0 Objectives
To determine the mass moment of inertia of the flywheel
assuming the bearing was frictionless

2.0 Introduction
Using the apparatus shown in figure 1, basic experiments on
uniformly accelerated angular motion was performed. A
flywheel mounted in ball bearings was placed in motion by a
weight attached to a pulley. The inertia of the flywheel can
be determined from the fall time of the weight

Measurements unit
m = mass in kg
I = mass moment of inertia in kg-m2
= angular velocity in rad/sec
t = time in sec
h = linear distance in m
T = torque in N-m
Energy equation
mgh = [(mv2)/2]+[(I2)/2]
[(I2)/2] = [mgh] - [(mv2)/2]
Since we know v =r*
[(I2)/2] = [mgh] - [(mr22)/2]
I = [(2mgh)/2]-[mr2] ----- we take this as
equation 1

Given the value of equals to :

=0 + t
0 = 0 (at the beginning of the experiment)
= t
= /t
s = h = at2

a = 2h/t2
a = r*
r* = 2h/t2
r*(/t) = 2h/t2
= (2h)/(r*t)

Substitute in equation 1 earlier we get

I = mr2 ([(gt2)/(2h)]-1}
5.0 Procedure
1. The ring and the small disk we attached to the
flywheel
2. The circumference of the torque pulley was measured
3. A cord was wounded around the torque pulley
4. The length of the cord was measured and recorded
5. A load hanger of known weight was hanged at the free
end of the cord
6. A load of 3N was placed on the load hanger and held in
position
7. The stopwatch was reset to zero
8. The load was released while simultaneously pressing
the stopwatch button
9. The time taken for the load to travel till the end of the
cord was recorded
10. Step 6 to 9 was recorded with different load
11. The measurement was recorded in table 1
