Experiment 6

Relationship of Evaporation and Condensation Temperatures

on the Cooling Rate and Heat Transfer

Objective: To analyze the effect of evaporation and condensation temperatures on the cooling
rate and heat transfer.

Materials and Apparatus:

Refrigeration Cycle Demonstration Unit

Water Supply

Procedure:

Before using the unit:

1. Be familiarized with all parts of the set-up. DO NOT CHANGE ANY SETTING unless
instructed to do so.

Before starting the experiment:

1. Check for any damages in the set-up parts, wirings, tubings, etc.
2. Check if the water tubings are connected to the water supply.
3. Make sure that the platform for the electronic console is stable.
4. Ensure enough space around the unit for mobility.

Start-up:
1. Check the correct position of the ball valves (isolating valve should be open).
2. Connect all sensor cables accordingly into the front panel of the electronic console. Refer
to the labels attached to each cable.
3. Connect the hermetic compressor cable to the back panel of the electronic console.
4. Plug the unit into the electric socket.
5. Turn on the circuit breaker at the back of the electronic console.
6. Turn on the electronic console switch.
7. Turn on the water supply into the coils in the condenser and evaporator. Adjust the water
flow using the needle valves to about 1.5 L/min for both the Evaporator and Condenser.
8. Turn on the hermetic compressor switch.
9. Let the unit work for about 15 min to reach uniform operation conditions.

Experiment proper:
1. After 15 min, record all readings needed as indicated in the Data Sheet below.
2. Select five (5) water flow rate values and, with the aid of the needle valve, reduce the
water flow in the Condenser to the next water flow rate value selected.
3. Allow the unit to stabilize for a few minutes and record the obtained results (see Data
Sheet).
4. Repeat steps 1, 2 and 3 for the remaining water flow rate values selected.
5. Record the results in the Data Sheet shown below.
6. Select two (2) more water flow rate values for the Evaporator and repeat steps 1 to 5 for
each of the remaining water flow rate values for the Evaporator.
7. Plot the results in Heat Transfer (W) vs Condensation Temperature graphs for all
Evaporation Temperatures.

After the experiment:

1. Turn off the hermetic compressor switch.
2. Turn off the water supply to the unit. Leave needle valves that control the water flow
open.
3. Turn off the electronic console switch.
4. Turn off the circuit breaker at the back of the electronic console.
5. Unplug the unit from the electric socket.
6. Unplug the hermetic compressor cable from the electronic console.
7. Unplug the sensor cables from the electronic console.
8. Tidy up the workplace.

Some things to discuss in the Laboratory Report:

Introduction:
1. Refrigeration Cycle
2. Heat Transfer

Methodology
1. Narrate the step-by-step procedure in paragraph form
2. Include a sketch or a diagram of the apparatus or parts of it if needed in any part of the
procedure.

=

Heat transfer to the surroundings:

= 0.8( )
where:
0.8 =

Total heat transfer in the Evaporator:

" = +

2. Calculate the heat transfer in the condenser:

= (4 3 )
where:

=

Heat transfer to the surroundings:

= 0.8( )
where:
0.8 =

Total heat transfer in the Evaporator:

3. Summarize calculations in the Table below:

Coolant temperature in the Condenser ST-6: TC (C)

Coolant temperature in the Evaporator ST-9: TE (C)
Total Heat Transfer in the Condenser: Q C (W)
Total Heat Transfer in the Evaporator: Q E (W)

4. Plot the results in Heat Transfer (W) vs Condensation Temperature graphs for all
Evaporation Temperatures. Analyze and interpret the obtained trends in your graph and
calculation results.
