WCAL to observe
50th anniversary
By John Horgan
DAILY JOURNAL CORRESPONDENT

The West Catholic Athletic League is turn-

ing 50 during the 2017-18 school year. The
celebration has begun.
According to the leagues commissioner,
Jolene Fugate, 50th anniversary logos are
making their debut as the 2017 WCAL foot-
ball season commences. Appropriate ban-
ners are also in the works, she said.
The WCAL website, www.wcalsports.org,
will begin to focus on the accomplishments
of its various sports, for both boys and
girls, beginning in early November, she
said.
We will be highlighting people in the
fall, winter and spring, Fugate explained.
Additionally, she noted, the league will
spend the next year working on a WCAL
Hall of Fame to honor its athletes.
Will there be a big, one-time event to
observe the leagues first half-century? No.
The schools already have their own big
events that focus on more than just sports,
she said.
