SOCIAL ACTIVISM PARTICIPATING, ORGANIZING, FACILITATING

2016 - 2017 Participated in anti-racism training and service of repentance and reconciliation
at Church of the Epiphany in Atlanta. Participated in planning the local Jan. 2017
Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Walk in northeast Georgia. More anti-racism study
and training. Designed and co-led Lenten program on white privilege, for own
church.
1980s Intense study of radical feminism (Mary Daly, Judy Chicago, Adrienne Rich,
through more.) Occasional workshops and groups in northeast Georgia. At 1983
2015 conference of artist-blacksmiths, attempted to organize a womens caucus. 1990
1992, Held womens circles at my Medicine Wheel, opened womens coffee
house and retreat center in the woods. From 1990 to 1994, forged openwork iron
bowls as ritual art for co-creating a postpatriarchal culture.
1970s In 1970, organized a womens caucus during a professional training workshop in
organization development sponsored by National Training Laboratories (NTL).

Designed and co-led three ten-day community-building camps, in Georgia, NC,


and LA, to bring rich and poor, Black and white, girls and boys together for
personal growth, fun, and participatory democracy. Camps were sponsored by
Girl Scouts USA and United Way. For the regional Girl Scouts, designed and co-
led Operation Black Camp Staff program to recruit, train, and support Black
counselors for camps across the southeast.

Designed and co-led workshops on racism, sexism, and creative conflict


resolution. Led workshops on claiming power for the YWCA and NOW. Initiated
committee on diversity at Paideia School in Atlanta, and one on white privilege at
the Atlanta Society of Friends. Elected a member of Resurgens Atlanta, a group
promoting diversity in Atlantas leadership. Graduated class of 1979, Leadership
Atlanta (which included workshop with Charles King on structural racism).
Participated in an interdenominational support group for women challenging
sexism in churches.

Organized a cooperative alternative school in Atlanta, later merged with a free-


learning school (Riverwood) in South DeKalb. Moved to an integrated
neighborhood.

Organized a program, Country Bound, to help people learn back-to-the-land


skills and live apart from mainstream consumer culture. Studied deep ecology
and Wendell Berry, Ivan Illich, Dolores LaChapelle.
1960s Jailed twice during sit-ins downtown Chicago, protesting school segregation.
Marched at Selma in 1965, joined Mississippi Meredith March in 1966, marched
with Martin Luther King Jr. on the west side of Chicago in 1967. Participated in
research to document red-lining in Chicago real estate.

Participated in May, 1966 student sit-in at University of Chicago Administration


Building, Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) asking the University not to
submit grades and class ranks to the Selective Service. Participated in American
Friends Service Committee program to bring rich and poor, Black and white five-
year-old girls together each Saturday for excursions together. Served on state
ACSW board representing other welfare recipients.

Moved from Chicago to Atlanta in 1969: joined Atlanta Lesbian-Feminist Alliance


and at NOW, initiated committee on race and feminism.

FACILITATING PERSONAL GROWTH


& CONFLICT RESOLUTION

1991-2011 In local NE GA area, provided individual creativity coaching sessions for people
interested in any creative medium: writing, dance, photography, painting, and
more. Initiated and led group for local artists, based on Peter Elbows principles
for writers groups, for three years. Offered workshops on tools for accessing
inner wisdom.
1975-1982 Organization Development Consultant for Human Development Associates,
Inc. in Atlanta. (My name was then Catherine Witham Harkins.) Designed and
led year-long training programs and internships for people wanting to learn
professional-level skills in leading groups and workshops. Trained and led a
team who in turn trained volunteer trainers for the Girl Scouts of Northwest
Georgia (including the greater Atlanta area). Completely redesigned the
volunteer training for that agency, to focus on the personal growth of the girls
and their leaders a goal of the Board of Directors. Wrote grant applications for
The Link, carried out programs for United Way of Atlanta, and worked with a
number of other clients -- some business, mainly nonprofits.
1969-1982 Freelance human relations consultant. Designed and led personal growth
groups and classes on self-esteem, vocational development, assertiveness
training, and more. Worked with nonprofit and business staff groups to facilitate
conflict resolution and team building. Developed and led Self-Esteem Training
(S.E.T.) and trained others to lead it. Served more 45 organizations in the SE.
Crisis intervention services to nonprofits.
1967-1969 Mental Health Program Worker, Reed Zone Center, Chicago, IL, State of IL
Mental Health.

PROFESSIONAL TRAINING AS A FACILITATOR AND CONSULTANT


1969 - 1972 Two-year intensive training program for graduate students, in facilitating personal
growth and organization development, from the Midwest group of National
Training Laboratories (NTL). Two ten-day workshops interspersed with weekend
workshops and internship opportunities. Third-year followup intensive for
graduates.
1967 - 1969 Six-month full-time training program in personal growth and psychotherapeutic
skills, based on process philosophy and client-centered therapy. Followed by 1.5
years supervised work in crisis intervention, couples therapy, admissions, and
innovations in in-patient treatment. Reed Zone Center, Chicago, IL.

partners work as a woodturner.
2005 - 2012 Research, analysis, writing, SEO editing, blog articles, and special projects for
ConsumerSearch.com. Revamped SEO program and secured copyright
registration for the publication. Wrote full-length reports covering over 70 product
categories. Updated and reorganized many annually, to take new developments
into account. Found data often overlooked; probed deeply to uncover insights
valuable to consumers. For example, for a report on table saws, found that the
major woodworking magazines had misinterpreted the accident data from the
Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Other publications eventually
came around to the same point of view.
1997 - 2006 Freelance research and web design for private clients.
1979 - 1983 Evaluation research and final recommendations for the Outdoor Therapeutic
Program, Cleveland, GA. Designed research, did testing and interviews, analyzed
data and wrote final report.
1969 - 2004 Varied freelance writing projects, including magazine articles. For nonprofit
organizations in Atlanta, wrote grant proposals, reports, training manuals, press
releases, and dozens of flyers and ads. For a nominee to Georgia Women of
Achievement, used fresh research, a strategic angle, and powerful writing to
transform a losing proposal into a winning one.

IRON, PAPER, & MIXED-MEDIA SCULPTURE


Studied blacksmithing with Francis Whitaker, Brent Kington and Peter Ross, became fulltime
artist-blacksmith in 1983. Iron, paper, and mixed-media vessels have been exhibited in the
Southeast, and are in private collections throughout the United States.
