Mr. Garcia - WORLD RELIGIONS - Fall 2017

Introduction

The Make Your Own Religion Project (M.Y.O.R.P.) A project designed to

ensure proper understanding of religion given our study of the origin and

different dimensions of religion. This project fits anywhere in our study of world

religions, however it is assigned at this point in the semester because; by now

we have covered the chapters dealing with primeval religions, the ancestors to

western religions, and sampled western and eastern world religions.

Goals and Objectives

Goal: The goal of this project is for students to use their creative powers along

with their deductive reasoning and analytical skills, to create a religion of their

own.

Objectives: Students will accomplish the goal of this project by:

Reading and understanding the seven dimensions of religion.

Answer guiding questions to ensure proper application of previously

acquired knowledge on the nature and the various forms of religion.

Employ the seven dimensions of religion to forge their religion.

Deliverables

Consulting the required reading for ideas as to the various elements of religions

and combine (or invent) them into your own.

Graphic Organizers

2-page Informational essay (MLA format) on your religion

One paper per group.

Will be graded on clarity, content, and creativity.

Religious symbol - make a religious symbol.

Designed specifically for your religion.

Must be included in both paper and presentation.

Presentation (ppt/slides/prezi/etc)

Use the Seven Dimensions of Religion to frame and structure your essay and

presentation.

Guiding Questions

Make sure that somewhere in that framework you answer the follow questions:

1. What are the key characteristics of your religion?

2. What behaviors are promoted by your religion?

3. What behaviors are prohibited by your religion?

4. What is the cosmology of this religion?

5. What is the goal of this religion?

6. Does this religion have scriptures? What do they say?

7. Design a ritual in which members participate.

8. Does your religion have a class of people authorized to teach the religion?

9. What does your religious symbol represent?
