There is a vast difference between the typical modern church and the First Century Church. In many cases, congregations are doing the exact opposite of what Jesus and the apostles taught. The poor are neglected and despised. In the First Century donations (never tithes) were taken ONLY for the needy. Now money is taken from the needy to fund the lifestyles of rich preachers. The early Church was a family of faith which cared one for another seven days a week. Now you barely speak to other church members outside of the ninety-minute weekly service.
