of thing that he was worried
about. For instance, when he worried about his father, the worry was that he would be shouted at
or scolded. When he worried about money, again, this was fear of his fathers disapproval, and his
worry about having to go into the hospital was really due to his deep sensitivity to observing
suffering. So, what we are really seeing here is his deep sensitivity, which is plant kingdom, and
the specific sensitivity to harshness, scolding and disapproval which is Ranunculaceae.

Another major aspect of the case was seen in his dreams, in which something huge is coming and
he is taken over by that. In one case, it was the sea that was coming over him, and in another
dream it was a calamity, finding that all his brothers were dead. Neither of these was a recurrent
dream; they were elicited after persistent questioning and hence, carried less weight in the
analysis. However, from this case we can learn that the feeling of eminent danger or loss of life
must be a significant aspect of Staphysagria, because the patient has done so well on this remedy.
Fear of disease and dying is an important aspect of the Ranunculaceae family, as we can see in
Aconite. Many Staphysagria cases may have fear of death. A fear of being pursued, as if some
danger is coming from behind, such as the delusion that someone is behind them, is similar to the
idea of fear of his own shadow. This danger from behind has been clinically confirmed in a couple
of cases that I have seen.
Since the patient has done so well on Staphysagria, the clinical suggestions that come up for this
remedy from this case are: a brooding type of person, with a lot of anxiety about death and lot of
fear of danger coming from behind and taking him over.

_Homeopathic_Perspective_on_Mens_Health_Pro.html

Prostate Problems
The walnut-size prostate is located at the floor of the pelvis behind the base of the penis. During
ejaculation the prostate contributes a milky alkaline fluid to the semen to enhance the fertility of
the sperm. Several maladies involving the prostate are fairly common in men, including prostatitis
(prostate infections), benign prostatic hypertrophy (prostate enlargement), and prostate cancer.
Benign prostatic hypertrophy
The prostate grows larger with age. Once a man reaches middle age, problems with urinating
often result as swelling of the prostate gland constricts the urinary passage. This is called
prostatic hypertrophy. There may be trouble getting the urinary stream started, or the stream may
be weak or interrupted. Frequent urging to urinate, together with passing of only small amounts,
is also common. These symptoms should be evaluated medically. Constitutional homeopathic
treatment can be helpful during the early stage of prostatic hypertrophy. Conventional treatments
include various recently-introduced medicines as well as surgical procedures.
Prostate Cancer
The treatment of cancer is beyond the scope of this book, but we do have a few words of advice:
Since prostate cancer is one of the most common malignancies in men, regular contact with your
doctor after the age of forty is wise, even if you have no symptoms. Screening tests for cancer
include physical exam of the prostate and a blood test, the prostate specific antigen (PSA).
Although the value of screening for prostate cancer is controversial (the benefits of treating
cancer detected by screening tests arent clear) your practitioner will have some
recommendations and can keep you informed of medical progress in this area. Prostate cancer is
often very slow-growing and your doctor may recommend no specific treatment. Constitutional
homeopathic care would be appropriate under these circumstances.
Prostatitis
Because the urethra passes through the prostate on its way from the bladder, bacteria can travel
through the urethra to settle in the prostate. The prostate gland is susceptible to both acute
infection and to chronic infection or inflammation. An acute infection can cause severe pain and
tenderness in the region of the prostate, sometimes extending up into the genitals, pelvis, or
back. Other symptoms can include increased urge to urinate, burning during urination, difficulty
starting urination, discharge from the penis, and general symptoms such as fever and weakness.
Chronic inflammation of the prostate can develop after an acute infection or on its own.
Symptoms are similar to but milder than those of acute infection and tend to come and go over
long periods. Vague aching in the region of the prostate, dribbling of urine, trouble starting or
maintaining a forceful stream of urine, and discharge of prostatic fluid from the penis after a bowel
movement, for instance, are common symptoms. Often it is impossible to identify the bacteria
involved in chronic prostatitis; it may well be a self-perpetuating problem that persists even after
infecting bacteria have been eliminated.
General Home Care
Home treatment for acute prostatitis includes drinking plenty of fluids, urinating frequently to help
wash out the infecting bacteria, getting rest, eating a simple, nutritious diet, and avoiding stress.
Chronic prostatitis is difficult to heal completely. Still, the measures used for acute prostatitis can
be helpful. In addition, hot sitz baths may bring some relief. You can also try Kegel exercises as
a mild form of self-massage to express excess fluid from the prostate and thereby reduce
symptoms: Firmly tighten the muscles you would use to interrupt the flow of urine, repeating 50 to
100 times per day. Some urologists advise their patients to ejaculate regularly to expel some of
the prostatic fluid and reduce pressure in the gland.
Homeopathic Medicines
During either acute or chronic prostatitis, homeopathic care can complement conventional
medical treatment. In acute cases, you can use homeopathic medicines while you take antibiotics
to speed the healing process. If symptoms persist after antibiotic treatment, or in chronic cases
that have developed with no acute onset, you may try homeopathy instead of antibiotics (after
seeing a health practitioner to rule out dangerous infections such as gonorrhea or Chlamydia).
We recommend you see a professional homeopath if one is available, but if not, go ahead and try
homeopathy at home.
Unfortunately for the homeopath, the typical case of prostatic trouble gives rise to few
distinguishing symptoms that help in remedy selection. If no remedy stands out as a good match
for the affected persons symptoms, you can try the ones listed below one at a time.
Casetaking Questions for Prostatitis
Character of the symptoms:
What is the character of the pain or discomfortis it an ache, a sensation of pressure, or sharp pain like a
needle?
Modalities:
How is the pain affected by sitting, standing, walking, and urinating?
Other symptoms:
Describe the color and consistency of any discharge from the penis. Is there pain in the urethra or
bladder?
Remedy Summary for Prostatitis Give the medicine: During acute symptoms, one dose two
times a day for up to five days, less frequently as the symptoms improve. For chronic cases, one
dose of the 30th potency per day for five days, or a low potency twice daily for up to two weeks.
When to try another medicine: In acute cases, if there is no improvement after 36-48 hours. In
chronic cases, if the symptoms havent improved within 10-14 days.

Essentials
Pain in the prostate after urination; or
The general symptoms of Pulsatilla are present (see the materia medica section)
Confirmatory symptoms
Sharp pains or spasms in prostate area extending into the bladder and pelvis
Thick, bland discharge from the penis

Chimaphilla umbellato
Essentials
Soreness in the region of the gland is worse with pressure, especially during sitting Confirmatory
symptoms
Sensation of sitting on a ball or of painful swelling.
Discharge of mucus from the penis or the presence of stringy mucus in the urine
Kali bichromium
Essentials
Prostate pain aggravated by walking; must stand still for relief
Confirmatory symptoms
Needlelike pain or drawing pains extending from the prostate into the penis
Burning in the urethra after urination
Discharge of very thick, sticky, or stringy material from the penis

Causticum
Essentials
Pressure and pulsations in the prostate with pain extending into the urethra and bladder after a few
drops of urine have passed.

Sabal serrulata
Essentials
Indicated during chronic prostatic enlargement with difficult urination; there may be burning during
urination as well.

Lycopodium
Essentials
Pressure in the prostate aggravated during and after urination
Confirmatory symptoms
Needle-like pains in the bladder and anus
Pulsatilla is a good medicine for the man who experiences aggravation of pain in the prostate
after urination. There may be sharp pains or spasms in the region of the prostate that extend into
the bladder and pelvis. A thick, bland discharge from the penis may be present. Men who show
strong general symptoms of this medicine can be given Pulsatilla even when the specific
symptoms dont clearly confirm it.
Chimaphilla umbellato is more difficult to find - even at some homeopathic pharmacies - than
most of the medicines covered here, but it is well indicated for many men with prostatitis.
Soreness in the region of the gland is worse with pressure, especially during sitting. There may
be a sensation of sitting on a ball or simply of painful swelling. A discharge of mucus from the
penis or the presence of stringy mucus in the urine may be noted.
The Kali bichromium patient's prostate pain is worsened by walking, and he must stand still for
relief. The pain may be needle-like or there may be drawing pains extending from the prostate
into the penis. There may be burning in the urethra after urination. A discharge of particularly
thick, sticky, or stringy material may be found at the urethral opening.
With Causticum there are pressure and pulsations in the prostate with pain extending into the
urethra and bladder after a few drops of urine have passed. In contrast, Lycopodium covers
pressure in the gland that is worse during and after urination. Needle-like pains in the bladder and
anus especially indicate this medicine.
Sabal serrulata has also been found effective during prostatic problems. However, its indications
are fairly general: enlargement of the prostate with difficulty passing urine or burning while
urinating.
Cases uit enceclopedie
1. Case E.E.
A machinist, aged forty-two years, has the following symptoms :

Sleepy, weary, exhausted condition.

Dull, heavy pain in region of left kidney, always except when lying down; he often awakes
lying upon the back with this pain, which is relieved by pressure, or rubbing the part. The
pain sometimes darts downward into the thigh.
Constant aching in the bladder, with stitches into the urethra; or more frequently downward
toward or to the knees.
Pricking sensation in the prostatic portion of the urethra.
Burning micturition, sometimes almost involuntary; urine has specific gravity 1018,
strongly acid, no albumen, sugar, or mucus, but it is loaded with bile.
Itching and moisture of left side of scrotum and about the anus; better when the back is
worse, and vice versa.

Pain from kidney to thigh is the characteristic symptom and this belongs only to Berberis vulgaris.
This remedy covers all the rest.

Berberis vulgaris 12 B. and T., once in three hours, four days.

He was relieved soon and continued well for six months, when a return of symptoms required :

Berberis vulgaris 30 B. and T., for four days as before.

This cured the eczema as well as the urinary distress.

(This case was treated in 1885 before the high potencies were used. The cure shows that the
selection of the remedy is the most essential point in prescribing. The selection of potency, although
of great importance, is secondary.)

2. Geukens, Homeopathic practice, prostatitis, Sulphur

MAN, 29 YEARS OLD

Doctor: It concerns a 29 year old man who has recidivistic inflammation of the prostate. The
problems arose three years ago. At that time he had an inflammation of the right testicle. A part of it
has been taken away and a year later he had complaints with urinating.

He has already been in homoeopathic treatment. They could not find the remedy, so that he had to
take antibiotics and had to be operated on. Now, he comes to us

Doctor: From time to time he couldn't urinate at all and then they did - how do they call it - a lavage
of the prostate.
A: He has been treated in a homoeopathic centre.

Doctor: That's right. They had to give it up. Last time he got antibiotics, because he had strong
complaints and also fever. After the antibiotic cure he had rather quickly a relapse. When he was
taking antibiotics he already called here, but we advised him to go on with the cure for a little while.
Then, he got a relapse. On Monday, he came with the same complaints: tension in the abdomen, a
kind of tickling, numbness between his behind and the scrotum, so at his perineum. He also had the
feeling as if the penis was stiff, although it was supple. He woke up at 4.00 o'clock at night and could
only urinate in drops. Afterwards he had the feeling as if the bladder was pulling together. In the
morning he had pain everywhere, the limbs, the occiput. He says: "As if I have carried a heavy weight
the whole night." On Tuesday he slept the whole day. Then, he came with the following symptoms to
the consultation: urinating in drops, feeling as if the stool had to come from behind a corner while
having stool.

A: We have already seen you before. I said, because you just took antibiotics, that we will only treat
you when the complaints are there again.

He was already here a few weeks ago and he wanted to be treated, but at that time I did not do an
anamnesis of him because all the symptoms have been suppressed by the medicines. I said, he
should wait and come back when the symptoms are there again

Doctor: In the urine there were white flocks, the colour was dark brown, at the end of urinating
yellow green mucus, this could also been seen in the pants. He had the feeling of having fever, but he
didn't take the temperature. These were the complaints.

Can you decide for a remedy with this information

If you repertorize the symptom until now there are a lot of remedies to be considered. Only on
account of local symptoms of the prostatitis it is impossible to find a remedy

He is a young man and if he would like to travel and would have been in eastern lands where he
would have enjoyed life you could have thought about Medorrhinum, but he is just an ordinary man
and because the local symptoms do not help us at all I have to see what kind of character he has

A: All right, further.

Doctor: Anamnesis (Of October, 7, 1987)

A warm-blooded man. He sleeps on the right side or on his back. At night he dreams, not often, but if
he dreams it "has sense" as he says himself. "I dream of things that come true afterwards."

He dreams of things that have not happened yet, they happen later. There is a special rubric. "Sleep,
dreams, events not yet taken place" (p. 1239; General p. 1023). There are two remedies: Manganum
and Sulphur

Do you know in which disease Manganum is an important remedy? In M. Parkinson. They walk
backwards and speak on the same level, with a monotonic voice

Manganum is also an important remedy in tooth problems. Most fillings contain Manganum and this
can cause tooth-ache
Doctor: He did not have fear of height, nor other anxieties. On the sexual level he was very active. If
it depends on him he could have sexual intercourse every day. Concerning his character, he is
someone who makes a lot of plans, everything at once. You will hear it when he tells it. His desire is
highly seasoned, very highly seasoned. He also likes meat with fat and very much ice-cream. He is
very thirsty and drinks in great draughts. He prefers drinks from the refrigerator. A: We will see the
reaction. I have supervised the case. When did he get the remedy? Doctor: He took it the same day.
That was on October, 7, 1987. (Patient comes in)

I gave him one tablet of a remedy in 50M potency and you will see how his reaction was In this case
there were not so many symptoms, only a few. One key-note was the dreams of events not yet taken
place. Then, we know that he is a warm-blooded man and that he likes highly seasoned food. There
were no clear other symptoms, but from his character he could be a man of one certain remedy: he
does not work, he has an unemployment benefit, he has three children and does not work, he makes
a lot of plans. He does a lot, but only when he likes to..

A: Your main problem was difficulties with urinating. P: Yes, and before inflammation of the
testicles. A: It concerns a chronic inflammation. You have been operated on on the epididymis. P:
Yes, they took a part away. It has been good for one year and then I got a very severe inflammation
of the prostate. Then, I have been treated homoeopathically, but it didn't help. Then they did some
lavages and I had to take antibiotics. Again in the hospital, because I couldn't urinate at all. They did
lavages. It was good for one year. A: Without antibiotics? P: Yes, without antibiotics. I only had to
take antibiotics for one month, after I was dismissed from the hospital. I stopped them and about
one year later it returned again. A: Did you have complaints the whole year? Could you urinate well?
P: Yes. The problem came back after one year. Again, I had difficulties with urinating. It always
appears suddenly. It doesn't start slowly. A: Has is disappeared every time after the operation? P: No.
A: We have seen you here together and you had a remedy melted under your tongue. But I forgot to
tell you that you dreamt of things that haven't happened yet. P: Yes. A: We already told the rest. The
dreams come true afterwards? P: Yes. A: You took the remedy. Tell me what happened. You had
difficulties in urinating. P: Yes. It was all right, but there was a kind of tickling feeling; also after
urinating. A: It was like an old man, in drops. P: Yes. I could sit for five minutes on the toilet until I had
finished.

When I was studying a specialist for kidney and urinary disease said that the typical way of standing
of a prostate patient is with his hands on shoulder height pressing against the wall. I will never forget
how he showed us at that time, but I only understand it now. At that time we theorized, we said that
he was standing like this, otherwise he would urinate on his knees or feet, or by pushing against the
wall so that he could make the necessary pressure. But these are only theories Which is the remedy
that urinates in this way? It is a specific prostate remedy. Chimaphila. Chimaphila is a very important
remedy and the description in Boericke is very beautifully

P: I took the remedy. The next day I still had difficulties in urinating, but it was much better. I didn't
have tickling anymore. Then, next morning I had a dream, a seminal emission. A: In your sleep? P:
Yes. I didn't notice anything of it. I woke up and it was wet. On the toilet I saw that it was involuntary
seminal discharge. A: Was it much? P: Yes. A: This is to be considered as an exception. P: It was
unusual much. I never had this so much. Then I washed myself and then it went better while
urinating. I could again urinate in a ray. A: With pressure? P: There was not so much pressure, but it
came out. A few days later I felt that there was pressure again. I have caught my urine for one week
to see if there were still flocks in it, to see whether it was all right. I felt very well. A: Now, you can
urinate very well? P: Yes, there is again pressure. I can also hold my urine for one week, while
previously I had to let it run. A: Now you can try to write your name in the snow, or to urinate a fly
dead. P: After the operation it was already better, but there was no pressure behind it. A: Be happy
that your name does not have an "i", because that is the most difficult thing. But there was a second
symptom, the feeling as if the stool came behind a corner, probably because of the swelling of the
prostate. How is it now? P: I can have stool without difficulties. I don't have any complaints, that
feeling is gone. A: All right. You had only one tablet in 50M potency. P: Yes.

I don't know which remedy he had until today, but it would be very important to know if he has had
Sulphur, maybe in a low potency If you can not cure a patient do not blame Homoeopathy, but blame
yourself. There are exceptions, incurable patients, but mostly when we have to do with
inflammations it must be easy, because the fact that you are producing means that there is
resistance During the aggravation there was a very strong discharge in the night, a kind of seminal
emission, and afterwards everything was better

Question: "What would have happened if you would have given Sulphur immediately after the
antibiotics? A: I don't know, but you just can not treat if there are no symptoms Question: "But you
know that he had a kind of prostatitis. A: No, previously he had a kind of prostatitis that has been
suppressed by the antibiotics and the operation. As long as there are no symptoms I do not like to
give a remedy. If you, for example, treat a migraine and you give the remedy in the pain free period,
you might get an attack of migraine. I always tell the patients to wait until they have their migraine
and then to take the remedy. If you give the remedy in between the attacks, the reaction can be
confused

Question: "Should the remedy be given at the beginning of the migraine or...? A: No, at the height.
The moment of the most intensive symptomatology is the best moment to give the remedy, then you
see the best reaction. If you give the remedy in the pain free period you are producing pain, namely
first the aggravation and then there is an improvement Also when you are treating cancers you
should try to get the symptoms of the past, so that you can find the constitutional remedies. The
whole picture is important and not only the totality at a certain point, but also the totality in time.
So, you can, for example, see if previous symptoms have been suppressed and maybe you can find a
remedy that covers all the symptoms, also those of the past

3. Geukens A. prostaatcarcinoom
Medorrhinum Man, 40 years old A: Your problem is an adeno carcinoma of the prostate, dysuria,
pollakiuria and all the symptoms which belong to this problem. You were in treatment with a
colleague and in spite of the homeopathic treatment they had to insert a catheter, this means that
the urine is carried off by a tube. P: Yes. A: I don't like this at all. You have an enlarged prostate and
therefore you have difficulties in urinating. There is even retention of the urine. You can't urinate at
all, can you? P: No, almost nothing. I tried it yesterday. I closed the tube and I waited for two hours. I
could urinate very little and had very much pain. A: According to me this cannot occur just like that.
Therefore I asked you whether you had difficulties urinating in the past. You answered that you had
problems since you were a child. Can you tell me something about this? This is something which we
often forget to ask, namely, "When did it start?" Every patient is a thick book until we recognize the
remedy. Often the problem starts at a certain moment, even an inflammation of the ear. The patient
comes and says that he suffers from an inflammation of the ear. You ask for the modalities, he tells
you that it is worse at night and so on and then you give the remedy. If you ask him when it started
the patient says that it started after the death of his mother-in-law. This changes everything, no
matter which modalities he has. The causation is always very important. P: I was rather old and I was
still wetting the bed. A: You told me that you wet the bed even when you were 14 years old. P: Yes.
At home there was quite a lot of fuss about this. If you are older the parents don't like this bed-
wetting. But in fact I could do very little about this. (The patient starts crying.) If you are not detached
enough at this point you are easily absorbed by this story. He says that he was wetting the bed as a
child, his parents punished him and so on. As a homeopath you must take one step backward and ask
yourself, "What kind of symptom does he give me at this moment, what can I observe in this
patient?" Everybody has a heart, but when you sympathize with the patient and get involved in his
story emotionally you are not objective anymore and you can't recognize the symptom or take it into
consideration. A: Open up your heart and tell me what you have on your mind. First, let's stick to
your childhood. I also asked you whether you are a sensitive person. Can you tell me again? P: (Is
swallowing, can hardly talk because of his tears) There were 9 children at home and in the religious
education the life story of Jesus affected me most. A: What affected you? P: The life of Jesus Christ. I
could not bear that the teacher paid more attention to the rich children than to the poor. A: You felt
disadvantaged? P: Yes. A: Did you develop an aversion to religion? P: Yes. A: An aversion to
everything which has to do with religion? P: Yes. A: As a child did you wet the bed regularly? P: Yes,
regularly. A: Were there periods you didn't wet the bed? P: Very seldom. A: Do you remember if you
often had toothache as a child? P: No. If you hear this story, the bed-wetting, the punishment, the
fact that he reacts to this in a very sensitive way, that the teacher treats rich children differently than
the poor, of which remedy does this remind you? Audience: Causticum. A : Yes, Causticum and
which remedy is complementary to Causticum? Staphisagria. He is a very sensitive man and
Staphisagria is a remedy in which enuresis is very strong. Therefore I asked him about the tooth
inflammations. Staphisagria is not in the rubric on page 430: TEETH, abscess of roots But it is a
capital addition. On which side is the inflammation of Staphisagria? The swelling of the cheek is on
which side? Is it the upper or the lower cheek? The tooth inflammations of Staphisagria are on the
right lower side. It is a very strong, hard, long-standing swelling of the right lower cheek. He never
had this. This is a negative symptom. A: Did you have teeth extracted? P: Yes, four. This was between
the age of 17 and 20 years old, not since. A: You were a child among many other children. I also treat
your brother. You felt disadvantaged, didn't you? P: Actually, I wouldn't say "disadvantaged". I had
the feeling that the priests really didn't mean what they pretend. The priests, the nuns they taught us
something what they didn't live themselves. They didn't do what they taught us to do. They gave
preference to rich children. We were always pushed to the background and this raised a kind of hate
towards the teachers who are still in service. Maybe it is a kind of aversion, actually I can't really say
it is hate. Which rubric can we take for this symptom? These are ailments from mortification,
because they were suppressing him. Staphisagria is capital. But the question is whether it really
started after mortification. Even before he was wetting the bed, before he was 14 years old, in a
certain way he was ill. This is a very dangerous point, "Is the causation for his disease really
mortification or is this a constitutional problem?" We don't know. I looked at the rubric on page 68:
MIND, mortification, ailments after Staphisagria is capital. A: You were religious. As a child did you
like to go to church? P: Yes, my parents also went to church, but we didn't get a religious education
at home. A: What do you mean "religious"? P: I mean the way the Catholic Church taught us. A: What
kind of feelings did you have as a child? Was it more a feeling of injustice or was it really a religious
feeling which you already had inside as a child? P: I think it was a religious feeling. It has to be a
remedy which is sensitive to injustice - we could think of Causticum - which is also religious. Even as a
child he was religious in a certain way. Or was he? What do you think about this? Can you take this
rubric? I took the rubric on page 71: MIND, religious affections It is a rather big rubric. Staphisagria is
not there and Causticum is only one. A: Did you also pray as a child? P: I can't remember. A: Did you
like flowers as a child? P: No. Why this question? Because we know of Staphisagria that these
children pick flowers and give them to their mother. A: You never liked flowers? P: I'm not so
enthusiastic about flowers as my wife, for example. Before the only thing I did was work. A: This was
your goal? P: Yes, and it was also my relaxation. A: You always want to work? P: Yes. I never read
before the age of 23. I was not interested. But since then I read a lot. I read regularly. When I don't
work I read. A: How did your parents react to the bed-wetting? P: They were unfavorably disposed
towards this. They had a lot of work with it. Therefore I was often angry and got spanked. A: Did you
often get a beating? P: Not so often, but enough. I can't say that I suffered a lot from this, I suffered
more from the humiliation. A: What do you mean? P: What my brothers did and so on. A: You
suffered more from the humiliation? P: Yes. Which symptom can you observe? Audience: Weeping...
A : Yes, weeping telling his sickness. I never took this symptom, why? Because I was too much
captured by his feelings. But we have to see the symptoms the way they are and he can't tell his
story without weeping. It must be surely a remedy which has this symptom. A: How was this as a
child? P: My brothers always teased me. A: How were you as a young man on the sexual level? P:
Easily excited. A:What do you mean? That you masturbated regularly, satisfied yourself? P: Yes. A:
From what age? P: From a very early age. A: Already before puberty? P: Yes. He masturbated at a
very young age and we also know this of Staphisagria, but also of other remedies. Which is the
strongest remedy for masturbation in children? Audience: Origanum. A : Yes, Origanum, and which
other remedy? Audience: Bufo. A : Yes, Bufo. I supervised a case where a girl was sitting there with
her eyes turned upward while sucking the dummy (pacifier)*. This was an oral masturbation. It
doesn't always have to be the penis. Constantly and violently sucking the dummy expresses the same
thing. Which other remedy is masturbating at a very young age? Audience: Platina. A : Yes, Platina.
Staphisagria we already mentioned and which other remedy? Audience: Hyoscyamus. Phosphorus.
A : Yes. And Medorrhinum? Is Medorrhinum not in the rubric "masturbation in children"? Audience:
No, only in the Synthetic Repertory. A : Yes, Medorrhinum has to be added in quite a lot of rubrics,
like Tuberculinum bovinum Kent. In the rubric "masturbation" Medorrhinum is an addition from
Clarke and it is also a capital addition in the rubric "industrious". A: You always had problems
urinating. P: Yes, even when I was a child. Whenever I noticed any pressure on the bladder I had to
urinate immediately. A: Did you ever have an inflammation of the bladder or something like that? P:
Not that I know of. Only in the last years. A: The catheter doesn't go through the urethra? P: It is in
the bladder. A: The catheter is in the bladder, is carried outwards through the abdominal wall and
ends in a plastic bag. It doesn't go through the urethra? P: No, no. This was so before, but since I am
at home it is not like that anymore, so that I can go on working. A: Tell me something about your
youth. Probably there was a breaking point. You are a very sensitive person. I have the impression
that the sensitivity of this remedy corresponds to that of Staphisagria. In the next cases you will see
that the emotional sensitivity and even more the sensuality of this remedy is very strong and
therefore it is very difficult to differentiate from Staphisagria and maybe also from Pulsatilla. P: (Is
weeping) My father suffered a lot during the war and he has told us a lot about it. I got excited by
these stories but I was also afraid. I was afraid of the war. I experienced the war and immediately
after the war, in 1948, I went to the military service. He had to do his military service and one day he
met the Jehovah's witnesses. The whole story started then. P: I couldn't bear this. I didn't have an
aversion, but I couldn't bear this. (His voice chokes in his tears.) A: You can say that you are very
sensitive towards injustice. You can't bear any suppression. This is something which you can't
tolerate at all. P: And a really big feeling of responsibility. A: You were also annoyed. You can become
very angry. P: But I won't let myself go. A: Do you easily throw things? P: No. This is a Staphisagria
symptom: throws things away because of suppressed anger. He doesn't do that. A: But you can
become very angry? P: Yes, very much, but I only raise my voice. A: So, an enormous sensitivity
towards injustice. The fact that you were not encouraged like the other children, only because you
come from a family with many children, which was poor, this provoked a kind of hate, a negative
feeling towards religion in general; at least towards the teachers. Are you still anti-religious? P: Yes.
In the meantime I joined the Jehovah's witnesses. I got into contact with the Jehovah's witnesses
through my brother later. I was very active there (is crying). I joined them for 27 years and I even sold
my property, although I had to raise four children. A: Because you believed what was written? P: I
also changed my way of living in this sense (is crying). Then I was treated unjustly by a group of elder
members of the Jehovah's witnesses. They accused me of certain things which were not right and I
couldn't resist. There were six people sitting across from me and I couldn't defend myself anymore.
This is a symptom of which remedy? If somebody is accused of something and he can't say a word
this is a Staphisagria symptom. Staphisagria is very - not haughty, but rather self-confident, proud.
Look at the rubric on page 51: MIND, haughty There you see Staphisagria. Staphisagria is very proud.
When they are accused they can't say anything anymore. They can't react, the anger goes inside and
then the problem starts. These are ailments from suppressed anger. A: At the moment that you feel
you are treated unjustly or judged wrongly you become angry or you start crying? P: Yes. I couldn't
say a word. I couldn't defend myself. Finally there was a big fight. It is easier to become a Jehovah's
witness than to resign from the association. It has lasted for two years, and I have shed many, many
tears. A: Did you cry a lot? P: Yes, day and night (can hardly speak because of his tears). A: You could
say that the sensitivity towards injustice and suppression which you already had as a child is still
there, as well as the feeling of responsibility. As a child you probably needed a lot of affection. You
searched for affection but didn't get it. Also not from your parents? P: They gave me as much as they
could. There were nine children at home and my parents had to work day and night. I think they did
the best they could. A: Actually your brothers humiliated you because of the bed-wetting? P: Yes.
This gave me one blow after the other. This was repeated every day. Hardly one week passed
without humiliation. I was confronted with this every day. A: It is a problem which actually started in
your childhood. Do you understand this? As a child you already had the problem of bed-wetting, and
now the prostate is swollen. This happened because you didn't get the homeopathic remedy which
you needed for this problem. Then you got this catheter and it became even worse because you
couldn't urinate at all after the first catheter. Then they inserted a tube. I will take care that
everything will be all right, also that you can urinate normally. I hope it is not too late, but I don't
think so. We still have time. But you have to stop all the medicines, everything they gave you,
BACTRIM, cytostatics and so on, you have to stop everything. I hope there is still time. Sometimes it
is too late, it depends on the case. With tumors or cancer the destruction is often so far advanced
that you cannot restore it. If you treat a patient with cancer it is important to start with the
treatment in time. We are afraid when it concerns cancer, but there is no reason to be afraid. It is a
big name, like AIDS, but as homeopaths we don't have to be afraid, it concerns only the right remedy,
as in any other case. A: You remained a sensitive person, on the emotional level you still have the
picture of the homeopathic remedy. P: I feel strong. I don't feel ill. A: It's all right. I gave him
Staphisagria and after Staphisagria he had a purulent discharge. It didn't stop at all and I saw him
every week. All my colleagues said that it was a good reaction for him to have a lot of discharge, and
indeed discharges are a good reaction. I repeated Sac-lac and after two or three months I repeated
Staphisagria, but the discharge didn't stop. Then I gave him Pulsatilla, but it didn't change either. The
whole story changed in the sense that he had a very, very strong inflammation of the bladder. He did
not react to Staphisagria, nor to Pulsatilla nor to any other remedy, until a lot of other objective
symptoms appeared which led me to the right remedy. He reacted wonderfully to this remedy, after
a few days the inflammatory state disappeared. FEEDBACK P: When I push hard I still have stitches. I
can't urinate yet. This morning I could only urinate a few drops. My back is much better. I don't have
pain anymore. I still have stitches in the place where I have this cold spot. He had a strange symptom.
Every time he had an urge to urinate he felt a pain in the back on the left side. After urination the
pain disappeared. It was a very strange symptom. Look in the Repertory on page 898: BACK, pain,
urinating after, amel There are two remedies: Lycopodium clavatum and Medorrhinum. A: But you
can't urinate yet? P: No. A: Is there still pus coming out of the penis? P: No. A: There is no purulent
discharge anymore? P: No, nothing. There is no pus in the tube anymore, only water is coming out. A:
Does it run properly? P: Yes. A: What about your hot feet? P: They are a lot better. They are still hot,
but not as hot as they used to be. This was another symptom about which he complained all the
time, namely, hot feet. He was working on roofs, he puts on roofs and he thought this was the reason
for his hot feet. He always had to take off his shoes and socks, he wanted to uncover his feet. Look in
the rubric on page 1222: EXTREMITIES, uncover, inclination to, feet: Agar, Cham, cur, fl-ac, mag-c,
Med, petr, Puls, sang, sanic, sep, Sulph There is another rubric on page 1005: EXTREMITIES, fanned,
wants hands and feet: Med You know that Medorrhinum-people usually are very active. They like to
drive a sports car with an open roof, so that they can feel the wind. Next to them there is always a
certain kind of fruit, which? An orange. And they always like to drive barefoot. A: Do you still uncover
the feet? P: No. A: In what position do you sleep? P: On the right side. Otherwise I always slept on
the left side, but with this tube I had more complaints, therefore I prefer to lie on the right side. A:
Are the palms of the hands still hot? P: No. It was very bad, but now it is better. Oh yes, it has peeled
off. In between it has been worse, but now it is all right again. You see that his hair has grown again.
Maybe this is also because of the homeopathic remedy, but I don't think so. In between he has taken
hormones for a very short time. This is probably the reason. FEEDBACK A: I saw you the last time in
October/November 1987, this is more than one year ago. In the beginning of the treatment I was
wrong and first I gave you another remedy. When you got a severe inflammation of the bladder in
June 1987 I gave you another remedy. Which remedy did I give? Medorrhinum. In June 1987 I gave
him Medorrhinum, because he was weeping all the time while telling his symptoms - this was a very
strong symptom and I ignored it - then also because of the restlessness of the lower limbs, the pain in
the back with urging to urinate, amelioration after urination and because of hot feet. These were the
symptoms which indicated Medorrhinum very strongly and he reacted wonderfully. He had very
strong tenesmus of the bladder which was better after a short time. I don't know whether this
remedy is in the rubric "bladder, tenesmus". Look on page 651: BLADDER, tenesmus: ...
Medorrhinum..... A: Since then it went very well. We will talk about this in a minute. Your problem at
that time was that you couldn't urinate, retention of urine because of a swelling of the prostate, a
constant urge to urinate, thick purulent discharge which already existed quite a long time. Look at
this rubric, it is very important. Where do you find these discharges and so on? You will find the
discharges and the inflammations under "urethra". Look on page 670:

URETHRA, discharge, gonorrheal: ... Med ... Thuj I don't see Causticum nor Staphisagria in this rubric.
Also look in the rubric on page 670: URETHRA, discharge, profuse: ... med ... Thuj Strangely enough
Bufo is also in this rubric. A: There were other symptoms, for example, an enormously hot feeling in
the soles of the feet and also hot hands. This indicates especially Medorrhinum. There are quite a lot
of remedies with hot feet, but the two symptoms together, namely hot feet and hot palms of the
hands indicate Medorrhinum very, very strongly. Alternating hot hands and cold feet or hot feet and
cold hands indicate which remedy? Sepia officinalis. A: You have restless feet in the evening in bed,
but also when you sit down in the evening. Look in the rubric on page 1188: EXTREMITIES,
restlessness, feet: ... Med ... Medorrhinum has to be added in the following sub rubrics on page
1188: EXTREMITIES, restlessness, feet, evening EXTREMITIES, restlessness, feet, sitting, while The
additions are from Boericke and Clarke. You also find Medorrhinum in the rubric on page 1188:
EXTREMITIES, restlessness, leg: ... Med ... A: You were very restless before urination, had stitching
pain with urging for urination. Where did you have the stitching pain? P: In the penis, in the glans. A:
There was also a peeling of the skin of the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. P: Yes. I have
had this for years. A: You told me that you have hot soles of the feet, because you were a roofer and
work a lot on roofs. I gave you the remedy in 10M potency in June, and the bladder inflammation
improved very quickly. I repeated the remedy three times afterwards. In the meantime the catheter
was obstructed. I sent you to a specialist in your neighborhood and he inserted a new tube. It
concerned a carcinoma of the prostate which couldn't be operated. If I read the report from the
specialist I see that he proposed to inject ZYLADEX, although the inflammation of the bladder reacted
very well to the remedy. He did it once and what did you get from that? P: Stitching pain in the
nipples and later on the breasts started to swell. I think he was injected with female hormones. After
the first injection he noticed how his breasts started to swell so he immediately stopped this. Then
he took hormone tablets a few times - I think, female hormones - and he also stopped these
immediately. I don't know whether you have seen people who have been treated this way. The
penis becomes very little and the breasts very big. It is terrible to see how much these people change
because of the treatment. They become women, really women and they even develop a high voice.
He stopped every treatment of this type. A: You had this injection only once? P: Yes. Then he also
gave me some tablets. When I took the tablets I could urinate a little bit more regularly. A: You
stopped taking these tablets? P: Yes. I already stopped these two months ago. I reported to you that
my breasts started to swell and you advised me to stop taking the tablets. I did this but I can't urinate
yet, only a few drops. On the other hand I must tell you that I feel much better, especially I don't
have inflammation in the bladder anymore. There is no pus coming out, also nothing next to the tube
and the water is clear. There was still some blood and that's why I have this pain, but this is already
quite a long time ago. A: How is the urination at the moment? P: I still can't urinate. Sometimes
some drops are coming out once or twice a day. At the moment there is still some purulent discharge
of the penis, not out of the tube anymore. A: When did you take the remedy the last time? P: Six
weeks ago. You gave me two other tablets to take home, in case the pain would come back. I took
the last remedy one month ago. I gave him Medorrhinum 10M and a few other tablets to take
home. When the pain and the inflammation appeared again he took a tablet and it became better
immediately afterwards. As far as I know this man was never sexually hyperactive and nevertheless
he reacted very well to Medorrhinum. Medorrhinum is not only a remedy for sexually hyperactive
people. Question: Did you ask him whether he ever had gonorrhea? A : I begged him to tell me
everything of his life and I have three or four hours of consultation on the video, but he never ever
said anything about gonorrhea or a gonorrheal discharge, he had a very serious life. Question: Did he
have any other symptoms, for example, warts? A : No, he didn't have warts. Remark: In the last video
he had swelling under the eyes. A : Yes. In the second video he didn't have swelling under the eyes,
but now he has again. Of which remedy do you think? Audience: Medorrhinum. A : Yes,
Medorrhinum has this. Audience: Apis. A : Yes, Apis also, but swelling under the eyes is very
particular for a certain remedy. Audience: Kali carbonicum. A : No, in Kali carbonicum it is above the
eyes. Look in the Repertory on page 355: FACE, bloated, under the eyes: Apis, ars, aur, bry, kali-c,
merc, nux-v, olnd, phos, puls Of course Kali carbonicum is there, but Kali carbonicum is more
between the eyebrows and the lids. Aurum metallicum and Arsenicum are both second degree. Apis
is also there, but in Apis the swelling is more around the eyes, everywhere. There is also Bryonia alba,
Phosphorus - do you remember the Phosphorus cases which we saw last year? Nux vomica and
Mercurius. But for Aurum metallicum this is a very important symptom. If you see somebody with a
chronic swelling under the eyes you must always think of Aurum metallicum. Question: What is the
prognosis in this case? A : I don't know. Up to now he is doing well, he is still working as a roof maker.
What do you think - to which remedy will he develop? The weeping has disappeared and when he
went to the hospital for a new catheter I received a report from the urologist that the bladder was
paralyzed. The bladder has become very little and sensitive, it cannot contain the urine anymore and
doesn't have the force to push out the urine. It is a kind of paralysis. Which is the remedy? Audience:
Causticum. A : Yes, Causticum, and this is also the last remedy I gave him. I think he hasn't needed
any other remedy but Causticum for about one year. Already from the beginning you could notice a
very strong sensitivity to injustice. But at that time, in the acute state the weeping was a very clear
symptom, then the hot feet and hands, the pain in the back which ameliorated after urination and so
on and he reacted very well to Medorrhinum. I can't say anything else about the prognosis. Now, he
is in treatment for about three years and I can't do anything but wait and see whether he will
develop new symptoms. Remark: Before you said that the treatment of cancer is not a problem, that
the diagnosis is irrelevant for homeopaths. A : Yes, I've said this, but don't misunderstand me. For the
prognosis it is important to know that it is cancer, but it is of no importance for the choice of a
remedy. Question: Have you had the experience that well-chosen remedies don't work when it
concerns cancer? A : No. Well-chosen remedies work very well in cancer. The problem is that
somebody starts trembling if you have a patient with cancer and because of your anxiety you can't
think logically anymore. Remark: No, that's not the problem. I wanted to know if you can treat
cancer. A : Yes. We have some patients who are cured. Mostly it concerned breast and uterus
carcinoma. These kinds of cancer respond very quickly to the treatment. We should have the
opportunity to treat cancer patients more often, but this is impossible, because first they have to
follow the allopathic way. Only when they are incurable we are allowed to treat them. Basically
cancer can be treated, but there is a big difference between cancers. There are so many different
types of cancer, as many as there are people. One cancer does not resemble another, it is only a
common name. Question: And what about leukemia? A : I had a case of leukemia which I treated
with China. Question: ... (not understandable) A : Yes, but AIDS is also only a name, a name like a big
gun. The name itself doesn't say much, we don't need to worry about this. According to our common
sense all this is a question of resistance, a question of the weakening of the immune system. How
many patients have we already treated in the last years who had AIDS, without our knowing it. Then,
they found a virus and they called the disease AIDS and after two years they may find another virus
and give it another name and after another two years they will find another virus which is much
more aggressive and so on and so on. This is the problem with classical medicine. Our problem is to
strengthen the resistance, because this is the basis of all, not the virus. Remark: But my problem is
that these people often receive METHADON because they were addicted to drugs in the past. But
according to me there is a contradiction between METHADON and homeopathic treatment. A : The
patient has to make his own decision. They have to decide whether they want to be treated this or
that way. It is none of our business the way somebody else has to go along with his life. If they come
with their problems you as a homeopath have to try to find the remedy which gives them the energy
to become healthy again.

Affections of the prostate gland If a suppressed or mismanaged gonorrhoea is followed by an
inflammation of the prostate, Nitr. ac. 30th, three globules in water, generally helps, and is
sometimes capable of removing the whole trouble without the further use of Puls. or Thuja. Chronic
swellings of this gland likewise frequently yield to Nitr. ac., and if suppuration sets in, Sulph. at
suitable intervals, either before or after Nitr. ac., often does good service. In a very bad case of
chronic swelling and suppuration of the glands which came under my treatment, three doses of
Sulph. 30th, two globules each, immediately effected a very favorable change ; the improvement
progressed visibly for three weeks, the swelling and hardness and the pus which was discharged
through the urethra, diminishing all the time ; after which Nitr. ac. advanced the improvement
considerably within four weeks, so that the discharge of pus had almost ceased and only some hard
places and some swelling remained ; another dose of Sulph. removed all further trouble except a few
hardnesses which yielded to Silic.

5. Kamthan P.S., specific remedies for respiratoric, cardias en

urinary diseases
If the urinary symptoms of the urinary diseases like strangury or dysuria, structure, prostatitis,
urethritis, cystitis etc. are similar to those of the remedial drugs as given below, the drug selected
accordingly, hardly falls Cantharis vesicatoria 3x to 6 (In repeated dozes) : (a) Dr. Hughes
considered Canth., the main remedy for acute cystitis, nephritis and inflammatory strangury; also for
spermatorrhoea with gonorrhoeal irritation. Dr. Farrington found it valuable in removing renal calculi
as per urinary symptoms. (b) I used Canth. 3x (every few mts. or half-hourly as the case was) with
great success as per under-mentioned symptoms : Retention with agonising pain; passing of urine
drop by drop, sometimes bloody urine; Painful straining and urging, burning before, during and after
urination; intense burning, cutting pain in urethra, ureter or bladder. Aconitum napellus 3x (In
repeated dozes) (a) Dr. Jahr, Dr. Hempel and Dr. Farrington emphasised the use of Acon. as the first
specific remedy in initial stage of retention, nephritis, cystitis. PAGE 45 (b) I never failed in removing
retention of urine in infants, new-born children and sometimes even in adults with febrile and
painful state in incipient stage. Initial stage Feverishness and restlessness The rest symptoms
similar to those of Canth. Terebinthinae oleum 3x - 6 Indicated often in cystitis, haematuria,
urethritis, nephritis, with painful, scanty and bloody urine or suppressed, erection painful (Canth.)
Solidago virgaurea 3x Painful in kidneys with sensitiveness to pressure, sometimes radiating to
abdomen and bladder; urine scanty, painful, clear and offensive with sediments. Berberis vulgaris -
200 Excellent remedy for renal colic of sticking, digging, stitching in any kidney, extending to bladder,
ureter, burning scanty urine; bubbling sensation in the kidney region; lumbago - 10 to 15 drops of the
mother tincture every 3 hours subsides pain and expels stone even. Note : 1. I benefited kidney
patient very often whenever Berb. V. was alternated with Nux. V. 2. Whenever Berb. V. failed in
removing stone, Hydrangea 15 to 29 crops every 3 hours not only expelled the stone whenever it
was - in kidney, ureter or bladder but painful urination caused by stricture or painful prostatitis, was
also set right. Its alternation with Nux. V. 3x or 30 helped a great deal when digestive derangement
of Nux. type was present. PAGE 46 Sabal serrulata Often useful in cystitis with prostatic
hypertrophy and difficult urination, better service it has rendered in mother tincture, 15 - 20 drops
every 3 hours in water. Note : Fabiana 15 to 20 drops in water prevents and removes suppuration
of the prostate glands and equally effective in cystitis, gonorrhoea, dysuria and uric acid diathesis
with difficult urination. Stigmata maydis (in 10 to 15 drop dozes) A valuable remedy for cystitis,
gonorrhoea, kidney colic, enlarged prostate glands, dysuria, with blood and red sand in urine,
retention or suppression of urine, scanty and painful passing of urine. Pareira brava 3x Indicated in
renal colic, urethritis and prostatic enlargement; pain extends to thigh or glans penis, with a feeling
as if the bladder is distended, constant urging and straining to pass urine, but has to change postures
to pass scanty urine. Uva ursi - 10 to 20 drops 4 times at least In cystitis urethritis, when urine
contains blood, mucus and pus, frequent urging and great burning, tearing in bladder at the end or
after urination. Ocimum canum 6 Useful in right sided kidney colic, pain in ureter with red sand in
urine, seldom yellow. Hedeoma pulegioides 6 Pain along ureter, gastric pain with nausea, dull pain
in left kidney region, sometimes extending to bladder burning in the neck of bladder with great
desire to urinate and inability to retain it. Equisetum hyemale 3x Found useful in pain in the region
of right kidney, radiating to lower abdomen with urgent desire to urinate. Pain and feeling of fullness
in bladder and intense pain at the close of urination, sometimes during urination also. PAGE 47
Eupatorium purpureum 3x Dull pain in kidneys, burning in bladder and in urethra during urination,
bladder feels full with desire to urinate, urine sometimes milky and scanty - often indicated in
dysuria, enlarged prostate, renal dropsy, copious urine, bladder irritation. Note : For haematuria
(discharge of blood with or without urine from penis) - Ham. 1x to 3) is excellent to stop bleeding if
it is thin and dark, when the blood is red and thin, Mill. in 5-drop-dozes; Canth. 3x when the blood
is red with very painful urine; when the urine is red and scanty - Tereb. 3x; when urine is red, bloody,
offensive with sticking, burning in urethra - Nit. ac. 6; Dr. Farrington took Ipec. as an excellent
remedy for haematuria. Sarsaparilla officinalis 3x - 6 For renal colic of right side, urine being scanty,
bloody, sandy and painful, the pain is agg at the end of urination which is a guiding symptom. Note :
1. Lyc. covers well retention, cystitis, strangury, renal colic and disposition to form stone when the
the urine is red and scanty with red sand in urine in chronic cases particularly, flatulence with a
feeling of satiety despite hunger, agg in the evening (4 to 8 p.m. ) 2. Child cries before urinating -

7. Vitoulkas, talks on classical homeopatthy, de the esalen conferences,

1980, part 1
Swollen prostate Argentum nitricum (arg-n.) Case George: It is characteristic of this type of case
not to have many symptoms. Also this is a case where you have a deeper condition such as diabetes
which is controlled by diet, associated with swelling of the prostate. This is not a malignant case.
Who wants to do the analysis? He is a person with nothing to show in the case regarding his
character. Where shall we base our prescription then? The pathology is there and we can go and
prescribe for the pathology only. Med. is justified the most. Who prescribed Med.? Why? Since we
do not have any symptomatology to go on, we have to go on the desires and aversions. The desires
are for milk products (underlined once), desire for fish (underlined once), desire for sweets (three),
desire for wine (three), and desire for salt (once). The thirst is normal. Response: If we had gone by
that picture, we would have chosen Sulph. George: Sulph. has an aversion to salt. He has three
underlines for sweets and only one underline for salt. A Sulph. case will show an aversion to fish, a
desire for wine, desire for sweets (three times), and a desire for salt (twice). That would make a
Sulph. case. Question: So it seems to rest on the relationship to salt. George: And the amount. We
will discuss this. Here is perhaps the key to the whole case. Sweets cannot be taken of course
because this patient is diabetic. Now what is the information that we have about this person? This
point is important for you to remember before you can prescribe. He controls his diet because of the
diabetes, which means that he is strict and cannot give in to his aversions and desires in regard to
food. So "used to desire salt" means a strong desire of the organism which is now suppressed
because it is not good. The same with sweets. The desires are not given in to. There is a desire, but if
he gives in to this, it will affect his diabetes. Question: I don't see what you are getting at. George:
He says now that he desires sweets. But he is diabetic and the desire for sweets is strong, but of
course he does not take it. Otherwise his diet will not be holding his diabetes in check. Question: Can
you trust that symptom since it is something that he avoids? George: He has the desire and
sometimes the desire is not so strong. Here it is very strong. He said that the desire for salt WAS
strong also. This is the information he gave and so I had the same information that you now have. So
I have to reason out whether this is a Phos. case. Desire sweets is Phos. Desires salt is Phos.
Response: This is the reason why I would never play poker with George. (Laughter) George: So you
are going through the desires and the aversions in that case. Correct? And you have to couple the
aversions and desires with the diabetic diet. He also dislikes warmth. Question: But you trust the
being warm more because he does control his diet, and so he could have cravings just because he
avoids a lot of foods. George: Fish he can take. So does anyone want to change their prescription?
Response: If you go by the cravings, then Nat-m. is a possibility, although in Nat-m. sweets are not so
strong. But if you were a diabetic and never ate sweets, you would probably start to crave them after
a while. George: Yes, the fact remains that there are two symptoms in the cravings which are
underlined three times. He stressed this to the doctor very strongly - desires salts and desires sweets.
Neither of the two he can take at the moment. Response: Well that is Med. or Nit-ac. George: If you
look in the repertory. Response: Arg-n., Calc., Carb-v., Chin. (has been added). Question: Wouldn't
you feel like this was a closed person because of the lack of information. (Laughter) George: I don't
think so. He is helping at the levels that he can. I feel that he has controlled his cravings. He says that
he desires sweets and salt (three times), desires fish (twice). I feel that I can trust these desires;
otherwise I have nothing to go on at all in the case. As I said, Med. is a very good prescription in this.
If all of you had written Med., I would not argue with it. I would say yes. The only thing that I would
like to have in that case would be that the desire for sweets and salt be underlined twice instead of
three times. But he has strongly stressed the desire for both. Since we are going to just analyze his
desires and aversions in order to find out about the urinary symptoms, can we definitely come down
to a single remedy and say that it is it by analyzing his urinary symptoms? No, there is not a chance.
Question: But isn't Med. ordinarily chilly. Wouldn't you want to have the "worse with heat" rubric?
George: Exactly. But I would have said okay because his feet seem to be quite warm. Question: What
is that for? Med.? George: Yes, Med. will have warm feet. Question: And it would not bother you
that Arg-n. does not have the craving for fish or wine or milk? Question: Do you ever send a case
back to the doctor and tell him to get more information? George: (Laughs) Everything is
programmed. He has come there and said that he will come back on a certain date to get his remedy.
If not, he is upset. That can happen sometimes, but it changes the whole programme and if I do this
in 5-6 cases, then it is difficult. Here you are desperate. So you go by the key symptoms. I bring it to
you to show you how you can think in such cases. The symptom which is accentuated is a symptom
on which you can rely. You can disregard it only if the rest of the picture is clear and the remedy has
not been shown so far. I shall repeat that. A symptom which is underlined three times you can rely
upon, but you can disregard it only if the rest of the case is a strong picture of a remedy. Then you
have a symptom like "desires onions" (underlined three times) or "aversion to onions" (underlined
three times), but the whole picture goes for say Mag-m. Forget it. But if you DON'T have any
symptoms and you have two cravings, you are going to go by that picture. Question: When you say
that the whole picture fits, you don't necessarily mean that all of the data fit and line up perfectly
with a remedy, but you mean that the essence picture is there with these other confirmatory
symptoms? George: Yes. Question: So you are doing keynote prescribing? George: No, because I
took the two main symptoms, the two strong desires, and the general heat of the patient and I also
know that Arg-n. can have an enlargement of the prostate. This is not outside its pathology.
Question: But isn't that keynote prescribing? I mean, you are doing it because you have no other
choice. George: No. Keynote data prescribing is where you have "desire for sweets" and you give
Sulph. Or you have desire for onions and you give Sabad. Question: Arg-n. is not listed here for
"enlargement of the prostate". Should we add it? Question: It is a sycotic remedy, isn't it? You might
suspect gonorrhoea in this man's history somewhere? George: This is a good question, because most
probably I thought about Med. The desire for sweets is Med. That is a possibility. But what took me
away from Med. was the fact that the underlines were not those of Med. The second thing that took
me away from it was that this kind of disturbance starts very late. He is 68 years old. I would not
think that he had had gonorrhoea, because if he had had it at a young age, we would have had much
more stressful symptoms than he has presented us with, as far as his prostate is concerned. There is
a sensitivity of the prostate, and if there was a real gonorrhoea which has not gone away and he
needs Med., this symptomatology would have been MUCH stronger - MUCH MORE SEVERE. In this
case it does not look severe. That is why he responds so well. Question: So basically you are saying
that if somebody has a sycotic miasm, it would be unlikely for them to take on a significant sycosis
miasm from an earlier gonorrhoea if they had a strong vital force, which this man has. George: I did
not follow that. Repeats: He has a strong vital force because he had been well until a late age. The
he has a normal problem for that age. So it is unlikely that he had an earlier gonorrhoeal miasm?
George: Exactly. That is why I did not prescribe Med. If I had prescribed it, you would not be able to
counteract that. But here the response was so good. The urination became absolutely normal
immediately. Question: On what remedy? George: On Arg-n. 200. Question: That is based on the
cravings? George: Yes, and the heat. His sleep is very good. He wakes up refreshed. He is now in the
second year that Arg-n. He is 70 years old now and he has no problems. Of course this is a strong
man. He has a strong constitution. Question: So you expect that the symptoms that somebody gives
you, should match the intensity in the repertory all the way across? George: Yes. When you have to
differentiate between so little symptomatology you come down to the best possible that you can.
Your mind should go automatically and quickly. Response: So you have to assume that he REALLY
wants sweets ... and salt? George: Yes. Response: Because I did not make that assumption.
(Laughter) George: That old symptom is still valid for me. I take it and put it into the picture. If I have
a present picture now, for example, and I have an old symptom. It will make the picture whole. So I
take it and I use it. Question: I usually avoid doing that because I see a new layer. George: A new
layer, in case that does not fit with this. If I had a remedy here which fits the picture and that old
picture symptom does not fit, then I will give that remedy and ignore that old symptom. If I cannot
make a picture here and taking this symptom completes the picture for me, then I will use that
symptom. Response: We would have the advantage of going back to the guy and asking, "Do you still
really like salt?", and he would say yes or no. If he said no, then you would not use that symptom.
Response: No, not if he controlled it. George: It is a matter of suppression. For instance, you get ...
especially with salt ... a person who is Nat-m. and he needs salt a lot. Then you say, "No, you cannot
have it." What is going to happen is that in two or three months time there will be no desire for salt
any more, but depending on the possibility of his organism, from a physical element like gastritis to
vertigo to depression. That symptom simply ... and this is VERY important because Americans are
very conscious of diet and you have to be careful. Don't tell them to take as much salt as they want,
but the lack of salt in the bloodstream will produce other symptomatology if he needs it and cannot
have it. You will lose the desire for salt, but if it is a Nat-m. patient, I take this and complete the
picture. Response: But there isn't a picture in this case. George: Yes. (Laughs) Question: Are you
saying that a suppression of salt could be like a suppression of foot sweat? It could make you sick?
George: Yes, that is what I maintain. But don't turn them loose with their desires. If they desire
sweets, then they could control it a bit, but do not scare him to death that if he eats any kind of
sweets that is a poison. Take a better kind of sweet, like fruits and honey. Then you will have
something to replace. But with salt, there is nothing to replace it. And so there would be a
suppression and this symptom will definitely go deeper and it may produce new symptoms at a
deeper level. I have seen it many times. Response: If I may make a comment, I think I can see some
confusion here that I could help with. When we have so few symptoms what we do is to fall back on
what we think we know. But actually this is very consistent with everything that you have taught us
all along. Because if you ask yourself the Question, "As a total being, what is this person's problem?"
And you say, "Where is the centre of gravity * of the symptoms?" which we have always talked
about. It is not on mental or emotional planes. It is on the metabolic plane - the worse with heat and
the cravings are represented as an imbalance on a purely metabolic plane, and the hormonal plane
with the prostate and so on. So actually it fits the picture even though we say that he does not have
the craving for salt anymore. All he did was to manipulate an imbalance that was already there. So
you can take it in this case where you might not in another case where there is a fuller
symptomatology on other levels and the centre of the gravity is not the metabolic plane. George:
Say that we were debating what to give in this case - Med. or Arg-n. I would not have been so sure,
that I could give that remedy and that it was going to act. But it is also sure that I would have
suggested Arg-n. In NO case you will be cent percent sure. Unless I have done a case in the morning
and I give you a typical case in the evening of a remedy which I gave in the morning and then
immediately you will recognize it. But this is having the remedy in your mind very very fresh and then
having a typical case. If you go to repertorize it, it may not come specifically to that remedy. But
knowing that remedy will allow you to say, "This is the remedy." Question: If there was a sycosis
strain in this man, wouldn't you give Arg-n.? It is a major sycotic remedy. I am referring to what you
said about not thinking that gonorrhoea was involved in this. George: I don't think that he had
gonorrhoea because I thought that if he had had it since his young age, he would not be expected at
age 68 only to have this degree of problem. His problem would be much more severe. Because of
the infection that would have gone into his prostate, his prostate would be ... only for the past 8
years had he had prostate troubles and that would look much more severe. With this kind of prostate
gland disturbance at age 68, that is an almost normal disease for that age. I would consider him quite
healthy. Also his diabetes has been controlled through diet since 1958, he has a good constitution. I
believe that his diabetes must have been helped a lot by the remedy. The remedy fits the entire case
and I am sure... you see, he did not come since the end of 1979. He did not come anymore to tell us if
he had done any research in his diabetes to see the level in the blood and urine, but I am really sure
that this would have an effect on his diabetes as well. But if that person had gonorrhoea, we would
be justified in giving Med. If he had told us in the history that he had had gonorrhoea, just because of
that information, the Arg-n. would be out and the Med. would be in. If it had been "thirst for cold
drinks", that same case would have become Phos. Question: You said that if he had had gonorrhoea
at the age of 17, it would not make any difference? George: No. At any age if you have had
gonorrhoea, I would give Med. Response: Arg-n. has a 2 for gonorrhoeal discharge. Question: What
if his father had had gonorrhoea? George: That is okay. He will still get Arg-n. If he had the
gonorrhoea himself, I would go to Med. This is my way of thinking. I am just giving you how I would
think. Question: But on the basis of what you said yesterday, if he had had gonorrhoea at 17 and we
had reason to believe that he was not exposed after that, then the chances are that that was an
acute case and he did not graft a miasm on because he did not have any trouble until the age of 68.
Correct? So then the "worse by heat" would offset that. George: (Laughs) I would have given Med.
You have a good question, but it is very subtle. You would be discussing a hypothetical case while
here we have the facts
