Response to Request for Comment

Highland School
November 9, 2017

Last week, Highland School became aware of behavior by several of our Upper School students that was
a violation of school policy. This situation has been handled and thoroughly evaluated as an internal
disciplinary incident.

In every serious disciplinary situation, it is our practice to avail ourselves of outside resources and
counsel to insure that we are completely and accurately evaluating circumstances to determine if they
require notification to external entities, including referral to counselling and reporting to law
enforcement. After more than a week of investigation by senior members of Highlands Upper School
leadership team, at this time the facts as we understand them, do not rise above that of an internal
disciplinary matter.

The letter to parents to which you refer was an internal communication to our community that
acknowledged a serious disciplinary issue, insured broad awareness, and detailed our response. Since
issuance of that message, the situation remains an internal disciplinary matter.

As previously stated, the safety and privacy of our students is at the forefront of everything we do. All of
the students who have received disciplinary consequences are minors. To safeguard student privacy,
the school will not provide an interview or comment further on the disciplinary actions or the specific
student conduct.
