Room 2107

Course Description: Algebra provides a systematic way to represent mathematical relationships and
analyze change. Students need to understand the concepts and symbols of algebra, the structures that
govern the manipulation of the symbols, and how the symbols can be used to record ideas and events.
Students will explore patterns that are linear and quadratic in the first year of algebra and should
develop the notion of families of functions. A solid conceptual foundation in algebra should be developed
before students engage extensively in symbolic manipulation.

Course Objectives:

Marking Period 1 Marking Period 2 Marking Period 3 Marking Period 4

Grading Policy:
10% Formative Assessment (Classwork, Homework, etc.) 90% Summative Assessment (Tests and Quizzes)

The Algebra I team puts a lot of effort into providing meaningful and valuable educational activities in class. It is
important for students to experience and participate in all classroom learning activities and assignments. This
means that students may not opt out of classroom assignments. This includes re-takes on previously not
mastered standards. Students are provided with the appropriate class time for each assignment. In the case
that a student does not complete a required classroom assignment or a required re-take, his/her Algebra I
teacher will be assigning a mandatory after school work session. These will be assigned on a Tuesday or
Thursday so the student will have access to the activity bus or an alternative time may be arranged with the
teacher on a case by case basis. Once assigned, these work sessions are not optional and if a student fails to
show-up, he/she will be referred for an administrative detention.

Students will be allowed to retake quizzes. Students must complete a quiz correction sheet to retake a quiz.
Retakes will be given within two weeks of the original quiz date.

The Quarter Test will occur approximately 2 weeks prior to the end of the quarter and will assess the multiple
standards addressed in the quarter. Students will be receiving grades on each standard assessed. Retakes will
take place by standard accessed, not the entire assessment. All retakes must be completed before the close of
the marking period.

Classroom Rules:
Respect the teacher and other students Keep all personal electronics put away
Be responsible for your own learning No food or drink in classroom (except water)

After School Help: Tuesdays/ Thursday 2:15-3:15 and other days upon request.

Make-up Work: If a student misses class for any reason it is vital that he/she check the school website.
All class notes with video explanations and any missed assignments will be posted. Upon return, students
should check in for any hard copies of assignments, if needed. All make up work for absent students must
be completed within the time frame set forth in the student handbook.

SOL Information: Students will be taking the Algebra 1 SOL in April/May. Students must pass a math
SOL in order to graduate. To encourage students to do well on the SOL, students can earn a final exam
exemption by passing the SOL in April/May. However, even if a student is exempt from the exam, he/she may
elect to take the final exam to improve the final grade.
