County Honors Clearwater Audubon’s Ken Rowe

For Outstanding Volunteer Contributions
Longtime Clearwater Audubon member, Ken Rowe, who currently serves on the Society’s Board of Directors, has received two
awards from Pinellas County for his contributions as a volunteer. This past spring Ken was awarded the Division Director’s Conser-
vation Award as well as the Partners in Public Service Award. (He was also nominated for the United Way of Tampa Bay Volunteer
of the Year.) Ken currently volunteers at the Brooker Creek Preserve, where he assists in compiling a bird census which will form
the basis of a database of bird information.

Ken has served Pinellas County as a volunteer for over ten years in many capacities. He helped to clean up the Brooker Creek
Preserve when it was still being used as a garbage dump. “We hauled out appliances, cars and over 300 tires that were a breeding
ground for mosquitoes,” says Ken. He was also a leader in the Saturday Hike program at Brooker Creek, in the days before the
education center was built and the preserve had only one employee. He is proud that this program, run totally by volunteers, was
so popular. Ken says hikers loved the birds, turtles, snakes, butterflies, and wildflowers, especially the orchids. “People were devas-
tated when they found out we were going to be walking through the water…but by the time we finished, they were ecstatic because
they had enjoyed it so much.”

Congratulations to Ken on these well-deserved honors.
