ANALOG ELECTRONICS LABORATORY ASSIGNMENTS

LAB N1: DIODE APPLICATION CIRCUITS

1. DC REGULATED POWER SUPPLY

Power supplies are essential for the operation of electronic devices and systems
and their functions are provide stable DC voltage and current.
Rectifiers are essentially AC/DC (figure 1) converters that use diode
characteristics to restrain current direction flow.

Figure 1. AC/DC converter block diagram (taken from

Capacitor filter reduce the voltage oscilation eliminating high frequency

components of V2. Additional smoothing process is performed by the voltage
regulator circuit. Voltage regulation process may include zener-BJT circuits or
specific integrated circuits (Voltage regulators ICs) like the LMXXXX National
Semiconductors regulators family.

Short-circuit protection is an important design element to prevent components

destruction. This protection can be achieved using relays, BJT transistors and
even Silicon Controlled Rectifiers (SCR).

2. VOLTAGE MULTIPLIERS

A voltage multiplier is an electronic circuit that converts alternate current power

from a lower voltage to a higher DC voltage, using diodes and capacitors.
Voltage multipliers use the clamping action to increase rectified peak voltages
without the need to increase the voltage capacity of the transformer.
Multiplication factors of two, three and four are common. Voltage multipliers are
used in high voltage and low current applications such as cathode ray tubes
(CRT), lasers, X-ray tubes, ion pumps and particle acceleration1.

Voltage multipliers operation is hazardous because they store energy in open

circuit mode (no load) and can inflict serious damage and eventually cause
death.

3. Assignment

3.1. Design a variable regulated DC voltage power supply from 0 to 24v and ILMAX =
2A.
The regulation must be performed using zener diode and BJT transistors. The
source must have a short-circuit protection circuit and analog display of load
voltage.
Specify each one of the circuit components, considering power dissipation
conditions.

3.2. Design a voltage multiplier circuit that provides 68VDC and will be able to delivery
250mA.

Deliverables: Printed circuit board (PCB); IEEE report including memory

calculations, theoretical foundation, simulations, measurements, conclusions,
recommendations and bibliography.
