fa como una respuesta conservadora a los acontecimientos
polticos que tuvieron lugar en Espaa. Por lo anterior, no
fue relacionada con la era de las revoluciones, que para los
historiadores slo abarc la independencia estadounidense
y la revolucin francesa. Lo ocurrido en Mxico y en toda
Hispanoamrica no sola interpretarse como una revolucin,
sino que se sostena ms bien que ah se haba tratado ni-
camente de la liberacin de la dominacin espaola, sin que
hubiera implicaciones polticas y sociales profundas.2 En el

Plan de Iguala. O'Donoj acept este tratado, denominado
de Crdoba, en la creencia de que de esta manera aseguraba

revolucin mexicana Huerta, Venustiano da cuenta
Carranza, en su carcter de primer jefe del ejrcito cons-
titucionalista encargado del poder Ejecutivo, decret el
cese de la totalidad de los integrantes del servicio exterior
mexicano. Ello por considerar que el hecho de que hubie-
ran estado al servicio de Huerta los descalificaba para ser
funcionarios del nuevo gobierno. La bibliografa tambin
registra, de manera un tanto anecdtica, las peripecias que
enfrentaron los agentes confidenciales que nombr Carran-
za para hacerse del control de ciertos consulados y legacio-
nes, as como la situacin crtica en la que quedaron algunos
antiguos diplomticos.
Ahora bien, no existe un trabajo que ofrezca una visin
de conjunto de lo que sucedi con ese contingente de fun-
cionarios pblicos a partir de agosto de 1914 y del proceso

L. Herrera, se corre seel aborda

retrato a su medida. Son tantas las facetas de su vida cien-
tfica y tal la trascendencia de su obra y de su pensamien-
to, que resulta casi imposible resumirlos en unas cuantas
pginas. Por lo tanto, aqu slo tratar algunos aspectos
relevantes que bien vale la pena reconsiderar a la luz de los
acontecimientos actuales.
Han pasado ms de 60 aos desde su muerte, acaecida el
17 de septiembre de 1942, y hace slo 45 aos que se comen-
z a hablar de l con motivo del auge de los estudios cientfi-
cos sobre el origen de la vida, de los cuales fue un destacado
precursor con la creacin de la plasmogenia. Antes de esos
aos, don Alfonso fue ignorado por completo, de hecho fue
borrado de la historia de la ciencia mexicana, ni siquiera por
casualidad se mencionaba su nombre. Poco despus de su
muerte se le rindi un homenaje que muy pronto qued en

posicin dejara puede ser discutida, pese a que el autor no inten-

mercado interno. La presin fiscal es ms que determinar un
aumento en la recaudacin fiscal y un mayor gasto en la defen-
sa. En especial porque hoy nos parece que el rgimen de precios
imperante de los espaoles estimulaba la demanda, lo que a su
vez favoreca la recaudacin fiscal a travs de las llamadas alca-
balas de consumo.
El texto destaca la relevancia de aprovechar las fuentes cuan-
titativas contenidas en los libros de contabilidad de la Real
Hacienda. Entrega abiertamente un mtodo de trabajo sobre
cmo utilizar la contabilidad fiscal, las precauciones que se deben
tener con las cartas cuentas y la utilidad de los pliegos o infor-
mes fiscales anuales; cmo mirar por localidades o por regio-
nes econmicas los gastos del imperio, y de esa manera deducir
el funcionamiento de un macro espacio de manera conjunta. Un
ingreso en determinada caja significaba una remisin, una sali-
da o un gasto para otra. La idea primigenia de hacer distributivo
o compensatorio, si se quiere, un sistema fiscal imperial.
La obra cuenta con dos prlogos que motivan la lectura, uno

Este libro abona el terreno frtil que ha desbrozado, desde
hace algunos aos, una historiografa renovada sobre la Iglesia

Otro de los aspectos fundamentales del libro se encuentra en
su postura terica. La autora procura alejarse de aquellas versio-
nes heredadas por Foucault que muestran los manicomios como
tecnologas panpticas basadas en el control, vigilancia y exclu-
sin de las disidencias. En La Castaeda se describe al manico-
mio como un lugar de movilidad social y circulacin de ideas, a
los alienistas con poco control e interesados por los relatos de sus
pacientes. Algunos mdicos se mostraron particularmente atentos
en las historias sexuales de las mujeres, en sus incontables fugas
del hogar o en los amoros al margen del matrimonio, incrimi-
nando su desenfreno carnal o estigmatizndolas como presuntas
"locas". De la penetracin de la cultura psiquitrica al discurso
pblico deriv la definicin pretendidamente cientfica de con-
ductas irracionales, anormales y desviadas. El discurso psiquitri-
co, las opiniones de las familias y la sociedad en general ayudaron
a la deteccin y separacin de los locos potenciales, definiendo as
"la funcin social de la psiquiatra". La fuerza de la sociedad termi-
n por colisionar el muro frreo de la ciencia positiva, culturizan-
do la imagen de la locura. Rivera- Garza no desmiente la prctica
mdica, busca evidenciar procesos contradictorios alrededor de
un mismo tema. No enjuicia, contextualiza una profesin com-
parndola con las visiones culturales de la enfermedad mental. Si
bien durante los primeros aos La Castaeda logr erigirse como
un espacio legtimo para el combate a las enfermedades menta-
les, entre 1920 y 1930, la psiquiatra mexicana buscaba restituir su
mala imagen pblica a travs de un complicado proceso de profe-

En su intento por clasificar cientficamente el comportamiento
sexual de las mujeres, los mdicos mexicanos no slo colaboraban
en la deteccin de "anormalidades morales", tambin hacan del
cuerpo y subjetividad femenina, un peligro social para las bue-
nas costumbres. Dice la autora que la llamada "locura moral"
sirvi como diagnstico clnico en un doble sentido: uno neta-
mente cientfico, que convirti el cuerpo de las mujeres en objeto
de conocimiento y produccin de saber; otro que hizo del sen-
timiento femenino un fenmeno que despert indignacin para
un sector conservador de la sociedad. A la pregunta de quines
fueron diagnosticadas con "locura moral" y por qu, la autora
muestra con "ejemplos representativos" que eran mujeres sexual-
mente abiertas a todo tipo de cortejos, en exceso sentimentales,
vagabundas, borrachas, sobre todo pobres y transgresora s de la
ley; adlteras, obscenas, lesbianas o con actividades intelectua-
les intensas (poetas, escritoras, activistas). Estos casos se vuel-
ven representativos de una realidad interna en la medida en que la
autora procur contextualizar sus vidas, lazos familiares, deseos,
anhelos y frustraciones. No deberan considerarse fragmentos
oscilatorios del sufrimiento psquico, sino voces articuladas por
un entorno incierto (Revolucin) en un espacio poco profesiona-
lizado en sus menesteres cientficos (psiquiatra). Para la autora,
estas "locas" fueron mujeres atpicas, antiheronas e insurrectas
de un proceso inconcluso; ellas expresaban "la destruccin" de
la modernidad porque encarnaban el "rostro inverso de la Revo-
lucin", tema del sexto y ltimo captulo. Un punto a debatir en

La exposicin de la vida cotidiana en el Mxico contempor-
neo se plantea, no obstante, desde una metodologa y un uso de
las fuentes sensiblemente diferente de los utilizados en los dos
primeros captulos de este libro colectivo. La descripcin de la
vida cotidiana en el siglo xix, sin dejar de ser atractiva para el lec-
tor, es planteada con un enfoque que incide ms sobre la rutina
que sobre el cambio y el desorden, aunque la autora recuerde que
"la enorme brecha entre lo dictado y lo cumplido habla de lo que
la sociedad perciba como un problema. Repetir las prohibiciones
sugiere que no desapareca su causa" (p. 152) o que los intentos
normativos de los ayuntamientos no siempre lograban su obje-
tivo, "indicio de que la gente encontraba vlvulas de escape a sus
frustaciones o ira" (p. 161). En definitiva, para Staples los ritmos
de la vida cotidiana se mantuvieron, y si hubo cambios stos se
produjeron durante el porfiriato y en mbitos urbanos.
La vida cotidiana en el Mxico revolucionario (1910-1940) es,
en esencia, la historia de "muchos Mxicos". Es entre este cap-
tulo y el anterior donde el lector puede hallar ms intersecciones
o repeticiones al tratar ambos, aunque con extensin e intensi-
dad distinta, los treinta aos de la "paz porfiriana". Sorprende la
denominacin de los epgrafes. Los aos de la Revolucin estn
explicados bajo el apelativo de "La tempestad", y en este captu-
lo Engracia Loyo describe los aterradores actos y conflictos que
vivieron y sufrieron los mexicanos. La excepcionalidad cotidia-
na o "vivir a salto de mata": "El sobresalto, el miedo, la impro-
visacin, las penurias se volvieron cotidianos. Actos rutinarios
como traer agua del pozo o hacer viajes para comprar produtos de
primera necesidad, maz, jabn, manteca, se volvieron una aven-
tura" (p. 186). Es otra historia de la Revolucin y de sus parado-
jas. Y despus vino "la calma", con su revolucin pacfica (con la
introduccin de la radio) y el imparable proceso de civilizacin
(o de las buenas maneras) que tuvo que padecer o experimentar la
