Today we are going to identify numbers and add them together. This is important because you must add what the answer to an
numbers and objects everyday of your life. For example, if you were getting cupcakes for your addition problem is
classmates you must count how many like chocolate and how many like vanilla and add them together to called?
see how many cupcakes you would need all together. 4. What is an example of

Ask the students how many children have hats and how many dont. After they have answered then ask
them to add the students that do have hats to the students who dont to find out how many students there
are total.
5. Teaching
The teacher will write numbers 1-12 on the board and review the numbers with students. The teacher will
ten choose numbers at random and make addition problems such as 2+3= and work with the children to
solve them until the teacher feels the students are comfortable. The teacher will then pull up a flipchart of
the Pom Pom Addition sheet. The teacher will roll two dice and let the children observe and identify the
numbers rolled. The teacher will move colored dots to each circle to represent the numbers rolled. The
teacher will then have the class count all the dots and put the total amount in the bottom circle.
6. Transition
The students will stand up in their spots and dance and sing along to the song ADDEM UP while also
reviewing their numbers and common addition problems.
7. Guided practice
Each student will get their own Addition sheet, 24 pom-poms, and two dice. With the teacher walking
around and assisting the children will begin rolling their dice and recording the numbers rolled and
finally adding them together.
8. Closure and review
Today we learned how to take two numbers and add them together to find the sum.
9. Independent practice
The students will be placed into pre-determined pairs. Each pair will work together to come up with their
own addition problems and then work together to solve them. The teacher will collect the papers and use
them as an exit ticket.

Relevance/Rationale
It is important to be able to add because in everyday life you are required to count and add. To be able to build anything it is required to know how to
add measurements.
Exploration, Extensions, and Supplemental
Exploration- The teacher could add on to this lesson by allowing the children to add larger numbers or larger amount of numbers. This lesson could
also be done using different manipulatives.
Extensions-For students who dont understand the teacher could work with them one on one or in small groups using large manipulatives and
thoroughly explaining the addition problem while assisting the child/ren in solving it.
Supplemental- Early finishers could play addition games on the classroom iPads or computers or see how many addition problems they can create
and solve in that period of time.
Assessment Criteria for Success
Formal- The teacher will collect the problems created and solved by the pairs to make sure the children are understanding.
Informal- The teacher will observe as the children roll their dice, record their answers, and solve their problems to make sure the students are getting
correct answers.
Accommodations and Access for All
Pairs will be pre- determined by teacher to accommodate students of varying levels and learning styles.
