The Discovery of Antibiotics

Antibiotics are a kind of effective medicine. Read the article about the discovery of antibiotics below and answer
the questions that follow.

In 1928, Fleming, a British scientist, saw some mould

on a dish of bacteria. Mould was not unusual, but what
interested him was that there was no bacterial growth
around it! He proposed that the mould produced a
chemical which could kill the bacteria.

the mould

Fleming grew the mould with different bacteria. Many bacteria

did not grow. He repeated the experiment with some other types
of mould but no similar result was found. He therefore concluded
that the mould could produce a bacteria-killing chemical. This
chemical was later found as a kind of antibiotics.

1 How did Fleming carry out his scientific investigation? Briefly describe what he did in the following steps.

a Making observation (2 marks)

b Asking questions (2 marks)

c Making hypothesis (2 marks)

d Doing experiment (2 marks)

e Drawing conclusion (2 marks)

2 Many people like to colour or perm their hairs. Will these treatments
