Treatment

Production: Throughout the course of this project, we

will be completing a short film that is the duration of 5
minutes. Our film will be released on July 1st, as this is the most appropriate date
to reach our target audience. As our target audience is for both genders aged 15-
30, teenagers would have finished/be finishing school and older people in our
target audience will have more free time to watch the film. To market our film,
we will use social networking on the Internet, as it is a commonly used thing by
our target audience. As our target audience spend a large amount of time on
social media, this will increase the chance of them seeing adverts for our film.
Promoting our film on a range on websites such as Twitter, Facebook and
Instagram. Using a range of different social media to promote our film will
ensure that all ages in our target audience are likely to see the promotion of our
film.

Genre: The genre of our film is a drama with elements of reality. We chose the
genre for our film, as we believe it suited our storyline best. This genre is also
popular within our target audience, meaning that they will be more likely to
watch our film. Our film is quite dramatic at some points, for example, during the
train station scene when the character Amirah is going to take her own life. The
drama element is incorporated through both characters emotions and the events
that take place. Another example of this would be Amirahs emotions throughout
the film. The reality element is incorporated throughout the whole film as our
storyline is based on events that take place in real life. This makes our target
audience more likely to watch our film, as they could be able to relate. If our
target audience cant relate, they will still be educated and intrigued whilst
watching our film.

Target Audience: Our film is targeted at both genders between the ages of 15 to
30. We chose to target both genders as the subject of our film, domestic abuse,
can affect both males and female. Domestic abuse is seen as an issue that only
affects females, however this isnt true. Targeting both genders will address
them on this fact. We chose to target people aged 15 to 30. We started from age
15, as the content is too sensitive for people younger than 15. We went up to age
30, as we believe that an audience older than this age wont be able to relate to
the love story that is incorporated. Despite the fact that they could relate to the
domestic abuse element, the teen love story might not attract them. To ensure
that our film is suitable for our target audience, we did some genre research so
we aware on what codes and conventions to include.

Duration: Our production is the duration of 5 minutes. Due to the fact that it is a
short film, we had to have an interesting opening in order to captivate our
audience. We had to get straight into our storyline, as we did not have much time
for our production. We incorporated Barthes enigma codes into our storyline to
ensure our audience was intrigued throughout the course of our film.

Context: We decided to promote our film through social media. For example,
YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. These social media sites are popular within our
target audience (15-30), making them more likely to see it. For example,
advertising it on YouTube before somebody is able to watch their video. We will
ensure that our short film is captivating and intriguing so that our target
audience watch the whole way through.

Outline: Our film follows a non-linear narrative and incorporates elements of

Barthes enigma codes. Our film begins with the protagonist, Amirah, standing by
the edge of the platform in a train station. She is edging closer to the edge whilst
having a look of distraught upon her face. She is constantly looking around her to
make sure nobody is near her. The scene then rewinds to her life a week ago.
Amirah is in the park when a boy, Jesse, approaches her after his basketball went
her way. They begin talking and end up exchanging each others numbers.
Amirah invites him over to her house and they relax while they get to know each
other. Jesse goes home and the two being texting. Amirah invites Jesse over for
dinner the next night. Jesse comes over and the pair are having fun and are
eating. However, Amirah is on her phone, which in turn makes Jesse angry. He
gets up to leave and Amirah tries to pull him back. He throws her arm off and
leaves leaving Amirah in shock. Jesse comes back the next day with flowers to
apologise. When Amirah is putting the flowers in water, her phone rings a boy
is calling. Jesse answers her phone in rage. Amirah runs in to see what is
happening and to stop him. Hes angry and hits her. He then begins to strangle
her and she begins losing consciousness. The scene then cuts back to her at the
train station.

Character Breakdown:

Amirah Khan: A female, age 17 years old, of a British Pakistani ethnicity. She is
the protagonist in the film. Emily is one of the only two characters in our film and
experiences domestic abuse from Jesse the boy she met in the park. Emily
contemplates suicide because of the experience she goes through.

Jesse Fraser: A male, age 17 years old, of a British African ethnicity. He is the
antagonist in the film. Jesse is the character that domestically abuses Amirah and
drives her to contemplating suicide.

Visual Elements:

Camerawork: Throughout the production of our film, we will use a wide range of
shots to keep our audience captivated and to ensure that they are completely
aware of whats happening at all times during the film. In the beginning and
ending scenes of our film, we will use a lot of close-up and extreme close-up
shots, as these are the scenes when Amirah is contemplating suicide. Close-up
shots will help to show the audience how Amirah is feeling. Itll also help the
audience to sympathise and develop an attachment to the character. Through the
middle of the film, we will use shots such as two shots, wide shots and long shots
to help the audience see what is going on. We will use a range of high and low
angles to show different characters positions.

Lighting: In the opening and ending scenes of our film, we will use low-key
lighting to represent Amirahs emotions and the state she is in. this will create a
contrast to the high-key lighting hat is used throughout the rest of the film. When
the lighting is high key, its representative of the happiness that both characters
are feeling at the time. The High-key lighting creates a light, joyful atmosphere,
which later contrasts with the sad atmosphere thats created with low-key
lighting.

Editing: When it comes to editing our film, we will use the software final cut pro.
We will add effects such as a rewind effect to make our film more enticing.

Setting: The first setting of our film is a train station. We chose this setting, as our
protagonist will plan to take her life by stepping in front of a train. The second
scene is a park, where the protagonist and antagonist meet. The fact that its set
in a park creates a sense of realism as a park is a typical place for teenagers to be.
The third scene is the protagonists house. This also creates a sense of realism, as
its also a typical place for teenagers to be.

Actor/actress: Sacid Ahmed will play the role of Jesse Fraser as he fits the
physical persona of the character that being the fact that he is tall and has a
strong body type. Tahmena Joyan will be playing the role of Amirah Khan as she
has pat experience in acting. She has a petite body type which helps to portray
her as vulnerable.

Audio elements:

Dialogue: Due to the fact that our production mainly consists of flashbacks, we
cut out diegetic dialogue within the production and replaced it with a non-
diegetic voiceover. Tahmena Joyan will be doing the voiceover as the character
Amirah Khan. A voiceover will help the audience to be aware of what is going on
at all times and is appropriate as it makes Amirahs story more personal.

Music: Throughout our whole production, there will be slow paced non-diegetic
score music the voice over will be played over this. The score music will help to
create and atmosphere within the audience.

Effects: We will have very few sound effects within our production. One of the
sound effects we will have is a doorbell to signify hat Jesse is at the door. We will
also have the sound effects of a train on a track during the scenes where Amirah
is going to take her own life. This helps the audience realise where Amirah is and
what her intentions are.

Institutions: Our production company is called TLH

Productions. TLH stand for each of the production group
members initials (Tanika, Luwang and Hassan). We believe
that this made our company name more personal. Our company
logo has our name in bold to get straight to the point and to
stand out. We have a picture of an eagle combined with film to firstly represent
Tanika Singh

the fact that were a film company. The eagle represents us as being a powerful
company that can have an impact. We will distribute our film on YouTube, as its
an extremely popular institution within our audience. We also have a low budget,
meaning that we do not have the opportunity to release it in cinemas. Our socio
economic groups are C1, C2, D and E, meaning that our target audience would all
have different schedules e.g. work and school. Releasing our film on YouTube
means that it will be available to our target audience at all times.

Representations: Throughout our production, we decide to conform to some

stereotypical representations to help captivate our audience. One way in which
we did this was through the representation of males and females. In our
production, the male character Jesse is stereotypically represented as strong and
confident compared to Amirah, who is represented as vulnerable and insecure.
The stereotypical representation helps to foreshadow what might later happen
in the film.
