Disable MySite and MyLinks in Sharepoint (MOSS) 2007

Wednesday, November 01, 2006 1:43 PM

Okay, this one took me a while to figur e out, but nonetheless I found it and will shar e
it.

In or der to tur n off or disable the MySite or MyLinks functionality you need to be an
Shar epoint administr ator .

Go to the Centr al Administr ation Web Page

Click on the link for Shar ed Ser vices Administr ation
--If you have mor e than one SSP, select the one that is r unning the MySites
functionality
Under "User Pr ofiles and My Sites" click Per sonalization Ser vices Per missions

Select the gr oup you want to limit the functionality for . Mor e than likely you will just
have NTAuthor ity\Authenticated User s.

In the next scr een you will see a list of checkboxes,

--To disable MySites uncheck "Cr eate Per sonal Site"
--To disable MyLinks uncheck "Use Per sonal Featur es"

Once you find it, disabling the functionality is pr etty easy, but if you ar e new to 2007
like I am it will take a while to find. Hopefully this will save you a few cycles.

A las, w ith more checking it looks like y ou are correct. It is inserting the link in to the M y S ite/Links
list.

H mmm. It is unfortunate that the permission screen doesn't make this dependency more clear. I
guess w ith that being the case, I am not sure y ou can use the M y Links functionality .

I guess in some w ay s it makes sense, but others it is a bummer that they are so closely linked.

If y ou are the only one that can see the links then y ou are most likely deemed an administrator
on the site from the C entral A dministration or y ou are logging in as the the serv ice user.

In order to see if the other users should hav e access to those links, go to the personalization

V eronica

# r e: Disable M ySite and M yLinks in Shar epoint ( M O SS) 2 0 0 7

V eronica,
I am not sure if there is a specific site. But I do know that ther is a C apacity P lanning w orksheet
on M S DN that might be useful. Realistically it isn't too ov erly difficult. Just take the number of
M y S ites y ou w ill need, add in some potential grow th estimate and then times that by 100M B
(the default content quota for a M y S ite). That w ill be the total space y ou w ill need, but I w ould
recommending ev en padding that just to be sure. F or instance, 100 sites + 50 sites (3 y ears
expected grow th) = 150 sites * 100M B = 15000M B * 2 (Buffer) = 30000M B. G ranted in this
situation w e are not talking about a lot of room, but if y ou get in to an enterprise implementation
w ith thousands of employ ees this can turn quickly in to a capacity problem.

The w elcome user link is actually a control that is on the master page. If y ou really need to get

GM,
I know that y ou are able to modify the maximum file size in the configuration of the w eb
application in C entral A dministration, but the maximum picture size I am not sure is possible.
S hareP oint sees ev ery thing as content so the picture w ould hav e to abide by the maximum file
size restriction but as far a phy sical size I don't think it is possible to limit.

I'v e had success by only unchecking "U se P ersonal F eatures" - I'v e left "create personal site"
checked. It got rid of both links. I'v e also had success remov ing "N T A uthority \A uthenticated
U sers" (as mentioned abov e)

I stumbled on the first solution by finding a user that thought it w as a bug:

We w ould like to enable M y S ites for a group of users, w hich w e can do by allow ing those users
to 'C reate P ersonal S ite' as described here. H ow ev er, for licensing purposes (M S S tandard C A Ls),
w e need to ensure that these users don't open up the P ublic area of their M y S ites to folks that
are not allow ed to create M y S ites. Is this possible? 10/3/2008 9:03 A M | H elen

H elen,
I am not sure I know w hat y ou mean by opening the public side of their M y S ites to the folks
that are not allow ed to create M y S ites. G enerally y ou are not licensed by the M y S ite or the
person v iew ing it. You are licensed by the users that are using/v iew ing any thing in S hareP oint.

S o ev en if y ou don't allow them to create M y S ites or v iew a M y S ite, if they hav e access to
other areas of S hareP oint then y ou w ill still hav e to purchase a license for them.

To answ er y ou question more directly , I am not positiv e that y ou w ould be able to do this.

M ichael,let me clarify :

We license our users of S hareP oint, how ev er w e can control w ho has access. If w e allow those
licensed users to create M y S ites, w e w ould w ant to prev ent those users from inv iting
non-licensed users to participate in M y S ites (the public area), as this w ould require that w e
license the inv ited participants. M y question is technical - w e can limit w ho can create M y S ites,
but can w e limit w ho can be inv ited to participate in someone else's M y S ite? 10/7/2008 12:29

By remov ing the U ser P ersonal F eatures, as A nge stated, users are not able to v iew U ser
P rofiles - this w as a problme for us. What found is that if y ou giv e M anage U ser P rofiles, then
users are able to v iew U ser profiles w ithout hav ing the M y Links hy perlink. This sounds risking
because it sounds like a user could do some damage by editing user profiles, but in fact a user

"U ser P ersonal F eatures" A N D adding "M anage U ser P rofiles" w as the fix for us. 10/10/2008

To those try ing to get rid of the A dd to my Links list on the document edit menus. The only w ay
I hav e been able to do so is by editing the core.js in the 12 hiv e/template/lay outs/1033 folder.

In the JS y ou can see M S failed to w rap the code that inserts this in any ty pe of if statement tied
to permissions so it display s for ev ery one.

I just comment out the lines. O pen the js file (back it up first) and do a search on "A dd to M y
Links". This edit needs to be made on ev ery single WF E . A lso, because y ou are modify ing a
M O S S core file, y ou cannot be guaranteed that the next patch w ill not ov erw rite y our change.
A lso, this is a G LO BA L change. If y ou remov e it, nobody reciev ing content from the WF E s y ou
modify w ill ev er get the link.

S o In short, it w orks, but there are gotchas and w ide repercussions. M ake sure y ou really w ant it
remov ed before y ou remov e it. 12/17/2008 6:11 A M | G ouranga

I think that if y ou disable M y S ites, then users cannot get to the page to edit their profile.

With M y S ites, there is a link from their my site to the profile edit page.

The profile edit apge actually liv es on the my site host, and doesn't require the user to hav e a
my site to use -- if they ty pe in the url manually they can get to it, eg,
my sites.w hatev er/person.aspx?account=john.doe
