THE UNIVERSITY OF COLOGNE EDITORIAL
Founded in 1388, the University of Cologne is the second oldest German uni-
versity. Our heritage goes hand in hand with a thoroughly modern outlook
and a compelling and ambitious agenda in higher education.

The University of Cologne currently has about 50,000 students enrolled in


the 260+ Bachelor and Master Programmes of our six faculties: Faculty of
Management, Economics and Social Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Me-
dicine, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural
Sciences, Faculty of Human Sciences.

We combine the best of our over 600-year long tradition with twenty-
first-century teaching and research. Our students benefit from our diverse
and inspiring research culture, providing them with the opportunity to learn
from leaders in their fields. We are committed to delivering high-quality,
innovative teaching and to preparing our students for academic as well as
professional careers.

We offer 128 undergraduate programs and 138 postgraduate programs in


our six faculties. Currently we have about 50,000 students enrolled, among
them about 5,000 international students from 129 countries. An additional
1,000 students come to Cologne as exchange students every year.

UoC RESEARCH PROFILE IN A NUTSHELL
The University of Cologne is one of the largest universities in Germany, offering a
broad selection of study programmes. Priding itself on being a dedicated research

hub, the UoC and most of its programmes focus on fundamental research. The
university is a founding member of German U15, an association of universities
with a particularly high research output. In 2012 UoC was among the 11 univer-

sities distinguished by the German Excellence Initiative.
In the Faculty of Medicine, clinical studies are transferring new ideas from bench 10%
to bedside, and in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, cross-cutting

fundamental research is a priority. Close collaborations between both faculties,
for example within the highly visible field of Aging Research, with the surroun-
ding Max Planck Institutes and with the Forschungszentrum Jlich complement students 7%

Didactics and education studies as well as psychology, rehabilitation sciences
and gerontology are the strongholds of the Faculty of Human Sciences. These
research areas offer numerous starting points for cooperation with other facul-

Sciences and the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences.
The Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences and the Faculty of

Faculty of Medicine
Within the broad field of the Arts and Humanities there are distinguished re-
search areas on the ancient world, medieval studies, literature, non-European Faculty of Arts and Humanities
cultures especially regarding the African continent and contrastive linguistics.
The UoC does not offer applied science study programmes such as engineering or Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences
architecture, but it envisions a closer collaboration with surrounding universities

UNIVERSITY
There are roughly 50000 students currently enrolled at the University
of Cologne, more than half of which are female. According to statistics,
over 1400 of the 8700 freshmen registered during the Fall Semester of
2014/2015 hold a foreign passport, in the Faculty of Medicine, more than

The International Office offers guidance and counselling for international
students, both for those gaining a degree at the University of Cologne
and for short-term students on a visiting stay in Cologne. We consult
regarding the process of application and enrolment and offer support in
different questions such as visa, residence permit, work permit, health
insurance, scholarships etc. In order to help the international students in-
tegrate at our university, our office organises information and orientation
sessions, intercultural trainings and workshops. Additionally international
students can participate in extracurricular activities like field trips, guided
city and museum tours, events of the International Students Association
Cologne ISAC and regulars tables (Stammtische).

EUROPEAN LEGAL LINGUISTICS (M.A.) Application Deadline

students with the opportunity to develop a high level of communicative
proficiency necessary for professionals who regularly deal with legal texts

allows for direct comparisons to be drawn between the legal intricacies of
the European Union and the dynamic complexities of the multiple languages
used in the daily administration of the European Union. Alongside receiving
