TITLE: BACK PRESSURE SPECIFICATION FOR PSV PROJECT: MEG regeneration plant (2090 / 1517) LEAD ENGINEER: VISHAL PAWAR LESSON LEARNT: Lesson leamt is to always specify maximum possible back pressure on the PSV, irrespective of PSV will observe that pressure while relieving or not. In case, PSV will not observe particular maximum backpressure during relieving, note shall be introduced to that effect stating that maximum pressure shall be used for mechanical design of the PSV. DESCRIPTION: Attached Sketch (Attachment 1) indicates Rich MEG flash drum PSV which is sized for the governing case of gas blow by from the slug catcher. (Slug catcher design pressure = 97.4barg, Rich MEG flash drum design pressure = 13barg) This Rich MEG flash drum PSV is required to relieve around 63678 kg//hr during gas blow-by from slug catcher, where backpressure shall be 3.5barg and required PSV orifice is of P type. (109-PSV-1004 datasheet is attached along - Attachment 2) Maximum back pressure on this PSV when not relieving, is around 12.9barg because of not expected that gas blow by from slug catcher and OT depressurization can occur simultaneously. the onshore terminal emergency depressurization. | ‘Since backpressure on this PSV while relieving is 3.5barg (typically more than 10% of 13barg), conventional PSV can not be used and it is required to go for Balanced bellow type of PSV. However, as per API 526, ‘Table 12-Spring loaded pressure relief valves’, balanced below PSV can not be used where backpressure on the PSV exceeds around 10.4barg pressure, (refer attached API-526 table 12 — Attachment 3). This outlet pressure limit is, imespective of backpressure whether it shall be seen by PSV while relieving or not relieving. Possible solutions on this problem:- * Use smaller PSVs in parallel for which outlet pressure limit is more than maximum possible backpressure on PSV * Use Pilot type of PSV In our project, decision was taken to use Pilot type of PSV. CONCLUSION: Always specify maximum possible back pressure on the PSV in datasheet, irrespective of PSV will observe that pressure while relieving or not. ‘As can be seen from the above discussed case that, if maximum pressure for the mechanical design would not have been specified then there could have been wrong selection of the PSV. It can be observed from the 109-PSV-1004 datasheet that, note 6 clearly states the backpressure for the mechanical design of the PSV. TT?
