Crown Superette in Mt Roskill robbed again

rown Superette on
Melrose Road, Mt
Roskill, was back in
news again and not for right
reasons though.
The store had gained
lot of public and media
attention earlier this year
in March, when a group of
seven teenagers barged in
and brutally assaulted the
husband-wife owner duo
Jitesh and Preeti Arora,
leaving them badly injured
and spurring lot of emotions
in the community and beyond.
Mr Arora had to undergo a
few surgeries, was eventually
unable to revive the sinking
business, and had to sell to
the current owners of the
business.
Sadly, the new owner and
management have met a
similar fate of armed robbery,
though, luckily in this case,
without much bloodshed.
The superette was robbed
again for the second time
in the last six months on
Monday, September 18.
At about 8:30 p.m. four
men armed with machetes,
gun and a saw entered the
dairy store and demanded
cash and tobacco.
The offenders quickly
took cash from the till and
cigarettes from the rack
and escaped.
The offenders threatened to
shoot the attendant, but no one
was injured.

workplace, a dairy store in
Mangere, South Auckland.
On Monday, September 18,
Sharry was the sole staffer at

Melrose Road in Mt Roskill
and was robbed at gunpoint
by four robbers.
The offenders who tried
to get in through backdoor
approached from the side
alley and ambushed through
the front door and placed
a gun on to Sharrys head
while he was sitting behind
the counter.

screwdriver and a big knife

cutting saw; fortunately, I was
a little away from being hurt.
Earlier in April, I had
experienced assault and
robbery for the first time
at Gatsby Superette in
Mangere, Sharry said.

her left side got paralysed as a result,

time nursing care which is not covered
by her insurance, says the Give-a-

Ms Goel is a friend of Tanmeet Kaur,
who is struggling emotionally and
financially in meeting the exorbitant
cost of medical expenses and
health care.
The Indian Weekender spoke with
Ms Kaur, who said her family had
already spent around $12-13,000
and had exhausted all their financial
resources.
As her current insurance provider
is not covering any expenses, so we
are clueless what to do next.
Now we are trying to take her back
to India where we have our extended
family, and her insurance provider
would also be able to bear the cost
of treatment.
But we have been advised by
doctors that the cost of taking her back
to India safely, would be in the range
of $25 to 30,000, said a distraught
Ms Kaur.
We have also approached the

Zealand and Ministry of External
Affairs back in New Delhi to see if
something can be done to help us, Ms
Kaur said.

Immigration NZ mulls shutting Ashwini spellbinds discerning

to bring many of its offshore visa processing
offices back to New Zealand.
According to a report published in the New
Zealand Herald on Monday, September 18,
Immigration New Zealand is planning to shut
down offices at Ho Chi Minh City, Hong
Kong, Jakarta, Bangkok, New Delhi, Pretoria,
Moscow and Shanghai.
Processing will also cease in four other
offices Manila, Washington DC, London
and Dubai.
According to the Herald report just two
overseas offices, Mumbai and Beijing, will
be kept open and retain their visa-processing
capacity.
Currently, according to Immigration New
Zealands (INZ) website, the visa application
offices outside New Zealand are spread across
27 countries.
The report in the Herald claims that this
decision has come down after the paper
reported last month that the agency was paying
its overseas officers as little as $4 an hour and
much of the visa processing was being done in
countries such as Thailand and India.

The robbery at the liquor store
occurred at 9:31 p.m., within an hour
of the Crown Superette robbery in
Mt Roskill.

e live in a wonderful country and

e have come to the pointy end
of this election. It seems like we
have been on a roller coaster ride
these past six weeks. We have lost three party
leaders, policies have changed on the fly and
even now we have an MP who used to work
with Chinese spies.
While this is all very exciting and entertaining
it does nothing to help improve the lives of
New Zealanders. While all these other dramas
have been the main focus of media attention,
the details of various policies have seen little
attention. This is to the detriment of voters
whom are trying to make informed choices.
We have been very clear in our policies and
our priorities going into this election. We
specifically chose three specific issues you had
told us were important to you.
Our immigration policy will ensure families
can be reunited in New Zealand and put down
strong familial roots that grow communities
and make the economy more prosperous.
I have also made it a priority to do the right
thing by all the international students currently
in New Zealand. These students have put
themselves into financial hardship to study
in New Zealand with promises of permanent
residence. We should all be ashamed at the
way our government has treated these students.
They are people, not cash cows.
Law and order is important to all of us, I am
sick of waking up and reading of yet another
robbery, assault, or home invasion in New

The other key issue for us has been housing.
The rapidly rising house prices have essentially
locked an entire generation out of owning a

are proposing to give Auckland first home
buyers a five year interest free loan on up to
$100,000 to go toward their deposit. This will
mean home ownership isnt limited to just those
with wealthy parents. Outside of Auckland we
are proposing a more modest $60,000.
We are a small party and we are new to
politics. Our policies I have outlined above are
just a taste of what we plan to do in the future.
We are always on the look out for passionate
people to get involved with the party. The polls
are open, you can go into a polling location any
day between now and September 23rd. You
dont need a special reason to vote in advance.

How important is voting for the Kiwi-
Indian community?

he Kiwi-Indian
community could be
a significant departure
and a welcome oasis within an
otherwise barren landscape of
migrant non-voting in this
country.
Voting and participating
in the electoral process is
not considered as one of the
best value that ethnic Asian
migrant communities bring to
New Zealand.
Often migrant non-voting
and lack of participation in the
electoral process is considered
as a major disservice to the
nation, to an extent argued as
adversely impacting on social
cohesion and New Zealands
democratic legitimacy.
A major study of New
Zealands electoral laws
released in 2015, titled
Superdiversity, Democracy
and Electoral Laws,
conducted by public law
specialist and Chair of the
Superdiversity Centre for
Law, Policy and Business Mai

members in the community
who have emigrated directly
from India bring along with
them an intense experience of
participation in the electoral
process.
Experts largely agree on the
fact that Indian democracy
and electoral process, despite
many challenges is able to
leave an intense and often
exhilarating experience on
everyone in the country,

convenience of voting offered
to any prospective voters
offered in this country is also
a major pull for many with

in the political process to have
their say counted.
For many, the opportunity
of advance voting available
for two weeks before Election
Day, along with the ease of
the voting process is an added
incentive in driving them
toward exercising their civic
responsibility of voting.

Body of Indian
woman to be flown
home this week

he body of an Indian woman
who was found dead in
Christchurch on Monday,
September 11, is likely to be flown
home later this week so the family
can administer final rites. Police
have released the body to her
immediate family.
The woman, 28-year-old Tina
Sharma, who came to Christchurch
on a tourist visa just two-and-a-half
months back. Her husband Narinder
Singh is a permanent resident here.
They recently got married and lived
on Selwyn Street near Hagley Park
in Christchurch. Tinas brother,
Deepak Sharma, also lives in
Christchurch and the family hails from
Ludhiana, Punjab.
Sources have confirmed that while
a post-mortem examination has been
carried out, the cause of death is still
undetermined at this stage, and the
police is still awaiting other medical

committed to assist Fijis
MSME sector with US$5 million
(FJ$10.10m) pledged by the Indian
Prime Minister, Narendra Modi
during his state visit to Fiji in
November 2014.
In honouring its commitment
towards developing Fijis MSME
sector, the Government of India
and the Fijian Government signed a
Memorandum of Agreement (MOA)
which to date facilitated the release
of FJ$4.085 million.
This support was further boosted
with an additional FJ$0.58 million
that was presented to the Minister for
Industry, Trade and Tourism, Lands
and Mineral Resources, Faiyaz Koya
by the Indian High Commissioner to
Fiji, Vishwas Sapkal
On behalf of the Fijian
Government, we thank the Indian
Government for its continued support
towards our grassroots community
and assisting in formalizing Fijis
MSME sector, Mr Koya said.
This brings the total financial
support by the Government of
India towards the development of
the Fijian MSME sector to close to

enact within six months legislation to govern Muslim marriages
and divorces.
India's justice system has numerous drawbacks. It often takes
decades for courts to deliver justice. In this instance, the Supreme
Court should be applauded for delivering a correct judgment in
a timely manner.
The ball is now in the government's court. It is up to people's
representatives to come up with policies that will change the
lives of Muslim women for the better.
Equitable legislation on Muslim marriages and divorces
should be just the starting point.
The central and state governments must craft policies that
empower women belonging to all castes, creeds and religions.
Such policies should focus on educating women, developing
their skills and making them part of the work force. Empowerment

growth post demonetisation, troubled transition of the Goods
and Services Tax (GST) regime and tepid private investment.
Pulled down by sluggish manufacturing, growth in the Indian
economy in the first quarter of this fiscal fell to 5.7 per cent,
clocking the lowest GDP growth rate since Modi took power
in May 2014. The meeting is also expected to discuss the
inflationary pressures and reasons for the low manufacturing

he Indian government is seeking a
dramatic increase in tourist figures,
both foreign and domestic, in a way
that it helps to earn more revenues and generate
employment, new Tourism Minister K.J.
Alphons has said.
"The number of foreign tourist arrivals
was 8.8 million in 2016. We want to increase
it dramatically. We also want to increase
the number of domestic tourists, which was

around 150 million. The whole idea is that
we want to generate revenues and be a huge
contributor to the economy," Alphons, a former
bureaucrat, said
According to the Tourism Ministry, in 2016
the foreign exchange earned through tourism
was Rs 154,146 crore and the sector provides
direct and indirect employment to over 40
million people. It is a major contributor to the
nation's GDP.
Speaking at his office in Transport Bhavan,
Alphons said: "We don't want people to just
come, see and go. We want them to stay,
experience India, shop and spend money."
"We have a 5,000-year-old civilisation, one
of the oldest in the world. What is exceptional
in India is that, along with the civilisation, we
also have a philosophy. It is not only brick and
mortar. It is much, much beyond it. The kind
of spiritual and philosophical depth that Indian
civilisation has, is unique."
Asked about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's
expectations from this ministry, Alphons said
marketing India well to the world outside is
very crucial.
"The entire thing is about marketing India,
as we are an amazing, incredible and beautiful
country. We just need to tell the world that we
are a fantastic destination to visit. We want the
whole world to come to India. They should
come and feel the country and when they leave,
they should say, 'This was fantastic!'"

eating too many almonds

e all think that almonds are our
best friends. Munching on them
is considered as an ideal binge
behaviour as they are loaded with vitamin A.
Sure they are but what if you are overdoing the
snacking? Is there any harmful impact of eating
almonds more than you should? Yes, there are
five. Here we list them.
DIGESTIVE PROBLEM: If you are
consuming a lot of almonds, it can cause
constipation, bloating and upset your stomach.
This is because there is a lot of fiber in almonds
and your body is not used to consuming so
much of it. If your fiber intake is increased, you
can also increase your water intake to tackle the
situation. However, best is to avoid an almond
overdose.
VITAMIN E OVERDOSE: 100 grams (half
a cup) of almonds contain 25 mg of vitamin E.
Your daily requirement of the vitamin is 15 mg.
Now, imagine the amount you are consuming if
you have, lets say, a cupful of almonds. More
than three times your daily need! This may be
fine and may not show any side effects if it is
not supplemented with other sources of the
vitamin, such as eggs, wholegrains and spinach.
However, if it is, you may develop diarrhoea,
weakness and a blurred vision.
WEIGHT GAIN: Almonds are high in
fat content and calories. About 100 grams of
almonds will provide you 50 grams of fat but a
sizable portion of this is of monosaturated fats,
which are healthy for heart. But if your lifestyle
is sedentary and you dont move much to burn
the calories that you gain through almonds, it
can lead to fat deposition in your body.

among adolescents is yes," said

at the University of Waterloo in
Ontario, Canada.
E-cigarettes can contain nicotine but not
many of the harmful substances produced
by smoking tobacco such as tar or carbon
monoxide. These products work through an
inhalation-activated system that heats a solution
to create an inhalable aerosol often known as
vapour.
"While preliminary evidence suggests that
e-cigarettes contain fewer toxic chemicals than
traditional cigarettes, our findings suggest that
a potential increase in harmful cigarette use
may follow as e-cigarette use continues to rise
among adolescent populations," Baskerville
added. The study was published in the journal
Preventive Medicine.
"This study supports the restricting of
e-cigarette access to minors, which have been
shown to have heightened risk to initiate
smoking," Baskerville said.

Barfi hit theatres but she wasnt
prepared at the time.
Ileana DCruz has been a part
of several successful movies in
Bollywood and down South but the
actor says there was a time when
she would sign a film without even
thinking properly. The 30-year-old
actor has worked in more than 15
films in her six year-long career in
the South, before making a debut in
the Hindi film industry with Barfi
in 2012.
I keep joking, I was the Akshay
Kumar of South, I used to do four
films a year. He does good films, but
some films of mine were good, some
werent. I was just signing films,
there wasnt this thing of wanting to
do good work, says Ileana.

back on ground and focus on
taking her career forward. I told
myself, this is never really going to
last for a long time, about time I start
doing good work.
"Then I put my head into it
completely... I had no idea about
the South film industry and how it

there, I thought how would I do it,

When I started doing it, I was like

film even if I do bad in it. It was a
